Description: Shows how the spirit of the West African people has been passed down generation by generation through the black marching band. Follows the long tradition which began over 700 years ago as joyful funeral processions among the West African Yoruba, which influenced the style of Turkish and European martial music during the 17th and 18th centuries, and played an important part during the American Civil War. Shows the importance of the marching band to African American culture and history, a legacy which continues in New Orleans jazz processions and in half-times on football fields across the country. Narrated by Dizzy Gillespie.
