Description: Made in 1952, "Command of the Seas" is a series of four, full color films that document America's post-WWII Navy. Intended to promote the important role the fleet could play in Cold War conflicts (such as the recently-stalemated Korean War), the films showcase an era of growth and expansion. As new, nuclear powered submarines and angled deck aircraft carriers take to the seas, helicopters, missiles, rockets and jet fighters take to the skies. This "Command of the Seas" film concentrates on the Atlantic Fleet and CINCLANT. Since the days of the Constitution, the American Navy had never suffered defeat (:56). The British have remained staunch allies of the Navy, fighting side by side for two World Wars (1:24). Joint training operations are conducted with other allies, the French and Italians to ensure cohesive teamwork (1:53). The US Navy's efficient productive capacity provides military and economic aide to their oversea allies (2:36). These nations and other Atlantic nations have joined the Naval Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in unison to prevent aggression (2:55).At friendly ports around the world civilian visitors climb aboard ships (3:30). A battleship in Naples, drops anchor while paying the Sixth Fleet a visit (4:01). A priest from Florence is invited aboard to provide services for the men (4:36). The Eiffel tower is shown as other navy men go ashore in Paris (4:55), and are also welcomed into Denmark (5:36). An American ambassador in Lisbon, visits one of the large ships (7:22) and the ships Marine Guard stands inspection (7:27). There is an official salute as he departs (8:05). Ranking Portuguese officer's pay a visit as well (8:19). To contrast and visualize the progress of the power of Navy, a battleship is pictured next to an old time sail boat (8:31). Target practice is drawn for crew training (9:17). In the Mediterranean and Atlantic, the Sixth Fleet conducts training maneuvers with other friendly nations to standardize all operations (9:52).The carriers are capable of holding large planes which carry and transport atom bombs (10:16). The Navy has developed anti- submarine battleships and these employ hunter killer teams composed of aircrafts, surface ships and submarines (11:18).As the carrier is a core piece of the Navy, it enabled planes and Lighter Than Air Crafts to refuel and remain mobile across almost any part of the sea (11:53). A newer type of submarines, constructed to run at high speeds for long periods of time, was one of the largest undersea crafts in the world (13:20). Another development in underwater detection was the helicopter with listening devices (14:04). The Destroyer included special antisubmarine weapons (14:15). The film draws to the conclusion with the notion that so long as the Navy remained alert, no force of aggression would be able to challenges it’s "command of the sea" (15:02).

[Music] in order to protect our worldwide economic lifelines and commitments with our lives our Navy must maintain command of the seeds Western man learned to build his ships and navigate them within the area of the Atlantic and Mediterranean and the balance of naval power still lies there since the days of the Constitution the American Navy has never suffered defeat today our ships range the Atlantic and the Mediterranean putting in at friendly harbors the British have been our staunch allies in guiding the destiny of the world through sea power and their officers and men have stood to watch with us through two world wars the French are traditional knives of the United States airplanes take off from our carriers in training exercises designed to standardize combined operations with us today as members of the community of atlantic nations dedicated to maintaining a peaceful world their pilots like those of the french in other nations integrate their training with our own [Music] our great productive capacity permits us to provide military and economic aid for our allies overseas the strain upon their own production is lessened and standardization of equipment is achieved the United States and other Atlantic nations have joined in contributing naval power through NATO the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to provide a total greater than that of any aggressor nations only in this way can peace be preserve the peaceful intentions of our ships have never been questioned by reasonable nations of the world they have dropped anchor in friendly ports all over the Atlantic and Mediterranean area and the people of those ports have come aboard as friendly visitors where they have seen for themselves the modern power which our ship's represent keeping alive the warm friendships of past years is one of the important missions of our Navy abroad while there are forces at work to destroy our associations with our allies British Reds like our own waves always enjoy the seagoing Navy so long as the combined navies of the Western world share common interests the Peace of the world will be protected one of our big battleships drops anchor off maples deep inside the Mediterranean on a visit to our sixth fleet no ship of any other nation on earth can challenge the firepower of this battleship of ours in a time of peace she offers her salute of friendship to a friendly nations port and in the calm of the seven her church pennant flies for divine service here not far from where Christianity was born a priest from Florence has been invited to hold services aboard one of our carriers [Music] to maintain the peace and protect the peoples of these countries our ships stand watch or move on patrol Liberty ashore for the men of the fleet in call marking a century and more of closest friendship for American Navy men in contrast with an old-time sailing ship one of our battleships rides at anchor in the harbor a symbol of all naval power has increased our Navy is a roving ambassador of American friendship moving from country to country all over the world offering assurance that we and the world desire peace through it we project our power overseas to keep war from our own Shores commanding the seas and making them a barrier to any enemy of freedom always alert it requires only seconds to man the guns whether it is an enemy plane or only a target drone that offers a challenge to crew frightening [Music] [Music] [Music] our sixth fleet in the Atlantic and Mediterranean conducts fleet training maneuvers with the ships of friendly nations to standardize operations by its presence it offers assurance of protection against any aggressor nations and the combined forces of our allies sail with us our aircraft carriers are capable of handling big planes carrying the atom bomb and moving them to areas from which they can hit the heart of any enemies defenses or forces tomorrow's carriers will handle even larger plane [Music] if aggression comes what are the greatest threats to our victory they lie in the enemy's submarine fleets the Navy has developed any submarine tactics employing utter killer teams composed of aircraft surface ships and submarines with the carrier as the core of modern sea power its planes can operate from this mobile landing field to extend anti-submarine search hundreds of miles in any direction as a part of the Hunter Killer team for the modern carrier is a highly mobile highly defensible and self-sufficient airfield which can move at 40 miles per hour across almost any part of the oceans within the scope of the hunter-killer team it provides a replenishment base for the lighter-than-air craft but crews far exceed in search for enemy submarines refueling techniques at sea extend the functions of lighter-than-air craft to make them a stable platform as a satellite to the carrier in utter killer operations a vital member of the team is one of our new type submarines constructed to run at high speed below the surface for long periods of time it is one of the most modern undersea craft in the world [Music] [Music] but other modern development in underwater detection is the helicopter equipped with listening devices operated from close above the ocean surface still another partner in the Hunter Killer combination is a destroyer operating special anti-submarine weapon once an enemy submarine is located his time will be short [Music] [Music] as long as our Navy remains prepared and alert no enemy force in the Atlantic or elsewhere will ever successfully challenge our command of the scenes [Music]
