DRIVER IRRITATIONS

Description: This 1950 black and white film is one of a series of traffic safety films. It was produced for Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company by Traffic Safety Films Inc, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Police Department. The focus of this public safety video is to encourage drivers to control their tempers, use patience while driving, and be aware of dangerous driving. The film begins with an Education Unit police officer opening a binder titled "Driver Irritations" (0:07-0:29). The camera pans past a 1940s Los Angeles neighborhood with cars, including a 1950 Chevrolet Bel Air Deluxe (0:30-0:56). A man in a vintage double-breasted suit comes out of his house, puts on his 1950’s hat, picks a flower and tucks it in his lapel, and gets behind the wheel of his 1940s Chrysler New Yorker Club Coupe (0:57-1:34). A delivery man in a 1940s Plymouth PT-105 pickup truck partially blocks his driveway. He pulls around it, driving over the curb (1:35-2:17). He waits for clearance to pull out into a busy intersection but a man walks in front of him as he goes to do so, and he narrowly pulls in-between the 1940s cars and trucks going past (2:18-3:11). More 1940s cars and trucks are shown, and the man adjusts his (unseen) radio and checks his watch (3:12-3:45). He gets stuck behind a pickup truck blocking the road, and honks his horn. The driver of the truck waves him to go around. He tries to change lines, and finally another driver lets him in (3:46-4:47). Another car is blocking the road while dropping off a woman (4:48-5:17). A car pulls out in front of him when turning, and he narrowly avoids hitting the other driver (5:18-5:50). A police officer directs traffic around an accident shown on the side of the road, as police paramedics bandage a man’s head (5:51-6:17). The sergeant from the education unit talks to the camera (6:18-6:36). The man walks out of an insurance agency, tucks his new policy into his suit pocket, gets into his car, and drives off (6:37-7:03). The video ends with the training binder being closed (7:18-7:27).

Sergeant Bruce reporting [Music] this is a story that takes place in your town on many days of the year inside these nice pleasant homes the man of the house is cramming his breakfast sipping scalding coffee and trying to put his hat and coat on at the same time in other words they're going to work and as usual they're a little late that is all but one this is M donigan and he's taking the morning off he's going to the doctors for a physical examination and he never has felt better in his life 6 months ago the insurance company told him he'd have to get that blood pressure down before he could buy any more life insurance so he watched his diet cut out smoking and got plenty of sleep he feels great it's a beautiful morning it's good to be alive and at peace with the world temper Mac right now he's fighting a primitive urge to chase after that driver and tell him off but it wouldn't be a good idea could only make him mad and this morning he isn't going to good guess man this intersection gives him trouble every morning well there's no rush this morning so he'll just wait for some kind driver to give him a break there's a chance it's a plot that's what it is he's only gone to block and twice his patience is worn thin look at each mind with not a single thought to get to work on time in a mob like that there's not much you can do about it just relax and accept the situation think of something nice listen to the radio you're just about on time anyway and you haven't insulted a single driver it's not too bad if you just take it easy now what everything was going fine he was just driving along minding his own business and this happens [Music] you would have to pick the wrong lane of traffic on a morning like this hey Mac remember your appointment remember that life insurance policy your family needs it come on let him in somebody now there's somebody with a heart he's probably in a bigger Hur than mac but he's willing to give him a break that should make you feel better Mac maybe next time you'll do the same for somebody else it works both ways you know keeps everybody happier and safer drivers will do things like this they'll hold up a whole line of traffic in order to serve their own convenience it annoys you Mac but don't honk the horn the noise will just irritate you more here we go there are times when Mac wishes he were driving a tank this is one of those times is everyone crazy what's happening this morning anyway but this is ridiculous by now Mac realizes that it's all just a pot to make him mad and get his blood pressure up but it won't work he has control of himself something wrong m over there somebody lost his temper on the road and became a dangerous driver now he too has a date with a doctor but it's a sad one maybe tragic the kind that any driver can expect who gets upset by traffic irritations what I've been getting at is really pretty simple just common Horse Sense take a fighter the minute he gets mad he gets wild and is likely to get Hur first it's the same way with a driver allow your temper to rule your good judgment and you're lost the hospitals are full of people who were either angry when they got into their cars or who let traffic irritations get the best of keep your blood pressure down your hands on the wheel and your wit in the car with you just as Mack will do now that he's learned it pays off maybe it's a plot maybe it isn't but of one thing you can be sure the discourteous and irritating actions of others can cause a driver to do things which lead to accidents you can't always avoid these traffic irritations but you can be a better driver when you learn to take them in your stride [Music]
