James Durbin, of the Department of English, University of South California, suggests the idea of "commmunal tragedy, " the purpose of the lottery in community life; the traditional idea of blood sacrifice to the gods as a plea for a fruitful harvest; of the story as a "parable of our time, " of today's society. Companion film in the same series is "The Lottery By Shirley Jackson."
