[Music] most of us have work to do work that helps us live more comfortably and happily together we do work that needs doing [Music] but most of the world's work is done by grownups [Music] most of the time when you see grown-ups they're working working is part of being grown-up [Music] you will grow up someday [Music] you will get a job you will be working [Music] what do you want to be when you grow up [Music] why do people work why does everybody have a career doing some kind of work [Music] people work because they enjoy doing things that are useful and people work to be able to buy the things they need for themselves and their families in every single career people earn money by working to produce goods or services that the other people need or want everyone needs food [Music] we all need clothing [Music] we need housing and we need healthcare and there are hundreds of other goods and services we want to make our lives easier and more enjoyable [Music] because people need and want so many different goods and services there are many different kinds of work to do there are many different careers to choose from people work in different places [Music] people work in different clothes [Music] some people work at night [Music] people work with different machines [Music] people work with different skills almost every career requires special skills skills which must be learned by study or practice or both but people find it very satisfying to learn about work that they like [Music] do you think you would like to learn to work with your hands and with machines you might like a construction career like this one everyone must learn some things from books and teachers but no book can give you the skill to make a cabinet as fine as this one or to know when an engine is running exactly right maybe you have heard the expression experience is the best teacher everyone learns from experience but experience is not the only way to learn some careers require a person to know a great deal of information before he can begin to work he must learn the information before he can really begin to develop his skill it means more school after high school but if you like to solve problems you might like this career [Music] some people who like to be their own boss open businesses of their own do you like to meet people there are lots of careers in which you can meet members of your community every day [Music] some people like to do work that is especially helpful to other people nothing is more important to people than good health each of these jobs is a different career but they are all needed to help take care of our health it requires a whole group of different jobs to take care of each main kind of work that the community needs the people of all communities need transportation driving a truck is an important career but we can see that it takes many other jobs in order for the truck driver to help us it takes mechanics to keep trucks running well a dispatcher tells the driver where to deliver his load secretaries and other office workers are needed to help run a trucking business but trucking is just a small part of the transportation we need we need the work of everyone who has a job with the railroads we need the work of transporting things by ship there are many different careers that provide us with air transportation [Music] because each main kind of work has so many different careers we can call each main type of work a career cluster [Music] construction is a main kind of work engineers draftsman surveyors carpenters and many others have careers in construction because it takes many different jobs to build the new houses factories and businesses we need construction is a career cluster [Music] Manufacturing is another main kind of work to manufacture the things we need it takes hundreds and hundreds of different kinds of jobs so manufacturing is another career cluster here are some other career clusters main kinds of work which include the thousands and thousands of different jobs it takes to produce the goods and services needed by the people of a big country like ours [Music] it is good that there are many different types of careers because different people like different types of work but no matter what kind of work they do most people are proud to do a good job because he learns new things as he works person can get more and more satisfaction as he works at his career he may lead others and earn more money too it is important to earn the money to take care of families and even if they could get along without them it is very satisfying for people to earn enough for extra things they want [Music] with so many careers to choose from how will you choose your career you have a long time to think about it you have quite a while left to decide what to be when you grow up [Music] you can't choose yet but you can look around while you are growing up [Music] you can think about it [Music] what do you want to be when you grow up [Music] hi everybody don't skip bells himer welcome to our lunchtime AV geeks lunchtime streaming show we're watching a bunch of old 16-millimeter films from the a/v geeks collection we have over 27,000 and I think three giant boxes are showing up today so that's exciting one of the films that I showed a couple of weeks ago a couple of months ago probably at this point it's called movies movie makers movie it was by a company that made commercials and industrial shorts and somebody from that company who had since retired and the company doesn't exist anymore said hey I have a bunch of these films you want him so he shipped them to me so that is what I will probably spend some of my coffee money on is paying for the shipping reimbursing him for the shipping because it was he shifted the cheapest way but it was still like 70 bucks so but also I will use some of it for coffee so thanks everybody in the past for a donating