In 1981, martial law was declared in Poland, preventing the filmmaker from documenting the activities of Solidarity, the independent, self-governing trade union. Instead, he interviewed Polish visitors and recent immigrants who describe their experiences in the workers' movement. Their stories of personal turning points and national upheavals form an historical overview of events and the values embodied in them.
