Description: Traces roots of modern revivalism to 18th century Europe, when the church moved away from its aristocratic approach (The Age of Reason) to the more open, enthusiastic style through the efforts of George Whitefield and John Wesley--founders of the Methodists. Examines Voltaire's criticisms of the corrupt French church, his exile to England, and his death in Paris before the Revolution. Relates Wesley's teachings of Hell and his conviction that the great Lisbon earthquake was God's punishment for earthly sins. Ends with suggestion that the Methodist church has lost much of its enthusiasm, but still appeals to huge congregations and was the origin of the revivalism that thrives today.
