Examines the life and work of Edgar Degas. Considers many of the hallmarks of his works, such as realism, images of the body in action and in mid-gesture, his use of directional light, and his later use of photography and stop action film. Discusses his work in sculpture, the influence of other Impressionists and of Japanese prints, his blindness, his financial struggles, his personal life, and the public reputation he held. Argues that he was the first painter to paint nude women in natural settings, such as a bath. Note: Includes brief nudity, using live models to recreate scenes Degas painted.
