[Music] thank you in 1811 Captain Porter dictated to the ship's writer and historic letter addressed to the Secretary of the Navy based on his own experience in keeping fighting men well and fit experience gained while fighting pirate fleets off North Africa as Captain Porter correctly stated scurvy is due to the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet today we know that these Foods furnace is scurvy preventing vitamin C in which the official Navy ration of Porter's day was deficient in his letter Captain Porter said in the Mediterranean for opportunities of providing fresh fruits for the crew were not so frequent my vessel was constantly supplied with lemon juice by which means my men were never affected by scurvy he said further Beyond a doubt the most powerful remedy for this complaint is lemons or limes with which the hospital Department should always be supplied the Navy ration of 1811 was composed of foods which would keep on Long voyages salt pork cheese heart attack molasses today we know that these dry Foods furnish plenty of energy or calories protein calcium iron vitamin A and vitamin B but lack the element which prevents scurvy Captain Porter recommended to the Navy that lemons be added to this diet because he had found that lemons prevented scurvy this preventive element in lemons is known today as Vitamin C as essential as it is Vitamin C is not the only vitamin required in the diet the need for good nutrition has not changed since Porter's time but it is better understood today nutrition authorities now recommend that certain foods rich in all the essentials be eaten every day milk fresh or canned and cheese all rich in protein and calcium oranges lemons grapefruit Tomatoes raw cabbage or Salad vegetables some raw some cooked chiefly to furnish vitamin A potatoes and other vegetables and fruits in season to give bulk and additional vitamins and minerals bread and cereal whole grain products or enriched white bread and flour these for energy and vitamin B AIT poultry or fish dried beans peas or nuts as sources of protein and the vitamin B complex butter and other vitamin Rich spreads such as margarine and peanut butter for more energy eggs to supply protein fats vitamins and minerals particularly iron these are the foods that make up the adequate diet of the government's nutrition program eat foods from these groovy day plan meals to include them for good nutrition the typical breakfast of toast and coffee is an example of poor nutrition lacking in energy and in vitamins to improve it add a whole grain cereal milk eggs now we have adequate energy to begin the day's work and a good start on our mineral and vitamin quarters but we need to add the morning glass of orange juice to supply vitamin C another typically inadequate meal is the meat potato and bread habit each a wholesome food but as a meal short on vitamins green and yellow vegetables properly cooked put life and color vitamins and minerals into this far better meal good nutrition also approves this new use of an old favorite lemonade as average with a meal another appetizing way to get vitamin C a hot dog and a bottle of pop for lunch maybe all right on circus day but as a regular diet it falls far short of good nutrition pack a lunch with a punch to safeguard the health and vitality of both worker and school child whole wheat or enriched bread sandwiches with meat or cheese eggs milk and fruit particularly oranges make an energy and vitamin filled lunchbox many lunchmakers cut the orange in quarters or partially peel it for the convenience of the hurried worker an orange is the ideal sweet to top off The Lunchbox meal Ice Cold Lemonade in The Lunchbox is a double duty drink that quenches first and knocks out fatigue you can be sure this vacuum always comes back empty the worker who wants his lemonade oftener brings a small bottle of sweetened lemon juice from home he has it handy for mixing his own
