of personality of behavior are influenced by involved chemical processes within our bodies processes which are regulated by minute quantities of certain substances which are carried by the blood throughout the body these substances are called hormones and they are discharged directly into the bloodstream by a group of glands called ductless or endocrine glands the endocrine glands include the pituitary the thyroid the parathyroids the pineal and thymus glands the islands of langerhans the adrenals and the sex glands the testes in the male and the ovaries in the female the hormone secreted by these endocrine glands play an important role in many of the processes of daily life of all of these glands the pituitary is perhaps the most important one located in the center of the head it is about the size of a PE the pituitary is divided into two lobes the anterior and the posterior lobe the anterior lobe secretes the growth which regulates the rate and the amount of growth of the different parts of the if the pituitary does not function properly abnormalities occur too small an amount of the growth hormone may result in dwarfism too much growth hormone will produce giantism in addition to the growth hormone the anterior lobe of the pituitary also produces hormones which set off hormone produ production by some of the other endocrine glands for example the gonadotropic hormone signals the onset of puberty by stimulating the sex glands to step up their production of the sex hormones in a similar way there is another anterior lobe hormone that stimulates production of
