Description: Described by the filmmaker, as a Western filtered through a post-feminist sensibility, this experimental essay was executed on an optical printer and is composed of juxtapositions and superimpositions of art postcards depicting paintings of Renaissance women, documentary images of women working in a Maine herring smokehouse and 8mm footage from John Ford's My darling Clementine. The soundtrack, a field of clashing perspectives, features the voice of W. Ryerson Johson, a 91-year-old writer of cowboy stories for pulp western magazines, who quotes from his autobiography, poetry recitations by feminist Nancy Nielson, and readings from Ryerson's works by German film theorist, Heide Schlüpmann. In its multilayered intricacy, the film raises questions regarding poetry, storytelling and visual narrative, the power of collective myths, high vs. popular art and the relationship of these to underlying gender stereotypes.
