Burt Lancaster: A Centennial Celebration | Kirk Douglas

[Sung] It's great not to be nominated, great not to be nominated. Find us something for... next... year! [recorded applause] [applause] [Kirk Douglas, sung] Great not to be nominated, great not to be nominated... [applause and cheering] Thank you. Thank you. [applause and cheering] It's great not to be nominated... [applause and cheering] You know, thank you very much. It's too bad, but in here I will be on his shoulders and we will do a number for you. It'll be good. Burt and I would do certain songs he sung. I think he won. He was better in that. And in, so for example, one night at a charity event, I was the principal speaker and Burt Lancaster introduced me. Now hear what he said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, Kirk Douglas would be the first to tell you that he's very difficult to work with." [laughter] Then he just took a pause and then he said, "And I would be the second." [laughter] I think I will tell you something worse. We had another charity event and we are all at the dinner table, and Burt with his mouth full, said to me, "Kirk, why aren't you eating?" I said, "Burt, when I have something important to say, I - I want my stomach empty but my brain full." [light laughter] So after I made my speech, I came back to the table and Burt says, "You could have eaten." [laughter and applause] I miss Burt. We did five pictures together and we did a stage play. It was "The Boys in Autumn" and it was based on Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, 50 years later when they'd grown up. And we did it in San Francisco for six weeks. We were a smash. [light laughter] They liked us. But you know, it's hard to - see, when you get old, when I get old - I'm 96 now. [applause and cheering] But when you get old, you don't look ahead. This, the road is too short! So you look behind you at the long road of all that you'd done in life. And when I do that, one of the pleasant memories I have, is working with Burt Lancaster. He was a great guy. He was a, a good American. And he was a loyal friend. And I'm glad that you all are here to honor him. Thank you very much. [applause]
