Description: Animation is used to illustrate the general phenomena of comets and the radical transformations which occur as they approach the sun. Composed of a mixture of stony material and the ice of frozen gases, comets are left over from the creation of planets. The film shows how a comet is transformed from a cold lump to a luminous apparition, how it develops a tail, and how it eventually decays and disappears into the far reaches of space. Discusses Halley's comet and its path past earth in 1985/86.
