Balance Beam--Fundamentals

Duration: 14

Year Published: 1970

Creator: contemporary

Format: 16mm

Description: In women's gymnastics, performance on the balance beam develops grace and poise. The aim is to create the illusion of space and freedom within the narrow confines of the beam. Basic safety precautions are pointed out, with particular attention to "spotting" or giving physical help (support) to the amateur. A variety of mounts are demonstrated--forward tolls, arabesque, pivot turns, swing turns, and several dismounts. The demonstration is by Muriel Grossfield, head coach of the U.S. Olympics team.
