Uses dramatized experiences to show the literary life of Elizabeth's England. Accompanies several Londoners as they journey to the Globe Theatre to witness scenes from Shakespeare's Henry the Fifth. Comments on the works of such other English writers as Richard Hakluyt, Michael Drayton, Sir Thomas More, Sir Philip Sidney, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Francis Bacon. Explains the influence of the religious dramas on the Elizabethan writers and relates the writing of the period to the social, economic, and historical background of the time., Describes how trends in colonial expansion, trade, taste and study affected the literature of the Elizabethan period. Presents excerpts from the writings of that time and shows their characteristic elements.
