Description: Describes and illustrates basic principles of X-ray diffraction of single crystals and their application to structure determinations. Describes a new technique developed by scientists of the National Bureau of Standards for obtaining crystal structures of high pressure forms of materials. Develops the concept of pressure-temperature phase equilibrium diagrams and illustrates by striking sequences of high pressure transitions in carbon tetrachloride, potassium nitrate, water and benzene.
