A young black woman wants to be a ballet dancer. Her sisters and mother present obstacles to her goal. She is dependent and fearful about pursuing her career and escaping the family's poverty. She learns to deal with the setbacks in her life, ultimately strengthening her sense of autonomy.
(Interpretive note: Context of 1950s should be considered in that film appears to be made by white filmmakers, thus reflecting a certain perspective.)
