Bible On The Table (1951)

[Music] [Applause] [Music] you [Music] me morning miss Lawrence morning Johnny I didn't expect you for at least an hour really service better West Side Market spend your delivery you just put them on the breakfast table I'll be right here yeah there it is again going on the table wonder why looking for some particular package journey no and nothing in particular mr. Harmon I mean this all sounds silly to you why you always keep the Bible here Johnny a couple of years ago I'd have asked the same question but now this Bible is needed here just as much as so worried I stopped you see we use it without breakfast every morning Johnny I mean our family takes turns reading from it during our family worship family worship yes every morning after breakfast we read from the Bible and have prayer together and at first when we had no particular place to keep the Bible we found it very easy to forget our daily worship then Lois suggested a simple reminder she said lover so I don't we keep the Bible on the table well it worked ever since then with a Bible here we haven't missed a single day of family worship you mean you read and pray just like we do in church right here in the kitchen certainly every now and then we even sing a human before just talk things over tell us some recent laughing five yelling look at that you've been shocked oh no ma'am matter fact I think it's a school idea I only wish our family could do that that's couldn't you you don't know our family more do we have a hectic time at breakfast that was his morning paper she always late mom in a rush we used to have that too but now how many wish it keeps the family close together no idea about the danger I guess maybe a dozen my dad did have a fit if anyone asked him to pray at mealtime let alone read from the Bible perhaps someday the changes night with that family worship has become an essential part of our lives just his importance of going to church you know down I've been wondering are you a Christian no I guess not but I've been thinking someday I'd like to be I'm sure you will well I better get going I got another delivery tonight steal a turbine farm quick deliver that bug sometime when you bring our out of this hole Brett perhaps you can join us it's family worship yeah maybe I could borrow goodbye Johnny every morning the same ruff-ruff and laura is how about getting over here with breakfast yes coming the one day we sleep and everybody has to be up and around you better hurry Sheila you'll be late for church be in in a minute Tom we're not even shaved yet aren't you going with us don't lots of a brother I have some work I should be done but surely that work could be bad important oh mama what's so terrible about missing church once or twice I know some mighty fine people never go to church religious people too but Dad if I don't ever go to church how can it be religious that's what I'd like to know Oh for pete's sake some of the folks are delivery week doing just to be seen but Tom's are just a handful of people who do that there's so many more who are sincere the fact remains merely going to church doesn't make you a person you know maybe not but a sincere Christian will want to go mrs. Harmon said that even regular church worship isn't enough over at their house they have family worship at the breakfast table every morning let's cheer for another sysm well I wouldn't call a Hartman's fanatics dad they're mighty nice people I'm am a doctor Bartlett's saying in church that family worship is a big help to everybody he said everything I don't care what anybody said I don't eat breakfast in church I don't want church with my breakfast morning everybody morning Lord Shiva you're not even dressed oh I thought I'd skip church this morning mother what's the matter don't you feel good well I feel all right assisted I've got other things to do but Sheila that's no excuse to see Church you show mother what so terribly wrong with missing church once in a while sighs I'm tired and I want to take it easy perhaps if you came home at a decent hour you wouldn't seem so tired why is that I had to face a lecture every time I come to the breakfast table what's so terribly wrong with the things I do Sheila you're out too late last night Oh for pete's sake the way you people are always nagging me you'd think I was a criminal pass me the toast please at six cans of grapefruit juice one time to oatmeal yes ma'am your thing mr. Moore this is Harlan wants its order delivered first thing in the morning [Music] nice people the Hartman's which our family was like everything's always so peaceful in that house with that family worship has become a central part of our life Justin applause going to church sometimes when you bring our auditing progress perhaps you can join us several abortion come in Johnny morning everybody morning Johnny cabbage on Easter breakfast death both ice already had one breakfast if you have time Johnny you might like to join us and family worship well I guess maybe I could make time find Johnny fine double chair glad to have you have you been Johnny's Kevin think it's a skating rink lately well I'm sorry Tom I fixed an edit how the big bill Panthers come on swirl if we beaten Compton high this afternoon we'll be tied for first place [Music] thank you our Scripture has suggested in our devotional readings this morning is another passage from the Sermon on the mountain ask and it shall be given you seek and ye shall find knock and it shall be opened unto you for every one that asketh receiveth and he that seeketh findeth and to him that knocketh it shall be opened or what man is there of you whom if his son ask bread will he give him a stone or if he ask a fish will he give him a serpent if he then being evil know how to give good gifts unto your children how much more shall your father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him Lois will you read our devotional thought for today in the verses preceding this passage Christ has urged his disciples to be charitable but at the same time watchful in the attitudes toward the fellow man recognizing that possessing such a combination of Christian attitudes is difficult he then exhausts them to prayer but his exhortation was beyond the immediate problem and embraces prayer for all things under all circumstances emphasizing the certainty every ward to those who come to the Father for health you know it's amazing God has promised us so much still we don't you could only learn to take him at his word there's another verse I like in Philippians I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me and the one in Psalms commit thy way unto the Lord Trust also in him and he will bring it to pass honey you have a word she would end no I I guess not but now I understand what dr. Bartman teachers few expect when he talked about starting the day with family worship mrs. Harmon thank you for