Description: "Cater for Safety" presents a 1970's era look into food and kitchen safety basics. Curt British narration accompanies various scenarios of food safety follies. Through the examples viewers learn safe knife techniques as well as how to handle kitchen equipment such as stove top ranges, espresso machines, electric toasters and meat slicers properly.  It opens with a series of commercial restaurant employees greeting the cameraman (:22). A nurse slaps jelly on toast (:49). Upon noticing the electric toaster is jammed; she goes for a metal knife (1:00) to fix the job. Elsie gets a small shock from the still powered toaster blowing the fuse (1:00). The knife handle is noted to be a nonconductive material (1:11) protecting Elsie’s life. A cook cracks eggs into a large sizzling skillet (1:23). She spins off leaving the pan of oil unattended (1:45). The fat overheats (1:58) and inevitably erupts into flame. A prep cook named Jillian (4:17); in a dangerous hurry neglects to pull the bake tray out of the oven in order to flip steaks (4:23). She gets a nasty burn (4:32). On the cafeteria line (4:43) a prep cook is distracted by a coworker (4:45) receiving a burn in the process. A sloppy cafe barista (5:11) burns her hand on hot water. Another chef lazily bounces an oven door open without ensuring enough space for his reach, (5:20) and burns himself. Third degrees burns are zoomed in on (5:36). A woman bussing tables (5:48) slips on a pool of water. How to properly dispose of broken dishes is explained (6:25). The trash remover is pierced with cracked ceramic plate ware (6:44). Human error is discussed (7:03). As the narrator exits, he is saved from two workplace related accidents (7:29). A tossed banana peel (7:31) and attractive woman nearly thwart his escape from work (7:44). [Music] morning morning good morning morning morning good morning morning morning morning morning morning morning good morning good morning morning that is just what it was not to be a good morning Elsie harow tried to dislodge a slice of bread stuck in an electric toast without first disconnecting the power supply luckily she only blew the fuse but if the knife handle had been metal instead of a non-conductive material the story might have had a different ending I've Come Dancing I think it's beautiful wish I could dance like and C you done it once man PL yes made a Mary Harris left a pan of boiling oil unattended never allow fat or oil to overheat and if you must go away even if it's only for a couple of ticks turn off the gas or electricity for fortunately when the oil caught a light no one was injured but the kitchen had to be closed for a while to clear up the mess it doesn't rain put my oh well it doesn't Joy Watts was being a bit heavy-handed and a glass shattered a nasty gash needing eight stitches Stites when handwashing glasses it is safer to wash them one at a time and rubber gloves do not provide full protection empty the sink of water that way you'll know where the broken glass is a few more Tomatoes Chef I ain't got time come we need some more Tom John Vincent in his haste forgot all his training and experience John required hospital treatment June Lucas was slicing meat without the guard in place not surprisingly she also sliced the tops of her fingers June had to make several visits to the hospital never use a slicing machine without the guard in place and when cleaning disconnect the power and don't forget to give the machine your undivided attention because the blade is just as sharp at rest as it is in motion Barbara LX was using a food mixer fitted with a balloon whisk paying more attention to her conversation than to the task in hand the kitchen cloth looped into her apron became entangled she tried to free it never attempt to interfere with the functioning of a food mixer without first switching off its power supply and remember to keep your kitchen cloth well clear in that sort of situation Jillian Benton was in a bit of a hurry there was a long queue for gamon's steak says can do two more steaks please right now and she tried to save a few precious seconds by not moving the grill tray out far enough result a nasty burn to the side of her hand and an even longer Quee what's up we done Jean Buckingham was serving vegetables when a colleague distracted her how much Sten just for a split second she forgot where she was and lent on the hot ledge of the service counter the burn to her hand was only slight in fact she felt more foolish than her give me 35 Kath manners forgot what it was the customer had asked for sorry did you say instead of first turning off the boiling water supply ouch she took a chance she won't do that again in a hurry Clive Jones opened the oven door carelessly to remove a baking tray that's terrible result a painful burn and no Yorkshire puddings that day for lunch and brown carrying a tray of dirty Crockery through the kitchen didn't notice the pool of water ahead of her and slipped badly bruising her hip and thigh oh my leg what have you done to yourself if you spill water or any other substance for that matter wipe it up straight away before someone perhaps you breaks their neck Joe Harper without thinking created an accident situation by placing hazardous waste into a plastic sack never Place heavy or sharp waste matter in plastic sacks always ose of it safely later in the day Frank Harris was clearing up the cut to Frank's hand needed two stitches not my idea of a good morning was it yours we've just seen some of the many accidents that happen daily in in kitchens up and down the country a kitchen is only as safe as the people who work in it we're only Human After All with human failings the mind can be so easily distracted let's hope that uh we never make the same mistakes as those we've just seen so think safe be safe see you all tomorrow good night [Applause] good night Chef good night so think safe be safe and uh don't let yourself be distracted [Music] [Music]
