Description: The stories of two events that helped to focus the nation's attention on the rights of black Americans to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are told: the 1955 lynching in Mississippi of fourteen-year-old Emmett Till and the 1955-56 Montgomery, Alabama boycott that forced the desegregation of public buses. Also shows southern race relations at mid-century and witnesses the awakening of individuals to their own courage and power. Winner of a Blue Ribbon and the 1987 Emily Award at the American Film and Video Festival, the Edward R. Murrow Brotherhood Award from B'nai B'rith, the Silver Award at the Houston International Film Festival, the 1987 Washington Monthly Journalism Award, and named Best Program and Best Documentary of the Year by the Television Critics Association.