a little bit of coffee here and there it actually has gone a long way and this week I think we're actually gonna set up the shelves that you guys helped pay for so thank you for that as well so it's not all about the money though although that last film kind of tells kids that yes when you grow up it is all about the money it's about what you do to pay the bills and so that song is infectious so when you go to sleep tonight you'll hear that kind of lulling in the background of your head this next film is part of that series friends not the 90s TV show but the 70s short TV show that they would show between commercials for cereal and toys and cartoons that were essentially commercials for cereals and toys this is friends you get to see the life of a kid in different parts of the country and this is Mauro Bay California so here's friends hi I'm Kelly Hansen let's be friends I live three blocks from the Pacific Ocean I live in the western part of the United States in the state of California this is my house and the ocean is right at the end of my street that's my friend's older brother he's importing he's going to teach us how to do it [Music] it's hard to keep your balance but it's still a lot of fun I live in the western part of California in the town of Morro Bay Morro Bay was discovered in 1542 by the Spanish explorer juan Rodriguez Cabrillo he also discovered San Diego and Los Angeles he named this rock morale which in Spanish means a crown shaped Hill Morro Bay is a bird sanctuary you can see over 100 different birds here [Music] and pretty wild flowers grow everywhere [Music] well they have a natural harbour fishing is important here many boats fish for abalone divers picked the abalone off the bottom of the ocean abalone is processed here [Music] a bologna tastes great everyone likes to dig for clams in war babe [Music] if his mother sand crab see all the eggs she's carrying living by the ocean is fun [Music] you sorry that ended quicker than I thought um yeah so it's an interesting series it kind of looks at a we've gone to Philadelphia we've been to Atlanta can't remember where else let's look real quick I'll share this spreadsheet with you so you can see what we've seen so far Atlanta Philadelphia Pennsylvania Dutch country Dallas so yeah there you go I have a couple more in that series as well that will watch what I want to show next I'm a lot of really good choices here thanks to having ham for donating some coffee to the cause coffee makes the world go round there we go I wish I had some coffee some actual I have a couple of films about coffee so maybe at some point we'll we'll bust some of those out this film is how to survive in your kitchen enjoy [Music] ah you know those days when nothing goes right your kitchen is a jungle with every appliance and utensil helped to attack you but it's not my fault look at it my way I am a kitchen I should know when I'm alone here it's really quite safe it's people who caused the problems you come in here angry or depressed nothing to eat or more interested in your own life than in me it's at times like these that you hurt yourself or just make a mess you can't avoid your kitchen but you can learn how not to kill yourself while you make dinner now I have four suggestions that will help and they all come from experience number one use common sense with electrical appliances most people have common sense but sometimes a bad mood causes you to lose it clean up your rig oh you're so sloppy when will you ever learn to be neat stupid come in Sally boys today that's moisture yeah okay if I don't get fifth period Jim I'm gonna throw up and die they know I won't modern dance and they gave me cooking I don't even want cooking it's not even close hey are you trying to kill someone in here what do you mean well that octopus set up over there where you've got three appliances plugged into the same outlet that's pulling a lot of electricity you know you either blow a fuse or start a fire you could burn the whole house down I guess I just haven't been thinking too much about electricity today doesn't look like you're thinking too much about your cheese sandwich either Oh gross the cheese is all stuck in the wire I have to clean the whole thing out no don't step it knife in there Peggy unplug it first or turn it off use that with a spoon that way I won't conduct electricity okay I guess I better not die before I eat you see Peggy's bad mood ruined her common sense and her cheese sandwich she was upset and careless and forgot some of the basic things we all know about electrical appliances don't overload outlets with octopus plugs be sure to turn appliances off before putting hands or objects inside and remember you can conduct electricity just like a wire if your hands or feet are wet you make an even better conductor hmm unless you want to shorten your life don't touch electrical appliances when you're wet okay my second suggestion is organize for safety how come I never get chosen for anything even a swim team there's a knife in this mess you can never find anything in this house when you want it well like Peggy Michaels mood was certainly part of the problem but the lack of organization was really what caused this accident according to National Safety Council statistics knives cause more serious accidents than any other kitchen equipment serious means requiring treatment in a hospital probably in the emergency room we've got to do something about this look more is a dangerous mess you're right I mean you can't find anything here without sticking your hand in that's what happened what I did Michael I mean well I mean at least at least the knives should be put in a separate section okay all right over here this is where this happened this sink is just like the drawer only under water you know sometimes sometimes I think John's lives in here Peggy come here young lady quickly come here