The film is set in medieval Italy, in the duchess of Sidona. Renzo and Raniero are two friends who have been travelling together for two years, having adventures, fighting duels and womanizing. On their way back to Sidona after a two year absence, they encounter Fulvia, a former lover of Renzo. The two men fight a duel which Renzo easily wins. The Duke's daughter, Francesca, regards Renzo as a bad influence but is attracted to him.
