Description: This vintage bicycle safety film dates to the 1940s and was produced in the United Kingdom in an era when bicycles were in more common use as transportation. The film shows various accident scenarios in city traffic, using the story of a boy named Henry to show how improper riding techniques can endanger pedestrians, riders and drivers. The film begins with a barker narrating a story about a bicycle rider who is named Henry. At mark 0:42, Henry is seen with his father at a bicycle shop and they test the brake and other functions of the bike. He nods his head that he is prepared to be the buyer. Now Henry’s face lights up with joy. At mark 1:00, he carries the bike and placed it on the road and start to ride. Henry sails along till he meets Jim and Bill at mark 1:30 and they all headed for a nasty spill. At mark 1:50, they do a silly trick, and all hold each other’s arms and keep riding. At mark 2:00, the boys fall off their bikes with wheels spinning. Henry sees his bike on the ground and stands up to pick it up. At mark 2:20, they went on riding. They kept on biking recklessly. At mark 2:54, Henry crashes into a vegetable seller. At mark 3:10, he rides with a friend at the back. At mark 3:43, he kept on riding his bike recklessly not caring for pedestrians. At mark 3:50, he drove thru a traffic light without regarding the signs and is about to crash into an old couple. At mark 4:10, Henry didn’t read signs to halt and collided with a bus and his bike is damaged. The passengers came around him and all faces were grim up as they mentioned his name. at mark 5:00, he is seen at the court as he is juried by the judge. The battered cycle lies on the table. At mark 5:30, the witnesses are called on to testify against him. The driver also talks at mark 6:10. At mark 6:25, Henry testifies. At mark 6:40, the judge says the blame lies with Henry and the verdict is spoken at mark 7:35. He is guilty and was asked not to ride for two long years -- now he will have to walk. At mark 7:50, the judge admonishes riders to be careful and always bike safely.

I'll tell you now a dread FL and of w about a wicked crime committed not so long ago hey come along young gentlemen stand anywhere you like Gaze on the picture of the shop where Henry found his bike see Henry's father test the brakes bend down and pinch the tire he nods his head and says that he's prepared to be the [Applause] buyer now Henry's face lights up with boy the bike shall be his pride his father stays behind to pay jumps on to ride [Music] [Applause] [Music] so Henry sails along the street till he meets Jim and bill they ride a breast and play the fool all heading for a [Music] spill downfall the bikes off come the boys the wheels spin madly round and Henry's lovely bicycle is lying on the [Music] ground but when he finds that all is well and little Damage Done he shouts come on SO swerving laughing turning round their foolish tricks they start the motors hoot the driver's yell he's bound to hit a [Music] [Applause] [Music] cart so Dave by day the bike fares worse for Henry is unkind he mounts the bike and rides in front his pal sits up [Music] behind the wheels are bent the brakes are torn the mud guards Trail and swing but Henry drags it round the place tied up with bits of Str [Music] R and still he rides his Reckless race nor cares for man or child shoots past the warning yellow light in manner rude and wild the TR to Halt he does not read the crossroad lies ahead a mighty bus looms up and then Henry's poor bike lies [Music] dead the passers by all gather round with faces hard and grim and Henry understands at last what people think of him now every mouth spits out his name Whispers on every breath that is the boy young Henry Brown who rode his bik to [Music] death the judge and jury stare at him with pained and saddened eyes for on the table cold and still The Battered cycle [Music] lies I now accuse you Henry Brown of doing this foul act I call upon the witnesses to verify the fact I saw him at the corner sir he didn't pause nor Luke it weren't the driver's fault M Lord I'll swear that on the book I now shall call on driver Jones to come and testify I tried to Swerve sir it was too late I had no room to get by he passed the sign and crossed my track I heard my brakes all squeal the bus was heavy and I caught his bike on the back wheel and now you boy speak up and tell your part in this sad tale I never saw the sign to Halt I just felt my brakes fail a boy who rides a bicycle should careful be and Keen see the brakes and other parts all work on his machine if boys would ride with proper care watch each light and sign there'd be far fewer accidents to waste my precious time you be dead young Henry Brown but what occurs to us is how much Graver it would have been had you upset the bus your story now is clear to me I see where lies the blame and when the jury does declare I think they'll find the same now Foreman of the jury speak your verdict I will note the body is guilty please Mead by majority vote we find you guilty and I say you shall no longer ride for two long years you'll have to walk take that poor thing [Music] outside the moral of this yarn is clear to stress it I should like you have a duty to the world when you ride on your bike