conference time all right from now on what we're going to do is we're going to take the knives and put them on the counter instead of in the dirty dishwater all right and also we're gonna compartmentalize the drawer no more just throwing things in are you agreed okay yes yes peg cutting away from your hand is a lot safer Mike I've seen lots of people cut this way let's see how good you can do it and you're certainly gonna better handle a knife the wrong way to sound like one of those movies I saw in home and last week yeah well those movies just happen to be right now let me show you how to do this okay you don't point the knife at would you please listen to me you don't point the knife at anybody else or yourself you'll hold it down on the cutting board and you cut away from yourself okay towards the cutting board away from yourself away pay attention to what you're doing that's my suggestion number three hey you're probably thinking boy is that obvious yeah you're right it is obvious until you forget to do it the other night Peggy and Michael were so busy with their own lives that they forgot to pay attention to the dinner they were cooking you know I got fit period PE now I can have modern down yeah well now we'll both be stars Lakers nice shot superstar you're the one that shouldn't throw the stupid towel yeah well you should if there was no reason to be throwing that towel peg what I think something is on fire yeah no I'm serious where's the baking soda I got it I bet an electric stove would be safer than this old rep I doubt it grease catches fire because it's too hot not because of a gas flame and these two cooks just weren't paying much attention they were lucky nothing more serious happened they were all so lucky that they knew to put a grease fire out with baking soda and not with water this grease fire was started by the hot grease spattering against the gas flames or electric filaments if this were an electric stove and igniting from the direct heat when grease gets too hot it not only spatters it also smokes the smoke is really grease and gas form it's heavier than air so it doesn't rise too high out of the pan before it rolls back down over the edges and comes in contact with the heat source when this happens the fuels can ignite and cause the whole pan to burst into flames if you try to put out the fire with water the water hits the grease oils and spatters water and burning grease all over the place when you're cooking with greasy foods you have to pay attention if you see your smell smoke turn down or turn off the heat it's also a good idea to have a home fire extinguisher in your kitchen you can buy one at just about any hardware store and check it periodically to make sure the indicator on the pressure gauge is in the green or safe range oh it looks delicious like it look you saved the kitchen huh we eat out tonight so far I've given you three suggestions the one thing we haven't talked about is food store food properly think how I feel spending day after day with wilted lettuce and sour milk that's why a lot of foods have expiration dates on the package although some may be hard to find even foods with preservatives won't last forever some foods spoil very easily for example dairy products like eggs milk butter cheese's and yogurt also foods made from dairy products like puddings whipped cream cream pastries and gravies made with milk and butter fresh chicken pork and fish all spoil very quickly if not refrigerated foods made with eggs like egg or potato salad should be kept cold anything made from eggs and oil like mayonnaise spoils very fast when it's warm so throw away your old leftover sandwiches made with mayonnaise and don't take chances with old potato salads here try this oh when did you buy this for glasses enter in the Yaak contest says March on here it's me what are you trying to do poison us we see that oh here's some pudding yeah Michaelmas left it out last night you know he never learned that things made with milk need to be refrigerated or they go bad real fast yeah and who left this artichoke in here in the fridge for over two weeks Peggy hey just because it's kept cold doesn't mean that mold won't grow it just grows more slowly don't you guys ever clean out your refrigerator while food is being cooked bacteria and mold won't grow as soon as the temperature drops below 250 degrees Fahrenheit bacteria and mold began to develop leaving food out over two hours at room temperature is not a good idea refrigerating cooked raw or processed food slows the growth of bacteria but doesn't stop it entirely that's why we need expiration dates and a good refrigerator cleaning every once in a while so remember keep it hot above 250 degrees Fahrenheit keep it cold below 40 degrees you might want to use a thermometer to check your refrigerator but don't keep it too long watch those expiration dates well that's all of them my four suggestions to help you and your kitchen survive together use common sense with electrical appliances you too can conduct electricity organize your kitchen for safety especially knives and sharp tools pay attention to what you're doing and store food properly often food can look smell or even taste all right but still be bad I think I'll post these on the wall for my family you know if they don't shape up soon I'm going to resign as a kitchen and become something safe like a closet [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so instead of being a kitchen he wants to be a closet um yeah those uh so there's a another film I showed earlier which was earlier being weeks ago months ago which was what was the name of it it's a very very similar concept it's a cooking kitchen safety made the 50s and it's a woman is in the hospital bed and we get to see why she was in the hospital bed um hey I should say this uh we're getting pretty close to 500 here pretty close let's celebrate