In response to the changing needs of the farming sector, the university offers a well-rounded education to equip students for a variety of roles. Key departments include Farm Management and Farm Engineering, with specialized courses in areas such as animal husbandry, animal nutrition, entomology, farm economics, and landscape design. Cal Poly Pomona's history can be traced back to 1938 when the first southern campus of Cal Poly, known as the Voorhis Unit, opened in San Dimas. In 1949, the land that was formerly the site of W.K. Kellogg's Ranch was transferred to Cal Poly. That land eventually became the California State Polytechnic College, Kellogg Unit. In 1956, all instruction was transferred to the Kellogg Unit and the college changed its name to California State Polytechnic College, Kellogg-Voorhis. The southern campuses eventually separated from the San Luis Obispo campus in 1966 and California State Polytechnic College, Pomona became the 16th college in what is now known as the California State University system. Six years later, the college gained university status and was renamed California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
