Description: Describes several methods for isolating a single bacterium, and discusses the typing of bacteria by clonal phenotype. Discusses the demonstration of the pre-adaptiveness and spontaneous nature of bacterial mutations in terms of different procedures--the fluctuation test of Luria and Delbruck, the streaking of individual colonies, and the replica plating of either separated or unseparated colonies. Depicts the use of biochemical mutants which permit the detection of very low mutation rates in bacteria. Lecture by Dr. J. Lederberg.