by learning how alcohol is really is dynamite and I think the filmmaker well Sid Davis isn't saying dynamite and a positive play in like this alcohol is dynamite it's like there's alcohol like dynamite so here we go thanks to Davis I guess you've seen that sign enough tens haven't you any bar or glove that sells liquor by the drink or any retail store averages is sure to have it in the proper place but and Jack went in to buy a case of beer for a picnic and right now they think it's pretty unfair that they can't walk into a store like anyone else and buy liquor just because they're underage oh that's me incidentally Tom Oldman I'm a sports reporter on the city paper the boys want me to take their money and buy their drinks for them No Deal maybe it'd be a good idea if I told them a little something about why that sign is in the window and why they should be glad it is there or anybody who fools around with this adult or minor is playing with dynamite I decided to tell these boys about Paul Jim and Tim I guess you could say Paul started it all but it wasn't all his fault actually you see he was just too good a musician for his age he played in dad's bands with older fellows and they taught him things he'd be better off not knowing [Music] Jim had the richest father in town and tip well tit was captain of the basketball team Allstate the year before they saw something funny in the way their friend Paul was acting as soon as he joined them according to Paul it's no fun drinking alone he wants company the other boys have never tasted liquor before so they have to be dared into it that first drink isn't very enjoyable I can tell you it burns your insides and it makes your eyes water tip refused the drink he said he was in training and basketball meant too much to him but that isn't good enough for his friends he has to be a sport you'd be surprised at how little it takes to get you tight that first time that's true with adults but at high school age even though your mind seems mature your body isn't an alcohol is a vial of narcotic [Music] ever wonder what alcohol does to the human body aside from making the owner of it act like this well let's take Paul as an example since he started all this anyway anthropologists say that what distinguishes man from the lower animals is his power of reason a power found in the portion of the brain called the frontal lobes well when a drop of alcohol gets in the blood that's right where it hits for the frontal lobes almost as if its aim in life was to transform man back into an animal to take away the reasoning powers and self controls or to use a highbrow word inhibitions that make that human society possible what would happen if the bottle weren't empty if the boys could go on drinking well alcohol doesn't stop after knocking out the frontal lobes it starts in on the whole nervous system and eventually effects every function of the body how much alcohol does this take well suppose there are three or four drops of alcohol for every thousand drops of blood then the drinker looks like this only half-conscious hardly able to stagger hard to breathe if he keeps on drinking and the concentration reaches four to five drops he ends up like this and that's fortunate in a way because if he was able to lift his hand for another drink the Undertaker would have another customer you see all it takes is five drops of alcohol for every thousand drops of blood 1/2 of 1% and brother you're a dead duck well that first night was the start Paul Jim and tip took to drinking together Jim's father gave him plenty of money and Jim kept them in liquor [Music] fortunately a patrol car spotted Jim going through a stop sign and he is picked up on suspicion of drunk driving [Music] Jim's father was summoned to the station and because this was Jim's first offense was successful in having Jim released following a severe warning in the meantime tips playing went from bad to worse and then came a day the tip would like to forget but one he'll remember all his life he was kicked off the basketball team but his two good friends were there to console him and they were sure a drink would make him feel better well the alcohol story usually runs to a pattern the boys were drinking more and more depending on liquor to get them through the day even dates were no fun anymore without a bottle [Music] naturally what the waiter is doing is reminding that he has a sign in his front window - we do not serve liquor to minors but Kim had thought of that [Music] jim's date judy had never tasted liquor before but like dope addicts one drinker can't stand the sight of somebody not drinking and soon Judy catches the spirit of the thing [Music] the waiter has a right to be sore they'll give the club a bad name he says and he boots them all out he wants to keep his license [Music] the boys can't understand Judy only two drinks and look at it but it's really very simple tolerance for alcohol varies from person to person Judy is one of those on whom it acts like a deadly poison [Music] and someone who has never used it before the effect is a lot more violent Jim himself is a no shape to drive right now he wishes he'd taken just one less drink [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] there's the result just another victim of a drunk driver one of the estimated ten to twenty thousand last year alone [Music] Jim failed a few tests in high school after he started drinking but he never failed a test as serious as this one [Music] Jim went to jail with plenty of time to think well what happened to the three boys after the accident Paul was almost a complete alcoholic for a while but then he became one of the youngest members of Alcoholics Anonymous and now he has a chance to save himself Jim never got over that accident when he got out of jail he went back to drinking and ended up on Skid Row a hopeless derelict tip the third boy realized