Description: The painstaking technical and artistic processes involved in creating the original cast album recording of the musical comedy Company are documented in this cinema verité study. Performances by cast members are interwoven with interviews with Stephen Sondheim, the musical's composer/lyricist, record producer Thomas Z. Shepard, director Harold Prince, musical director, Harold Hastings and playwright George Furth. For singer/actress Elaine Stritch, the recording session proved particularly arduous and frustrating. Tuning and re-tuning her performance late into the night, she finally succumbed to exhaustion and had to return the next morning to complete her track.
