Beginning with Asbury's arrival, the scene shifts quickly to the Revolutionary War, the Christmas Conference and the appearance of the Circuit Riders. With the religious fever spawned by the Great Awakening, the young church symbolically awakens to the issues and problems of America. Methodists can be found on the Trail of Tears, in the gold fields of California and fighting on both sides of the Civil War. In the late 19th century the church is building colleges and hospitals in this county and missions abroad. With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, Methodists adopt a social creed. They crusade for the rights of the factory workers, the cause of women's suffrage and the Temperance Movement. Today the 10 million Americans who call themselves United Methodists don't agree on every issue. They don't even speak the same language!
