Casque d'or

PFA 1616-108-8459. Restricted: Not for research use.; Pacific Film Archive collection; non-circulating. CBPF.; The tragic love affair between an alluring underworld courtesan (Simone Signoret) and a young carpenter's assistant (Serge Reggiani) in turn-of-the-century Paris. Jacques Becker's detailed re-creation of the life and background of the period combines with the quality of the acting, particularly of Miss Signoret who here gives one of the finest performances of her career, to make this one of the great French films. In spite of the sordid events of the plot, which are nowhere glossed over, the film has a quality of affirmation, particularly in the open-air scenes, which owes much to the glowing sensuality of Simone Signoret's performance.; PFA 1616-108-8459.
