Description: Describes the route of the Oregon Trail and explains some of the motivation behind the westward movement. Re-creates life with a wagon train., Portrays and traces a portion of the 2,000 mile trip by wagon train from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon as experienced by 14-year-old Jim Daniels. Jim and the other children are seen performing their daily chores, gathering wood and dried buffalo chips for the fires, fetching water, and attending an improvised school at the end of each day. Pictures the children's excitement over their first encounter with Indians and Jim's acquiring of an Indian pony. Cites the difficulties met enroute, which include rain, cold, heat, dust, sickness, and death. During the journey Jim's younger sister Susan dies.
