Bacterial Genetics: Genetic Transduction

Year Published: 1959

Creator: University Film Producers Assn

Format: 16mm

Color: B&W

Description: Describes in detail the discovery of genetic transduction (fragmentary genetic exchange) in Salmonella. Proof is given that bacteriophage is the evoking and the transferring agent for the transduction. Presents an example of a transduction experiment carried out with Salmonella. Shows that the transduced material is only a small fraction of the bacterial genome (single marker and linked transductions in Salmonella and E. coli are discussed). Cites the different mechanisms for genetic recombination in bacteria. Lecture given by Dr. J. Lederberg. Genetic series, No. 45.