inviting me maybe someday we can have this at our house I'm sure you will it'll come Johnny if you want it back you can try and remember what the Bible says trust in him and he shall bring it to pass I sure hope so mrs. Harmon I've been wanting to tell you well since I started Sunday school and church regularly I've become a Christian Johnny it's indeed a wonderful morning for all of us mother will you lead out there our Father in heaven good morning we thank thee for thy wonderful love for our salvation and now Johnny's father we thank thee for this time together oh yeah that's wonderful okay see you in a few minutes I get one Gary just got me a job I started the palace next week but Sheila's surely you're not serious well why not mother it's good money it's all about the late hours and besides I don't think that uh shirring in that data is the best way for a girl to spend their time Oh mother don't be so narrow-minded now reminded I suppose we shouldn't object you're coming in at two o'clock in the morning for pete's sake stop worrying about me I can take care of myself Johnny be a good boy and do the dishes for me will ya sure sis but Sheila got your job well I know mother but my dad picked me up in ten minutes and I'm not even dressed that's okay mom I'll do it you know I mean I don't like the way you've been behaving lately well neither do i Tom but what can we do I don't know but so they all have you done I should be heading for trouble mom yes you're you kind of worried a Joshua well I don't suppose one generation can ever see eye-to-eye with the other but mom all family don't have this same trouble well take the Harmons for instance they all talk things over at the breakfast table why can't we do it why don't we have family worship every morning well you know what your father says about Church with his breakfast yeah guess he'd raise the roof but don't you think we could do it with a Bible on the table yeah what's a Bible on the table I don't know son I'm afraid there but mom maybe if she descent through a few of these family worship she well I might give us something to think about couldn't we at least try we might [Applause] work there what's this for Johnny and I've been wondering if we might start having family worship and we thought we'd start today would mean so much to us what do you say dad Oh mother you're not going to service religion with scrambled eggs every morning are you I don't think I could stand it you could stand a lot of it young lady even without the eggs what do you say dad could we do it for joy her the reading projected for today in our church bulletin is first Corinthians 13 if I sleep with the tongues of men and of angels but have not love I am become as sounding brass or a clanging cymbal and if I have the gift of prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains but have not love I am nothing and if I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and if I give my body to be burned but I have not loved it profiteth me nothing love suffereth long and is kind [Music] Johnny will you lead our prayer [Music] god we don't know how to do it but we want a real Christian home help us won't you please and help us to love you more and show us [Music] did you enjoy the service Johnny yes I sure did I liked dr. Bartlet very much and don't forget we're expecting you and your family for dinner tonight we'll be there goodbye from as I normally see mrs. Martin family worship should never be an ordeal yes I know doctor bothered but well Jonny and I we've tried to get it started but we haven't gotten very far except putting the Bible on the table you've made a fine beginning mrs. Martin but remember having the Bible on the table isn't enough the Bible isn't a charm you know it's a a chart and family worship should be quite simple I know but we have a problem could I drop in for a visit sometime next week oh I wish you would thank you so much goodbye doctor my brother's one [Music] I remember dr. Bartlett staying in church the family worshiping helping everybody he said everything I don't care what anybody says I don't eat breakfast in church I don't want church with my breakfast what's so terrible about missing church once or twice if the farmer says that even regular church worship isn't enough over their house they had family worship at the breakfast table every morning sheer fanaticism [Music] [Music] you know I'm a I don't like the way she's behaving lately neither do I talk but what can we do johnny and ivan wondering if we might start heading family worship we probably start today would mean so much to us dad what do you say what do you say then could we do it [Music] I didn't hear you come in last night with the party breakup place not too late anybody there I know sis no Johnny just a minute you there I'm all over your head with a Bible please I was awake for a long time last night thinking of many things especially how we've been drifting away from each other drifting away from the kind of life that used to bring us real peace and happiness you are right mother we all of us need more than just going to church my father it was just a short time ago that you walked out when Johnny and mother started that's true Sheila that's because I didn't realize how fast we were speeding down great just deep great Sheila now I know that you've got to put on the brakes turn around and start uphill again Tom I'm so glad this hasn't been a sudden change and it hasn't come haphazardly either quite a number of things may be realized that I've been a poor example of a man there's Johnny joining church mother wanting family worship on the other there was myself being so impatient inconsiderate me too father I know I've been terribly selfish and I'm sorry it wasn't your fault Sheila I feel it it was mine yep no it's true my parents did something for me that I have failed to do for you they gave me the benefit of a Christian home took me to church but I've ignored those things as if they were unimportant now I realize how vitally important they are I don't want to make a mint Sheila it would make me very happy if you would join us in family worship all right father so I can't find what I'm looking for but it was something like this ask and you will receive seek and you will find knock and it will be opened unto for those of us shall receive and he who seeks will find and to him that knocketh it shall be opened and then those verses many years ago it's a long time since I tried to say them I thought it was a good starting point for today [Music] it's been a long time since we call a meal as a family forgive us our shortcomings I'm trying to do better you told us to ask it will be given unto us that's what we're doing bless this family worship it isn't much we pray that you will guide us to do better each day help us to keep this bangle on the table and more than that help us to keep it in our hearts [Music]