at the scene of the accident that he was playing in the wrong lead right then he made a vow never to touch a drop of liquor again and he hasn't how do I know because tip is my son why did Americans in one year spend two billion dollars more for liquor than for all education that's a tough one to answer when a man can't or thinks he can't measure up he looks for a crutch something to help him he takes a drink alcohol dedenne's the part of the brain that holds his worries and responsibilities and he thinks it's helping him but instead of helping him every drink gives him that much less chance of ever being able to get along and his crutch ends up by destroying him now if a mature adult admits his failure as a man a woman by resorting to alcohol what about the boy or girl who never gives himself a chance to learn to adjust without liquor he's licked before he starts so that's why you see that sign in the window and that's why a boy and girl should be glad that somebody put it there because alcohol is dynamite [Music] you oh yeah classic Sid Davis you know those tropes are of course one there's not there's narration there's not sync sound because that's a budget thing and the headlines the illustrations are of a time because they show up in other films about being a pedestrian and other things like that and of course the spiral of the characters into peril which some survived but some don't it's classic Sid Davis all right this next film is part of that series inside out which was something which made in the 70s early 70s and was shown on public television and actually shown in schools and it's one of these series that deal with emotional aspects of being a kid and the films are mostly open-ended and this one is I've been saving this one this is not my most favorite but it's close it's up there and this is one that I I remember seeing as a kid night it was home sick watching one of the four channels that we got on our little black-and-white television and I remember seeing this and was struck by them and kind of kind of haunted by it it's about bullying it's just really fascinating and it's revenge a revenge film so and we saw another revenge film couple actually by them getting even and of course just joking which is classic revenge it's so good anyways here's the bully the following is from a national instructional television series the series and related materials were developed and supported by 32 educational agencies with additional support from Exxon corporation [Music] I want to see all of you doing this okay Shelly and Adrian are you ready but 18.04 plus eleven point one three okay I want to see the rest of you doing this problem too don't look with additional support from Exxon corporation this program was produced by ket C st. Louis Missouri under the supervision of NIT national instructional television such a great film it's filled with so many moral issues for a little kid to kind of think about and I certainly you know all of us probably have been bullied at some point in our school careers and to think about that revenge and then what to do over the top wonderful so like I said it still resonates in my subconscious thank you Kevin for the coffee donation very much appreciated so I would say that you know we've seen up to 500 films we're a little bit over but there's been some duplication so back and forth so roughly we've seen 500 films and have a ham said hey can we watch some TV ads so I don't normally do requests but I just happen to have some handy so let's watch some TV ends their recent Basterds Mustangs the competitions game tenors fast ones burnt out Ali it's a mini racing scene the first heats donned a little Lou but Fred thinks he's got a winner too both with one-of-a-kind fast ones place looks like Fred's the winner now they'll have to settle this somehow burnt-out alley bar Blake believe drag racing five fast ones burnout alley comes with two fast ones Mustangs you have to put it together new from Kenner I've waited a long time for this Luke Skywalker ready Darth Vader introducing Bespin world new from Star Wars Micro collection line 16 diecast figures and action poses included it's three playsets in one how can a gantry the best Ben control room watch what happens to Lou bespin world from Star Wars Micro collection line playsets also sold separately figures included new from Kenner it's at the old terrain armored transport from Kenner batteries not included action figures each sold separately you can make a catwalk you could make out adds legs quite some obstacles you can move at its head and pretend to scan for rebels and it has a cockpit for Imperial commander and a head driver and laser machine guns when you push a button to fire the laser cannons you activate battle lights and sounds there's even a troop compartment from Kenner Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back collection ocean cruise ships three decks with movable furniture where you can play with Shara in romantic Rhodes and Aaron in fancy fiestas each sold separately an elevator that really works and a removable lifeboat [Music] glamour gals ocean queen cruise ship comes with everything you see here it's all sold separately new from Kenner Indy over here Indiana Jones at your service don't Indiana Jones and other action figures new from Raiders of the Lost Ark collection each sold separately [Music] Indiana Jones tote and Kyra Schwartzman action figures each sold separately from Raiders of the Lost Ark collection new from Kenner it's Star Wars Micro collection line with Death Star world pop world has been one of the vehicles each sold separately here are 6 diecast rebel soldiers and stormtroopers not available in stores you can get them free for 2 person purchase from any places or vehicles in the Star Wars Micro collection line details on specially marked packages in participating stores or French January 31st 1983 -
