people need hospitals hospitals need people men and women with many kinds of aptitude and skill and one kind of willingness to work for the health of the community in this film we shall explore that World by looking inside a modern hospital watching people at work trying to discover what is needed to keep it going efficiently continuously to a newcomer perhaps a young nursing recruit a hospital might seem a world of its own busy orderly but rather bewildering as I walked into the hospital on the day I joined I can remember thinking they'll be far too busy to notice me sit where you like probably move you later that's just what my mom says can I help you no thanks I'm very early where I live it was that train on nothing this is the only time in my life I shall sit here like this like a patient when I'm trained I should be looking after them coming to collect them take them off somewhere I don't know where when I'm trained how's that for confidence before I've even started the three there I think the others went straight to the nurse's home if any more arrive will you send them across I will sister thank you shall we go over now let me take it for you quite a pleasant room isn't it yes it is very pleasant get rid of all my stuff at home bring it all up here now yeah you got plenty place to put your things in I wonder how long it takes to find out what a hospital like this is really like to know what's happening at any time of the day or night to begin to understand what everyone does seems theend in Olive cuz it's got holes in it I don't suppose I ever will but it and how they should go about it now I think that unless as a nurse you have at heart the care of each individual patient then I think it's useless doing nurs as we asked Mr brenel originally to uh book her for Hospital confinement but she was booked for her confinement we were waiting for Mr brenel to come back and see her again before we said anything to anybody is this the first pregnan yes and how 23 and how long you had diabetes I think as in all professions there is a change in some ways this Chang is for the better and I do think one of the great changes is that as medicine has changed so nursing has changed uh I regard all the nurses as being part of the team part of the medical or surgical team on which they work I think that we require much more Technical and scientific help from our nurses than we did a generation ago the um duty of a consultant in relation to the nursing staff is a very special one and I think probably I would say my main duty is not to be too aloof and too away from their interests hello Mr gy how are you really is this is very good and is the talking better now oh yes much better than just take the glasses off for me yeah and the the Curious Thing is that the left pupil Still Remains rather bigger than the right in this respect I think when you have Junior nurses in out patients or on Ward round the thing to do is to try and bring them in and explain things to them and make them interested in the in the work they're doing and indeed to be part of the team when do you want to go home laying up procedures one wipe trolley down with clean swab and soap and water or antiseptic dry with disposable paper towel discard paper towel two lay unopened packs lotions bandages Etc on bottom shelf of trolley three wheel trolley to off and put it on like that you'll be able to manage well the idea is to wear it in the daytime when you're walking around and take it off at night so your leg doesn't swell right this SP stand up for walking yes I but I should be able to drive my car no you've still got your car have you I have at the moment but have you got a son or a daughter or anybody who could perhaps take you out a little I've got a something that takes over take me out um as you know the doctors are thinking of sending you home soon and they've asked me to come along and have a word with you um to see how you're going to manage at home whether everything's all right and um if there's any way in which we can help you at all take one yeah she is the marker you stay still just let me move now in a moment Mr King I get that say line [Music] I'm going out on the bleep Pauline thank you matron the hospital must be a happy relaxed atmosphere for the patients but it also must have discipline kindly discipline this is necessary for patient safety but the patients are individuals as also are the staff it is necessary to have a few rules R to run a large establishment such as this but these are kept to a minimum nurses are regarded as individuals and they are expected to behave and act as responsible beings I hope that we have a kindly understanding of one another's job that is the nurse feels that she can come to me at any time with her problems and that I will always stop to listen and help would you like to put me through please thank you I feel that if we give all grades of Staff the opportunity to voice their Grievances and grumbles in a completely informal meeting at regular intervals and that the staff know that this meeting will take place that we shall have less unofficial grumbles and that people will feel more satisfied well over to you um M I've been asked on behalf of our set um about the parking tickets that have been putting on put on the cars um in the nurse's Bays Miss H um Can the tutors come and work with the nurses on the waters again please I never know the visiting times I come in at all funny hours you got anybody coming tonight yes my daughter oh where she where does she live hon reges she married married no well she was married but she lost her husband did she H how old is she then all about 60 how old are you then if your daughter's 60 scarce look 60 yourself well I'm 79 I don't feel it though don't you well you don't look it really how many grandchildren have you got or about 40 40 grandchildren yes I've got eight 14 great grandchildren you must have pretty well populated H reges by yourself how do you like it in the ward here I do very much nice bright W very happy Ward do you think it's happy yes I do I do you haven't been down to the rehab Mrs Marsh diabetes pregnancy and toxemia it's had a good day fetal heart herd is 140 24-hour urine collection continues from 10:00 a.m. to 10: a.m. daily you had a laxative through 24 hour collections for easol levels how's everything staff US fine thank you at the moment sir um we've got a small child coming with a fraed tibia we've got an Easters lat on for this yes we have and the mother is here she's find consent form and I think we can do it at about half 10 according to atist uhhuh we're up at the anemia Clinic you want to LIF please come on you look a bit anemic Jackie oh you always W happen and I knew I answered it so I asked hello when you're elected don't you have to go through some trial or other no no no nothing exciting like continu trial there after get on and on and on joh time I think I need it I need to be able to help morning sister did you come to our disco last night yes it was quite good wasn't it did you like it things are very confusing at first but they soon on your uniform yet yes then we to wear it on Monday going oh not bad I GA we start today with eye test then a visit from the local GP buy some books and then later on we have to see a film on what
