AV Geeks Lunch 7-13

[Music] uh [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] all right there we are of course it's our 400th show at av geeks uh our lunchtime streaming show so of course um i've you know i have to show 200 twice at the same time to add up to 400 i don't have a film called 400 otherwise i would have shown that um and for you uh tech heads out there i did slow down one of the films just a little bit so we could have some interesting phasing um with the audio so there you go um so today's a special show um yes people have identified who these people are so my partner katrina my nephew nate um nate has been uh working with me for the last a couple of weeks scanning some films that we've been watching actually from the coronet collection he also inadvertently came up with a logo for the av geeks lunch that i'm gonna make into a sticker so nate tell me how did this come about why did you doodle this and why did i and i discovered it yesterday so why did you doodle it well it's a funny story i uh just forgot my headphones you forgot your headphones and you were just bored i was just very bored so yeah here it is this is what that sticker is going to be um i did not prompt him to do this i did prompt him to put avgeeks.com on there and for him to sign it but yes um some sort of filmy av geeks creature eating film but his teeth are also film and he's going um 16 millimeter and what i like is also that's three m's and then 60 millimeter has two m's there's there's a lot that i really just i got very excited when i saw that and so uh the stickers won't come until towards the end of the week but what we're doing is um if you email us at skip avgeeks.com with your mailing address we will send you a sticker um we'll also enter you in for various prizes that we'll be drawing for throughout the show tonight today's show is i'm going to pick two of my favorite films that have songs uh i've shown them in the past but they just are so great obviously um so go ahead and get the the gifts are right there the prizes so we've got some this is a very uh well let's do this one first yeah so this is the shirt that we had printed especially uh last year um it's a av geeks logo done by um dear friend dear departed friend jason polin um we have various sizes of them this one we have limited sizes in but you know we'll make do this was the special jerseys that we had printed up for the av geeks and found footage festival a tournament toe tapping tournament where we whooped their butts and then finally an actual 16 millimeter film whoa we will do a drawing and we will mail you an actual 16 millimeter film of my choice i'll try not to send you anything that's vinegar i'll try to send you something that's uh um a little bit better shape uh but uh thank you so much for tuning in for all this this has been really a special i mean it's been what caused it to happen was not great it was horrible but i think this is uh finding a silver lining in a very very dark cloud so thank you for being there uh with us um it's been great for me to be able to share my collection um you know traditionally i was doing like two or three shows a month um live and this gives me the ability to show it to folks all around the world and that makes me feel really great all right so we're going to get started with this first film which i showed back in june of last year um and i really want to show it again it's one of my favorite films it's uh made in the 70s by atnt and it teaches you how to use the telephone i mentioned this before with how to use the telephone which i showed a couple of days ago um but uh this is musically done with uh nightmarish uh costumes uh basically the the gist of this is still children get uh stolen by a little man-child and taken in use in our country today there's the typical business phone there's one like that in the office where my mother works there's a wall telephone we have one like that in our kitchen wall the trim line phone my hand has one like that and there's several others each have the same kind of parts a mouthpiece to talk into an earpiece we're listening a round dial or push button so that you can get the number you want wires and circuits and a bell inside they make the telephone work and a case to hold it all now on the case there's a cradle so that you can rest the handset when it's not in use it's very important the phone handset always be in its cradle when it's not being used or else your friends will not be able to call you why are telephones in different colors what do the colors mean they're just pretty colors to match the colors of your house but regardless of the color they all work the same way are we gonna use the telephone while we're in calizonia yeah certainly come on let's do that right now [Music] how many of you would like to become full-fledged citizens of telezonia raise your hands yeah here's the first requirement you must know how to answer the telephone properly who knows just how that stuff come on come on speak up speak up the phone's ringing it should be answered do we have some questions here and do we need some answers how do you answer the phone is that a good question or is it not let me see if i can answer it for you pick up the phone as soon [Music] how can you do it pick up the phone as soon as it rings speak out your name do you want to be next [Music] [Music] would you like to be next [Music] joe joe look what you've done that's not the right way to answer all right hello this is joe way to go joe don't forget if there's a telephone number for someone to call be sure to write it down can you remember to write it down can you remember to write it down you remember to run it down and can you remember to write it down [Music] over here everybody i want to show you something now this is just like the dial on the telephone except of course it's very much larger and all the numbers and letters are mixed up but i'm going to ask you to put them all in the right places and you can use this phone right here as a guide but what for i knew you'd ask it's like this you have to know your letters and your numbers up to nine to call a friend who's at the other end of the line [Music] you have to know your numbers and your letters from a to z to use the telephone and the telephone directory [Music] you have to know your letters and says [Music] [Music] what's the matter folks got some left over yeah i got two out of the two cmos and i got two eyes joe your o's are different now this round letter o was right here after the end and that tall number zero for operator was right here after the nine be sure you remember the difference and lisa that