we drink it it tast dance because [Music] tast tast [Music] how do you do folks this is Ken Carpenter the roving television reporter speaking from the Union Station in Los Angeles California to the television facilities of w2x Hollywood today nesbet Fruit Products makers of that delicious drink nesbit's California Orange invite you to come along with us on a little travel along that will take us from Los Angeles past some interesting local spots and out into the nearby orange groves and packing plants it's a swell trip ladies and gentlemen and what better place to start from than this City's beautiful Union [Music] Station remember when we were kids uh we used to go down to the depot to see the trains come in well it's different here we get down at the Depot to see the depot yes it's a vision to see where instead of the clanging of locomotive Bells we hear soft music continuously broadcasting from hidden sources throughout the depot [Music] just a Stones Throw from the Depot in fact just across the street is a bit of old Los Angeles colorful ala Street flanked on both sides by old dwellings once occupied by early Spanish and Mexican families of this community among them several whose lands stretched further than the eye could see [Music] to the west of the little Pueblo of Los Angeles there was Rancho laa where crude oil tar and gas oozed the service from these pets came the excellent roofing for the Adobes of the p [Music] also from these pits there later came the many fossils of prehistoric animals like the sabertooth [Music] tigers but these plain hints of hidden underground riches meant little to a people who didn't even dream of a time to come that would see these thousands of Acres dotted with Wells pumping black gold and refineries that would magically transform these sticky fluids into a power that would hurdle man through the heavens at 400 mil in a single hour but they did dream of and saw the day when the mother country sent to them another kind of gold orange trees from Valencia for the Mission San Gabriel in the Foothills easterly from the Pueblo the mission fathers had established the first Orange Grove of any size to prove the adaptability of this new land to the growing of this golden fruit near the city of Riverside California the historically mined residents have the original Parent Washington Naval tree preserved and protected in this beautiful little Park beside a busy highway leading into the Heart of the City stands this tree proof of California's soil fertility and perfect climate this tree still Bears Rich Juicy [Music] Fruit through the year the sleepy little Pueblo deestro seora laa De Los Angeles grew and spread over many of the old hendes until today it's a gigantic modern city of over 2 million a Marketplace of the world famed for its aircraft its shipping its manufacturers its motion pictures and also for its Limitless City Limits the original thoroughfare ala street is dwarfed and hidden among the cador of [Music] Commerce meanwhile the surrounding ranches have become truly an orange EMP Empire for all the diversity of agriculture in California the Orange is still King from the earliest days of the history of the orange the popularity of this Delicious Fruit has spread until it is planted now wherever it will grow but of all the lands in which the orang has been planted it has thrived here in California the best not alone because of the climate the soil and the water but also because because the main goal of Growers here has been sheer quality with oranges that please oranges to attract the eye and Captivate The Taste with their Rich golden goodness which is the identification anywhere of California [Music] oranges one of the most interesting and unusual sites to be found on our television tour today is that of Grove spraying to kill insect pests right in the Bucking platform 50 to 100 ft in the air is not unlike The Crows Nest of a ship at Sea high powered Jets of this spray insecticide pour down from above and from nozzles of operators on the ground the tree is Thoroughly covered from top to bottom destroying the wouldbe Destroyers of citrus fruits the materials of warfare against insect foes are thorough and deadly no such enemy has ever even won a skirmish here [Music] we have the cleanest purest and most wholesome oranges in all the world oranges that people look for and ask for and because these things are true there has developed an appreciative World Market with a demand for Quality oranges that far transcends the dreams of the pioneer Growers and a man that is met with with 50 million boxes of these golden globules from this one area in a single year 50 million boxes of glistening Golden Globes of health and zest the best like fruit in the whole world fast and hardworking Crews carefully but swiftly remove the fruit from the trees picking a tree clean of its golden fruit in 15 minutes the production manager of nesbet Fruit Products Incorporated surveys the fruit in the Grove accompanied by the beverage division [Music] manager this young picker quickly fills his picking bag slung over one [Music] shoulder these bags are made with SNAP open bottom permitting easy dumping into the boxes without damage and bruising of the fruit [Music] their speed and the number of oranges these Pickers can gather from a tree in a short period of time is [Music] astonishing an unusual fact we learned today was that Valena oranges left on the tree after they've turned orange color will surprisingly revert back to their original green color yet inside the juice remains sweet in other words a Valena orange is sometimes ripe when it's green and and this is where the inspector's judgment is all important knowing when the green oranges are right wow what have we here we can see now that in this Grove not only the oranges are sweet oh so this is what the pickers of Southern California look like these two girls sure are busy picking and they look uh uh cool in those playsuits don't they what do you say girls do you like picking oranges for nbet [Music] Oh I thought so somebody picked some pretty Pickers I'd say what do you say old boy uh I get it here's one of the reasons for California's popularity a peach picking an orange with all their beauty these Pickers are efficient and hardworking girls when it's time they all pitch in and help and have a lot of fun doing it the crop in this Grove is about picked say what's all the excitement can't be dinner time can it well something's up let's follow and see oh I get it now they find they can hit your ride home on the nesbet truck as it heads back to the nesbet plant only a few miles away H you seem to be still full of pep yet it's been rather warm in the Grove today this outdoor work is healthy exercise for the girls and as the truck pulls away they have fun with our television crew as we follow them on their Journey [Music] homework Jack on the roof of the truck with his cameras out of range but the poor driver is the target for the girl's accurate aim and the driver's Target is the large modern Los Angeles plant of nesbet Fruit Products Incorporated for the oranges will be processed to prepare