Description: Produced by the BBC for the British Open University Explains that oceans have circulation patterns analogous to patterns of general climate and local weather in the atmosphere, caused by such factors as the movement of winds over the surface of the water, differences in the density of water masses, and the rotation of the earth. Describes the international 1973 Mid-Ocean Dynamics Experiment, which attempted to find small-scale oceanic circulation patterns by analyzing eddies in the North Atlantic near the Gulf Stream.
