Description: Discusses how heat travels, the construction of thermometers, the relationship that exists between the three scales of thermometers in use today, and the problems encountered in the measurement of thermal energy. Illustrates the problems in measuring high and low temperatures with alcohol and mercury thermometers. Shows the use of the optical pyrometer and the gas thermometer for unusual temperature measurements. Points out the relationship between the centrigrade, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin scales. Describes heat transfer through conduction, convection, and radiation, and diagrams the radiation of electromagnetic waves.