number one goes right in the first circle and that i goes right after what hey right hey huh i don't think telephone company is very smart he doesn't even know the alphabet some of the letters are missing missing there are letters missing well how do you know i've counted there's only 24 yeah well who knows what letters are missing dude there's no qbt in the t and the i and the z is in here at the end like you and say you're missing all right we're not missing we're just not on the dial but we're in the telephone directory and you'll use this in a while [Music] here are all the country's telephone directories telephone books we call them almost every telephone number is listed here if you want to call anyone at all just look up the number in the book for the city where the person lives now here's how to find a name listen closely all the names are always listed in order like the alphabet now if the last name begins with the letter a like uh adams anderson atkins and so on where you'd find it in front of the book it would then be followed by those names beginning with the letter b and then all the c's all the d's and so on through the alphabet right okay now which name would come first in the book smith and would you find wallace towards the back of the white pages or the front back good now listen closely all of the names that start with the same letter like adams anderson atkins for example are found in the a section but to know exactly how to get there you gotta know the second letter in each name a d adams comes before a.n anderson a.n anderson comes before a t atkins well what about people like baker and bass they both start with ba right paul and how do you decide which is first go to the next letter i guess good b.a.k baker comes before b.a.t bates because because k comes for a t in the alphabet right simple isn't it you've just learned how to find names and words alphabetically it works the same in the telephone book and in the dictionary and in the encyclopedia and in lots of other books come on [Music] wait a minute here's two names exactly the same john mason john mason do they live at the same place no one is on elm street the other is on river road well that's how you know they're not the same now when you look up a name in the phone book make sure you know too where the person lives in the front of every phone book is lots of useful information how to call the sheriff the fire department the police what number to call to have your phone repaired and how much it costs to call outside your city but how do i find the name of my school well schools are usually listed first by the name of your city or county and then alphabetically by name look some of these pages are yellow in the yellow pages the telephone numbers are listed according to various businesses you can find accountants barbers ice cream makers movie theaters plumbers toy stores any business with a phone they're listed alphabetically by business in the yellow pages take your time practice looking up friends or people you or your parents know in business write down their numbers and keep a list of the ones you use most often hey here's ellen greenberg's number she lives down the street from me on new part i know her father's name's albert what's her number five five five oh nine two six can i call it we wanted to go on a picnic that's right we want to call our friends okay i think i found sandy's milk and i want to call home okay then let's go hey kids over here i'll show you something we are definitely positively absolutely going to learn to make a call right now pick up the handset that's the first part list for the tone and then start put your finger in the circle of the number you need turn the dial to the right with a little bit of speed turn the dial to the right till your fingers go some more take your finger out it'll go to where it was before and when you finished all the numbers you'll hear it ring that's how you do the teleport thing okay you first got your number make your call i'd be sure to wait for at least 10 rings for someone to answer me before you hang up of course use this phone with a touch tone dial it's easy instead of a round dial there are buttons just push each button in turn let's try pick up and set that's the first part that's for the tone and then start push the button down with the number you want for the button by the letter that's the busy signal it means somebody else is using the line hang up wait a while and try again meanwhile you use this instrument here it's a pay phone got any coins in your pocket give it a try need some help young fella here's a couple of coins so you can make your call this is a public telephone that you have to pay to use like paying admission to the movie it's not like a vending machine you don't get any change back you must have the right coins lift the handset drop the coins right into the slot listen for the tone before you start put your finger in the circle of the number [Music] you'll hear it rain [Music] hi fanny this or see watch youtube videos while he was scanning and he drew this out of sheer boredom and it just happened that it was an amazing way to uh an amazing logo for the av geeks lunch show so glorious um have a projector i don't care maybe this is your opportunity to get a projector and then you can start on this wonderful horrible hobby obsession that i do not recommend that you do because i basically have i'm paying a mortgage on a house that is just for the hobby it's not a lot for the mortgage it's cheaper than storage but it kind of got out of control so don't encourage me it's dangerous uh speaking of danger uh i've shown the a little short song that was a uh reworking of this film but i figured i'd need to show the entire film um this is uh so great it's again another um film that has a great song and this of course the song won the toe tapping tournament and we had the jim stringer the guy who actually wrote the music um and uh this is just so good it's good because it was um they knew their audience and it's still being shown today um they know their audience is gets lazy gets bored comes in hungover um and there's humor there's a little bit of fake gore in this but it's really glorious this is shake hands with danger this is your focus leader adjust the focus until the picture is sharp now adjust the sound to a normal volume i can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything okay [Music] hey get down from there now hey turn it over what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be mincemeat by now what have i told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well i told them not to