more in the course of this film by now you've received your test results and your guidance counselor will be available to help you interpret them the purpose of this film is to give you a brief useful as an indicator of your potential and ability to learn the technical skills necessary for specialized military training purposes many Educators believe that its results hold true in civilian life as well thus since 1972 approximately 1 million high school students per year have taken the ASVAB in today's highly competitive job market you need all the help you can get in determining which Fields You may wish to explore now bear in mind while watching this film and evaluating your scores that no aptitude test can succeed in pinpointing all of your aptitudes as your counselor will explain this test is merely one indicator among others of where your aptitudes and talents May lie we suggest you use the information contained on the student result sheet as well as the pamphlet how to use your ASAP results in interpreting your scores now let's take a look at a sample ASVAB score sheet it's divided into several sections the section on the left of the sheet contains personal information such as your name sex and grade on the right there are two graph s the upper one shows your ranking compared to a Nationwide sample of high school students in your grade level this is referred to as your percentile score out of every 100 students that took the test Nationwide your score shows how well you ranked compared to the others on the result sheet your score is shown in the middle of a range of scores this is because all psychological tests have some error associated with them the range of scores is called called a percentile band you can be fairly certain that your true score in each aptitude area Falls somewhere within each band The Bottom graph shows how well you did compared to students of your grade in sex immediately to the left of either graph are two columns one gives you your percentile scores for the aptitude Composites the other gives the names for each of these six composits at the top of the column verbal reflects the ability to tie words [Music] together math represents your skill in mathematical operations knowledge and arithmetic reasoning ability perceptual speed refers to your speed and accuracy in using letters numbers and symbols mechanical represents your skills in understanding mechanical principles and visualizing three-dimensional objects trade technical refers to knowledge you have in aptitude areas of Automotive electronic and Shop practices academic ability measures those aptitudes considered important for formal academic schoolwork and higher education to see how well you did in verbal skills first find verbal in the appropriate column beside it will be your percentile score and on the graph immediately to the right will be a representation of how well you did compared to every group of 100 others who took the test in your same grade or your same grade in sex this applies for all composits on both graphs my asab scores are back wonder how I did let's look at this student score sheet to answer her question overall her scores are pretty good her percentile score shows that with her true score falling somewhere between 71 to 88 she did better than 80% of the students in verbo in MA math within a band from 62 to 81 she did better than 72% she also outperformed 65% of the students in trade Technical and she looks even better on the lower gra comparing her with other females in the same grade so you could say that she is a generally well-rounded individual with several options open to her however the exceptionally high score and perceptual speed would naturally influence her counselor's interpretation of her test results she might consider the areas of banking 10 15 16 17 and there's your change thank you ma'am have a nice day thank you computer science and other professions where speed and accuracy are [Applause] essential since I did well in mechanical does that mean I should become a an engineer well not necessarily let's take a look at your score sheet your highest score was in math with your percentile showing a score better than 77% of your fellow students note that your true score on math Falls between a low value of 68 and a high score of 86 your next highest score was in mechanical doing better than 75% of your peers your counselor will help you compare these scores with many other factors and possibly the area of engineering would be worth looking into how however you should be aware that there are other more likely possibilities both Technical and Vocational for individuals with your combination of aptitudes for example pilot3 immedate sound boots draft in this section here what dimensions do you want the sound bo uh we decided to go with a 20x 10 machinist drill press operator and certain other jobs both military and civilian these jobs require people who can understand the underlying principles of mechanics according to my scores I did well in more than one area but what does that mean you scored well in every composite but your average percentile scor show that you did better than 93% of your classmates in verbal and better than 85% in academic ability it's like examining the career opportun unities for a single individual with multiple skills indeed the possibilities are far ranging on the verbal side yes may I help you business management or Administration and the cold trend is expected journalism you through tonight this is Valerie cter reporting for TV3 Action News or public relations Ur follow these are just a few of the available choices this time I will answer any questions with such high academic aptitude higher education should be considered for a career in library science St clear [Music] [Music] medicine hi or [Music] law we cannot stress strongly enough that your counselor is your best source of information in trying to analyze your career opportunities it is predicted that during the next 10 years there will be three times the number of jobs for high school and college graduates with technical skills as there will be for comparable students without them I'm thinking about joining the military will this test help me get the kind of job that I want though it's impossible to state with absolute certainty just where you'd be placed your test shows that your best score was in mechanical doing better than 80% of those taking the test your score of 76% in trade technical would reinforce any decision to place you in some maintenance capacity which could include Air Force engine [Music] mechanic Marine Corps weapons technician [Applause] [Music] Navy Electronics [Music] technician Coast Guard machinist or Army heavy equipment operator the military should be viewed as any other potential employer and your local recruiter would be the best source of information in understanding what your future might be in the armed forces looks like I didn't score high in any area guess I failed huh no not at all you can't fail the asbab or any other aptitude test for that matter even though you may not have scored as well as others on some of the tests so you really didn't fail instead you pointed out a possible need to work on several areas indicated by the test your vocational counselor will help you determine the options available to you he or she may suggest additional specialized training in your stronger areas for example a technical education in an area you already have some interest in or even taking a class in a specialized vocational school this will further your development in areas where you do have interest and aptitude whatever his or her advice it will be strongly influenced by your own aspirations desires and interests the ASVAB cannot absolutely predict success or perfectly measure your vocational strengths and weaknesses because of the many uncontrolled factors that are involved and that's why your scores are shown within a possible range of scores but taken with your grades past work experiences goals interests motivation and more it can Aid in defining those broad vocational areas that you may be best suited for it's the kind of test you neither pass nor fail the ASVAB is used by the armed services for recruiting purposes and as we said earlier the military services and Coast Guard should be viewed as any other prospective employer they all offer good starting salaries I want you all turn to The Vocational Technical Training or Advanced education6 and in service benefits like travel and medical care for more information on Military careers contact your local recruiter in the service of your choice so in review this film has explained how the ASVAB is used how to read your percentile scores within percentile bands what the composits are and how they relate in general to vocational areas and and who you should contact for more information on various questions only you can make a success of your life but we hope the ASVAB May point the way by helping you discover yourself [Applause]
