Day At The Zoo (1940s)

man is always interested in the rest of the animal kingdom many of the denizens of fireplaces seem almost human and from them we can learn a lot various kinds of monkeys live happily as one big family in one big cave it's the fun spot of the zoo the alert keen-eyed marmosets have come all the way from brazil the monkeys seem as interested in us as we are in them wakari of uh south america is certainly wondering what it's all about in the monkey park there's lots of fun some new arrivals are being released to become permanent guests they seem a little uncertain about their new home but it's better than the little box and they take a chance so now for a swim across the island [Music] all the conveniences of a popular beach resort in monkey land 2 there are bullies who boss the smaller ones chico is a great favorite with the children he takes a long walk with them every day [Music] and then the luxury of a rub-down for one must keep fit the trainer does all the work while the big fella just watches his friends pass by the pool in crocodile park looks like florida these big fellas are equally at home on shore or in the water always dangerous their mighty jaws with sharp teeth and snap shut with lightning speed they're one of the terrors of tropical streams the great lizards were on earth ages before man centuries ago they battled with other prehistoric monsters and one to survive down through the ages today they live on remote islands in tropical seas the hermit crabs are interesting little fellas they take possession of the abandoned shells of other small sea animals and carry them as they move about [Music] penguins with their human actions are always fascinating they give us friendly greetings this family from africa looks like men in masquerade but they seem to take life very seriously the sparkling pool calls an author they've just gone last one in is it they're just a lot of and soon they come back for applause and to strut in their swallow tail coats [Music] this flock of rosy pelicans comes to us from africa graceful birds in spite of their huge bills their feathers have a faint rosy pink blush they're slightly larger than the american white pelican beautiful birds tame and friendly the little pocket gopher is a burrowing rodent from the western states industrious but destructive an enemy to farmers interesting to watch but bad for growing crops the african porcupines are strange looking creatures like their american brothers they rely on their sharp quills for defense smart dogs keep their distance the others get quills in their noses others beware for these quills are sharp the beard ends always attract great crowds this sitka brown bear from alaska looks friendly as he begs for peanuts but he's really a dangerous beast an enemy of man [Music] the polar bear from zero climates is one of the most majestic species of the bear family in our temperatures he finds it hard to keep cool and he suffers from the heat so he stays pretty much in the cold water chilled by blocks of ice and does he love ice he greets it like a long lost friend and welcomes its soothing chill but he'd like to be back in the arctic with the icebergs again the lion house is always crowded for people are attracted by these majestic animals of the african jungles the king of beasts is a handsome and dignified fellow but it's just as well he's safely caged the stealthy jaguar of the southern states in south america is another fine example of the family of big cats larger than the leopard he's a clever hunter sphinx like now but he's dreaming of days when he leaped on helpless prey the wildcats are dangerous and treacherous never tamed never trusted mean and tricky there's a bounty on their heads in the far west even the young cubs are unfriendly and an enemy of man they don't like dogs either and they give the battle cry [Music] the worst of southern asia is a primitive form of primate the slowest moving animal known he always takes his time even when doing nothing his big sensitive eyes avoid the light of day or he sees best at night that's when he hunts and feeds mountain goats oh no barbary sheep that inhabit the arid country of the mountains of north africa graceful sure-footed animals living safely and peacefully in remote inaccessible places these young giraffes are from the plains of central africa with their long graceful necks they can feed on leaves and twigs that other animals cannot reach and when they get a chance they can certainly cover ground [Music] today babies are often born in captivity when young with their long legs and necks they're clumsy but they grow up fast and often attain a height of 18 feet a little funny face but to mother he's a beautiful darling when he grows up he'll be as handsome as the rest the hippos breed in captivity too and mother teaches her offspring all the tricks of life in a zoo like making faces at the audience and begging peanuts the hippopotamus comes from tropical africa where it lives in streams and feeds on vegetation it stays submerged much of the time occasionally coming up for air and it always has a big appetite that's just one reason why it wouldn't make a good household pet [Music] and he seems content in his big face here he knows when feeding time comes around and he leaves the water to eat the black rhinoceros of africa a large powerful animal with strong horns which when backed up by a couple of tons of weight and plenty of speed are formidable weapons that even lions fear this big fellow is a vegetarian but as belligerent as any of the carnivorous beasts elephants are always popular with the children and a baby elephant has as big a following as a movie star but for a long time he has no use for anyone but mother and she gets little rest while bringing up her youngster in the way he should go in a well-regulated zoo someday he'll pay more attention to the peanuts of the visitors but today they're justin useless mother is all important and she knows it too the sumatran elephant has no family cares that finds plenty of time to leave in the big pool must have her bath every day but when back home it's her custom to be in the water more than other elephants and two when there's an audience she likes to show off of it and although she can't high dive she can plunge and but she does