touch anything all right i guess i wasn't thinking you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not thinking your own personal safety here shake hands with danger shake hands with danger need a guy who ought to know i used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger joe [Music] shake hands with danger find it anywhere you choose be careless for a moment spend a lifetime with the blues [Music] earth moving machines are designed for safety but they're big enough to hide a man just about dead you could have killed me this mechanic is lucky he's able to complain he should have protected himself by removing the key and putting a do not operate tag on the controls anytime you pick up a wrench reach for a control use a grease gun grab a welding torch or work on any machine while forgetting safety you're shaking hands with danger all right okay okay all right now you take the loader up behind the hill where they're working now i'll drive up on the road and i'll meet you at the top all right okay uh but you know cliff i never operated this model before well all right all i have to do is back it up and then let it down nice and easy like you you want me to do it ah i can handle there's no sweat there we can take care okay all right i'll see you later [Music] [Music] [Music] what this man didn't know was that the operator had left the lift lever in the raised position so the arms would rise automatically when the engine started a qualified operator would have known better the man shouldn't have tried to perform as an operator when he wasn't one all right well you weren't kidding you said you didn't know how to run this thing [Music] chuck hamlin is no beginner before he begins changing an o-ring on an excavator boom he checks oil temperature down engine off bucket grounded hydraulic lock engaged okay you'll have that o-ring installed in minutes [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Laughter] shake hands with danger take a chance that you won't fall you'll save yourself a minute but you may damn well lose it all [Music] wherever possible the stick should be extended and the boom lowered so the work can be done at ground level finding that impossible the next man used the service truck as a safe work platform climbing with tools can create a hazard use the steps and the grab irons keep at least three points of contact two feet and one hand unencumbered any shortcuts and you're inviting injury in fact taking shortcuts is often a quick road to trouble for example consider what happened to harry sanders harry has come to work with a problem his son is having a football injured knee operated on this morning harry wants to finish this job and take a couple hours off to visit his son the operator has complained that the scraper is shifting too slow and the controls are sluggish in a hurry harry pulls only one axle the service manual says to pull both axles and disconnect steering but harry knows with one axle removed and the differential unlocked the machine shouldn't move he's taken a shortcut before while waiting for the operator to return harry starts the machine in order to judge the problem while he waits for the engine to warm harry's thoughts drift to worries about his son the accelerator feels stiff so then he checks the feel of the service brakes his attention is divided while thinking about his son his hands and feet go through motions he believes have become automatic in this absent-minded state he unconsciously starts to steer jams his foot on the differential lock and the machine takes off [Music] lucky for the stunned operator the machine stops itself harry is only bruised but in a crowded area he could have killed someone because he ignored safe procedure to save a few minutes work now most people have days when they come to work with worries hangovers or distractions those are times for being doubly cautious when the body's on the job but the mind is elsewhere it's danger time glenn greenwood was victim of another kind of mental hazard eagle how you doing hot shot that's stuck in there tight did you get that pin driver nobody got this drift just give it a whack glenn knows the risk of striking hard against badly chipped metal but he's wearing safety glasses and there's a macho thing involved here glenn doesn't want his friend to sneer at him for being overly cautious so glenn shakes hands with danger [Music] maybe his friend would have laughed if granted insisted upon playing it safe but he sure as hell isn't laughing now with tools the time to make sure you have a safe ending is before you start using them they should be the right tools for the job and in safe condition if glenn's friend had ground off that mushroomed face taking care of the tools he uses he could have prevented that accident some old-timers think accidents happen only to greenhorn i got a brack on you want to come take a look at it let them learn the hard way they say i'll let them learn the hard way can be an attitude that results in a serious injury sorry about that one word of caution from the old timer would have saved a lot of pain and lost work time and even the old timer can lapse into carelessness the safety gap is correct when he starts but he doesn't think about how much he's grinding down the wheel [Music] he gets by with it on that longer piece fingers aren't the only things to think about when working with track due to the mechanics failure to restrain the track before he unloosened it at a high point here they're about to push a high sprocketed machine from an old set of tracks onto a new set with both tracks removed the machine is free to roll on a slight grade it may just take off if they'd had an operator in the machine he could have stopped it by dropping the ripper or blade they should have planned proper blocking and restraint but better still they should change one track at a time then there can't be a roll away hurry and failure to heed safety warnings can also endanger those due in routine maintenance despite constant warnings about hot oil and pressure systems some optimist always thinks he can get his hand away in time oh my god somebody help me needn't have happened the temperature gauges pressure gauges and the safety caps on cooling systems are there to prevent accidents from occurring the people who shake hands with danger are those who don't learn beforehand what they're getting into like the owner whose brake rotor chamber has been losing air pressure hey spam there we go i got the brake chamber off the loader i gotta run into the dealers to get some repair parts while i'm gone will you take it apart to save us some time okay bill at this