their luscious goodness for distribution of the whole country the driver backs the huge trailer up to the tip ramp expertly guiding the wheels onto a narrow block of wood which raises the outside edge of the trailer so that the load is tipped towards the unloading ramp Gravity unloads the 15 Tons of fruit quickly the slopes of the runways are designed to prevent damage to the delicate skins and yet feed the Hoist to its maximum capacity government inspectors check the load very carefully to ascertain the quality of the fruit and to pass or reject the load according to whether or not it meets the high standards of government regulations the fruit enters the elevator with its endless chain hoist raising many tons of of oranges two stories to the upper bin feed at the top the oranges are gently dropped onto a system of rubber belts where they are diverted into the numerous storage bins as thousands of oranges are needed to feed the hungry reamers that remove the rich juice from the fruit bin after bin must be kept filled to bridge the gap between the trees and the machines as the oranges again move on their way a vigilant eye scans the fruit to eliminate imperfect oranges that may have been accidentally included in the load from The Grove the oranges are immersed in a sterilizing bath ensuring germfree skins a protection of fored drinkers of nesbit's orange no human hand touches the oranges from this point on slowly they move towards the end of the tank time to remain in the bath for the proper sterilization then a quick ride up the elevator a good washing and brushing removes all chemicals and Grove dust they're polished dry and then selected as to size the cleanly washed oranges enter the building conveyed on these belts that feed these six high-speed reamers the machines practically operate themselves the load of incoming oranges is seen to take two paths the large fruit to the large size reamers the smaller fruit to the small size reamer this prevents small oranges getting into a large reamer that would ream out part of the peel it's uncanny how the right amount of oranges feed into each machine by this ingenious diverting system this is the reverse side of the bank of reur showing the sterilized oranges being fed to the cutting knives the selected fruit is conveyed up to the razor sharp knife blades which neatly have the oranges so that the halves will fit the cups that hold the oranges during the juice extracting these machines are the last word in mechanical juice removing devices under the stainless steel cover each orange half or half orange gives up its burden of liquid sunshine each of the six machines extracts the juice from one box about 300 oranges per minute 1,000 gallons alog together of pure orange juice per hour helpful thirst clenching golden juice to show you the mechanism of the reamer we'll open one not operating at the moment the stainless steel cover is raised and we see the whirling cups and remers the principle of the machine is similar to the operation of your orange squeezer at home the fluted cone is pressed whirling into the open half of the orange held in the split cups above the reamer neatly and cleanly extracts the juice without crushing the bitter oils of the skin and into the pure liquid the peel is conveyed to huge storage and dump bins where trucks haul the residue to be converted to stock feed and fertilizer in this stainless steel strainer the seeds heavy pulp and fibrous materials are removed Nature has encased The Ripe Rich freshness of an orange in its peel container thus preventing oxidation that takes place when the orange is exposed to air have you ever tried squeezing orange juice in advance no matter what you put it in or where you keep it however carefully and at whatever temperature the juice will lose much of its vitamin content because it's been oxidized by contact with the air this nasit process duplicates nature in preventing loss of taste and flavor by deating or removing the air from the juice within a few seconds after it's been extracted thus it has returned to its pure State as it was before picking by gravity the juice now flows from the deaerator into the vacuum holding tanks we can't see inside these highly polished tanks called flash sterilizers but in them the juice is treated to prevent any chemical change and to kill any bacteria present our orange juice is flashed with heat to ensure stability and prevent change the foreman carefully checks the temperature control to ensure proper treatment the juice is then pumped to the large concentrator here the water is drawn off and then evaporated through these powerful vacuum condensers on the roof the laboratory of the nasat fruit products plant is one of the most modern scientific and complete labs in the orange industry under the guidance of an experienced and confident food chemist with efficient and expert assistance who Aid him in maintaining accurate control control over the quality and flavor of the Nesbit product here we see the chief chemist measuring sugar content by refraction the instrument is called a refractometer rigid tests are made throughout the entire process from the time the fruit enters the plant until bottled nesbit's orange reaches the consumer this machine automatically fixes to the bottles they distinctive NB but label the nasat label is the guarantee of a quality product like Sterling is to Silver here an automatic machine measures the exact amount needed to fill the bottles the bottled orange concentrate is packed in cartons for shipment to approved Butlers or franchise holders who must follow a strict and sanitary routine in putting up the Nesbit product this map shows the main plant location in Los Angeles and the various warehouses throughout the country Portland Oregon Kansas City Missouri Indianapolis Indiana Jersey City New Jersey and Atlanta Georgia look at those clean sparkling bottles sterile and Immaculate moving by the hundreds to the filling machines the bottles are filled by the machine on the right the capping machine is to the left thousands of bottles per day are sealed in this swirling machine notice the color of the bottles to the left they are agitated by this bewildering revolving agitator dizzily shaking the mix thoroughly as they leave observe the rich orange color of the bottles expert hands rapidly place the finished product in cartons for shipment to local retail dealers once a month samples from all bottling plants are sent to the nesbet laboratory the bottler picks samples at random from the moving line of filled and cap bottles to be sent to the nesbet plant in Los Angeles the shipments of bottled nesbet orange drink are received at the main laboratory and are tested for quality and flavor standards that must be maintained by the butler they are also tested for proper carbonation plus we've seen in today's television for the great orange industry seen the amount of care and work that's entailed in producing mixing and bottling the great health drink nesbet orange drink a bottle of smiles as you can easily see iink it tast it tast they mean that Nesbit orange drink drink n it tastes so good
