Dame Edith Sitwell

Description: Episode of Series “Face to Face”. John Freeman interviews Dame Edith Sitwell with the aim of observing the person behind the public face. A distinguished poet who lists her recreations as “listening to music and silence”. She received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Leeds, Durham, Oxford and Sheffield and was an Honorary Associate of the American Institute of Arts and Letters. Her first poems were published in 1915. This interview was recorded in 1959. Dame Edith Sitwell died on 9th December, 1964, at the age of 77, a few days after finishing her memoirs “Taken care of”.
