Community Helpers - Overview

foreign [Music] do you live in a big city like this one or do you live in a small town with very few people [Music] maybe you live near a lake or ocean or in the desert where there's very little water communities are different from each other they're located in different areas of the country and the people do different jobs in this community the land is very good for growing crops so most of the people work on farms but in this community many of the people work in Coal Mines deep inside the Earth [Music] and in this large city many people work in tall Office Buildings or in big factories that make many products [Music] people in these communities also wear different clothes when they work [Music] and the houses that they live in are very different but the communities are also very much alike they all have certain people that work for the community including police officers firefighters sanitation workers utility workers medical and health workers features and postal workers [Music] every Community also has a city commission or city council that makes rules for people to live by a community is very much like a family in a family each person depends on the other to do a special job this family has just moved into a new house the father is going to put a new carpet in the house while the mother is putting up the wallpaper each is depending on the other to do his or her job well they are also depending on their children to help them too this boy is helping his father measure the carpet before it is cut and this girl is helping her mother by mixing the paste for the wallpaper each person depends on the others to do their jobs what special jobs do you do around the house people in a community cannot do everything themselves they need the goods and services that other people provide and the people that provide the goods and services specialize by doing one job that they are able to do best sometimes people who do special jobs work in big factories like this one on this assembly line there are many workers and they are all doing Special jobs each person depends on the others to do their jobs well and they depend on each other to come to work every day if this woman didn't come to work today what do you think would happen to these other workers if she decided not to come to work there would be no one to make the parts that these workers need they would not be able to work and they might not be paid this man does a special job too but he doesn't make a product as the other workers do he provides US service he repairs televisions although John is the only person working in his company he also depends on other people when he needs parts to fix a television he relies on another company to supply him with the things that he needs but this is server they pay him for his Services just as people pay for the products that the factory makes when they buy them in stores but some community services are paid for in a different way what about this firefighter do people pay him every time he puts out a fire or what about this police officer do we pay her every time she writes a ticket people like the firefighter and the police officer who work for the community are paid by the people who live in the community the people pay Community workers with tax money this money is collected from people who work buy goods or services or own property in a community part of the money collected goes to pay the community workers for their services the rest of the money is used for many other things that the community needs but who decides how this money is spent the people who decide which services are needed and how the money should be spent are called Community leaders some of the community leaders like Commissioners or council members are elected by the people [Music] this man is telling these people how he will help the community if they will vote for him and he is elected [Music] but there are other community leaders who are not elected the positions of police chief and director of utilities are appointed by elected officials all of these Community leaders need to work together to help their town or city they have meetings and talk about the problems of the community and they also decide how much money should be spent for Community Services many of these leaders also make rules that help to solve Community problems or help to protect people does your community have some of these rules [Music] every Community has schools that help to teach children but not all learning takes place at school communities have other places where children and adults can learn there are libraries that have books about almost anything that you can think of some have museums that teach people about the past or what the future will be like and some have art galleries that have paintings by many famous artists and large auditoriums where many kinds of music are played communities also have places where people can go to have fun or just relax this community has a large public beach area where people can go swimming boating or water skiing and this community has a park where people come to have a picnic jog [Music] or play baseball in many large cities such as this one there are zoos where people can see animals from all over the world does your community have many places like these where do you go to have fun communities are always changing sometimes people leave a community like this old mining town when there are no jobs but sometimes communities grow larger many cities grow bigger because people move there to find jobs big cities like this one can have many problems that small communities do not have this city needs to build more roads to help these cars and trucks move safely and more quickly and growing communities need more places for people to live so new apartments and houses must be built many large cities have problems with air pollution from cars and factories [Music] and others have problems with polluted water the leaders of these communities must work very hard if they hope to solve these problems is there a button the child can put what is the time delay on it will be a pedestrian actuator signal they build New Roads to help the traffic move faster and they pass laws that help to stop pollution but Community leaders cannot do all the work by themselves they depend on each person in the