point the service manuals call for the insertion of a threaded tool to hold the spring force sam hasn't read the manual he doesn't know he's releasing a force that might be as high as 750 pounds whether you're working on anything from nitrogen accumulators to inflated tires it pays to know the kind of power you're dealing with beforehand [Music] warnings about gasoline are as old as use of the fuel yet somewhere somebody is always deciding it won't hurt to use it as a cleaning fluid just this one time oh he'll empty the pan very carefully but just as soon as he finds a rag to wipe off the carburetor meanwhile the fuel keeps vaporizing i've only got about another hour to go on this thing i got to get that big warts over there now i'll it's possible to become over confident about handling dangerous materials a good reason why safety instructions should be repeated at frequent intervals oddly enough it isn't lack of familiarity with the job that causes most accidents often it's the routineness of the work that makes a person overconfident now bill myers is changing buckets a job he's done at least a hundred times if he were new at it bill would be watching and thinking about every step now it's so routine that caution has been dulled the hole is dry the pin won't slide in there's no stick or swab in the grease can but he could surely find one if he took the time to search around this is the moment that split second when a man decides between being safe or shaking hands with danger if he couldn't find a stick or a swab bill could have had the linking members moved apart and greased them separately it would have been a nuisance but bill myers would give anything to be able to go back and do it the right way hey ernie yeah i got this hose off the dozer blade here why don't you put this bolt in that input i'm going to take this into the shelf all right i'll get it done he should have blocked both push arms and he should never have relied upon anything as unstable or crushable as building blocks improper blocking and failure to block are major causes of crushing accidents we're dealing with enormous weight and we should never depend upon hydraulics alone to hold it up i'll show you something back here [Music] ted the position this truck bed was in without these locking pins in and you're working underneath the truck bed and it had failed you'd have had it so these pins should be in place as such now it's always important to look out for the other guy safety is always in the hands of people on the job the warnings and cautions are there for those who heed them [Music] safety procedures are spelled out and illustrated in lubrication and maintenance guides operators guides and service manuals the protection is there in machine design and safety devices [Music] emphasizing knowledge and awareness prevents accidents by encouraging safety consciousness and protective clothing helps shield a body from the unexpected the human element remains it can lend itself to safety or turn a routine situation into a dangerous one hey bob i gotta get this out of here that engine's not running i don't care if it's strong or not you see them trucks and trucks gotta come through here i want this out of here right now and we all know that the serviceman doesn't always work under ideal conditions mechanic bob murray is an excavator with a dead engine it won't start which means the brakes are locked which means it's going to sit right here until bob disconnects the final drives then he'll have a machine he can move [Music] what he should also have but doesn't is a second vehicle to provide breaking [Music] shake hands with danger hurry up and get it done it takes two men to move this thing but i'll make do with one [Music] now bob isn't dumb he wouldn't try towing it all the way to the shop without help but he just wants to drag it a hundred yards or so and get that foreman off his back [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] bob murray will never again tow a freewheeling machine without having control over the breaking now bob was lucky others were not shake hands with danger shake hands with danger shake hands with danger morning i was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless and fed my skin into the queen shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me three fingers [Music] i've seen mechanics burning and i've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute i've seen them lose it all i've watched them caught in trouble seen them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the blues [Music] [Applause] [Music] she [Music] [Music] [Music] changed inside [Music] shake hands with danger and some friends i used to how many films does that translate to more than 1700 um let me see real quick yeah like 1760 films that's crazy um so i did a drawing for 16 millimeter films and uh rip k you get one and juliet jones you get one so that we'll ship those out later this week once we get the stickers um i should say that starting next tuesday i'm gonna take a break i'm gonna take two weeks of a break from doing the live shows now i've been pre-recording shows and those will be still on same time for lunch because i still want to continue doing this but um i think i need a little break and so i might travel a little bit i might um sleep in i might i don't know take care of some infrastructure here at the archive uh do some scanning you know any number of things but um and i might like tune in on the comments but it's it's going to be pre-recorded because um yeah i think i think i need a like a two-week thing so that's starting next tuesday so we'll still be live and everything i'll mention it but um also thank you thomas thomas has contributed so much coffee to av geeks that if i ingested all that coffee that he contributed it would give me a heart attack so we're gonna spread it out a little bit and we're also and also other folks that contributed kevin um chris um had so many uh emails with people contributing stuff that i might have lost you in the mix let me see if i can actually um send him a sticker i'm going to send him a dvd so i'll try to pick some special dvd thing um but thanks so much uh tomorrow is 401 we'll be back at one o'clock and uh we'll be watching more films that we haven't seen uh pulling films off the shelves uh busting out some new stuff um but very much appreciate uh the reason i collect these films is to show to folks to people like you and so i appreciate you being there i would probably still do this if nobody was tuning in but it wouldn't be as much fun definitely it would not be as much fun so everybody thank you again uh we look inside
