[Music] [Music] my set [Music] speee [Music] it has been a long time we had need to speak with you oh uh uh what subject man technology the partnership we are interested in the current status um stronger yes I'd say it was getting stronger improving even please be more specific specific well of course um there's a lot going on let's see would you be interested in the field of hydrocarbon fuels perhaps oil naturally fossil fuels are still of great importance ah in that case allow me to show you how man and Technology especially my little Branch are working together quite well I think yes quite well uh have you brought your eyes naturally where first England a service station just outside London I am ready [Applause] [Music] what is so extraordinary about this well just that the art of selling is now a science these new style service stations are precisely designed to help both the customer and the station manager as they should be yes but we're also beginning to do away with what they call Cash electronic transactions good what else every delivery is automatically logged and checked soon we will be planning the loading of tankers delivery routes and anticipating fuel requirements as a matter of fact my involvement goes right back to the initial planning how by helping to select the optimum design for any given site the right ergonomics for humans and vehicles and by helping The Architects with a lot of tedious drawings leaving them free to make decisions more opportunity to be creative we can be creative give them the right input spare us your sensitivity explore this creative partnership further well how about um oil and gas exploration and recovery for instance the interpretation of seismic data extremely interesting stuff huh [Applause] [Music] oil ship pick up the reflected sound waves so they analyze the sound waves yes but prior to Isis that's this the explorationists had to interpret the data and draw these cross-sections on large sheets of paper then they were FedEd into computers by a long laborious technique only then could the explorationists get an enhanced picture of the strata extremely time consuming exactly now the data is fed into a device not unlike myself and a cross-section is is drawn immediately it saves days as well as giving the geophysicists more time to assess the potential of both new fines and existing Wells is that important crucially not all Wells are worth exploiting Isis helps the geologists sort out the probable successes Engineers using the computer to save time time used to think interesting there are signs of progress here oh now there's more and if you have time of course show [Music] [Applause] [Applause] us you are now on your way to a research laboratory at Abingdon near Oxford one of the most advanced and flexible internal combustion engine fuels and lubricants Test Facilities in the world we sincerely hope that somebody on this planet is working on a quieter form of power in fact these facilities are simulating highly stressed driving conditions thus helping vehicle engine manufacturers confirm the protection of their Advanced engines including quieter ones it checks the performance in all climates of fuels and lubricants in a variety of petrol and diesel engines for both passenger and large commercial vehicles to what end greater efficiency and that will save the user money and conserve precious fuel supplies let swear and tear on engines too and the technology half of the equation computers naturally get the best data the test cells need to be automated the engines have to run at very precise settings for many hours [Music] [Applause] [Music] good grief oh I I know it looks primitive to you but consider what it's beginning to do for this place this company tell me the laboratory technician has traditionally been used to repeat various analysis techniques with a high degree of accuracy taking samples measuring and portioning them heating or cooling them adding other chemicals and so on and although analysis is the important part of the process it's preparation that takes most of the technician's time enter robot and computer the computer is the brain the robot is the arm hand and fingers together they relieve lab technicians of boring repetitive work once again releasing them to work on the development of new preparation techniques actually we are forced to agree that this robot however basic is a good sign in the development of this planet good I have congratulated my team and now let me take the topic further down there down there under the sea to a project which really demonstrates how the man technology partnership is tackling extreme problems and problems of extremes such as such as developing oil fields where the outlying reserves aren't large enough to deserve a highly extensive fullscale production platform solution ingenious what do you think of this looks to us like a giant control valve it is in fact this planet's most advanced underwater oil production system known as the underwater manifold Center purpose to provide a seabed template through which several Wells can be drilled from the surface and to act as a collector point for satellite Wells also placed on the seabed all for the purpose of exploiting reservoirs which do not justify a full platform what happens to the oil and gas once it has been collected it flows to a nearby platform and the whole process is handled remotely from the surface Quite a feat and remotely controlled but where is the robot yeah I was coming to that as the UMC is expected to be in service for 25 years it will need maintenance robot maintenance when necessary this 35 ton robot mechanic is lowered down to the center it then runs along a center track changing Valves and replacing electric or hydraulic control units we are wondering why man cannot do these jobs surely he has conquered what is it called Inner Space for man diving in very deep Waters is difficult and dangerous the robot is a sensible solution we are forced to agree and to admit that the man technology partnership seems to be in reasonably good health but we have one further question it concerns this planet's environment is man as intent on protecting it as he is is exploiting it never more so most of their pipelines are now buried they are constantly researching ways to make hydrocarbon fuels less polluting but let me show you an example where yet again my little branch of technology is doing its bit let's go to the seaside it happens infrequently but if an oil tanker spills all or part of its load it is normally the responsibility of Central and local government to respond either out at sea or closer to the shore where the coastline may be threatened however we have spent time developing computer technology to head off the oil while it is still at Sea you have learned to swim not not quite actually we never get to even see the Slick instead we run a clever little program called stum this predicts where the Slick is likely to travel and how long it will take it also shows the position of the Slick at any given time which means a team can always be alerted to be in the right place at the right time excellent and now I must return my time grows short we have seen a marked improvement we are particularly impressed with this partnership it has a name ESO that is good I
