hello i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the 80 geeks lunchtime streaming show um so i watched i pulled this film uh we scanned it as part of the coronet collection and it's the not the a b roll or c roll it's the d e roll so um sometimes when you composite a film you have different levels or layers of stuff and so uh that was a lot of material um there was a lot of raw material so i don't really think it really was a corresponding abc de uh like when you're editing um but i was so excited with the content i was like why don't i show all 20 minutes of it so i appreciate your indulgence uh in that um but uh yeah we watch old 16 millimeter films and we love when the 60 millimeter films are about 16 millimeter films or about uh audio visual stuff because that's what we do av geeks um here this film is about the atomic age the paintings would be exactly although this beginning here i'm not sure what this is from an audience is possible because we felt that good contemporary american art should have as large [Music] [Applause] this is atomic energy [Music] this is the force of 20th century man a powerful force for destruction a force that may be preventing a new world war [Music] this too is atomic energy harnessed by american scientific genius to benefit all mankind through dramatic new discoveries in industry and agriculture biology and medicine ten thousand scientists and engineers are at work to prove that atomic energy does not mean only the atomic bomb [Music] the master slave manipulator at the argonne national laboratory for example makes possible important industrial research [Music] behind glass and concrete walls three feet thick the operator is protected as he removes from its lead shielded cask a container with a dangerously radioactive metal inside the manipulator imitates the human hands in grasping lifting moving and turning objects here the container is placed below a saw a switch is thrown and the saw bites into the metal [Music] intently now the scientist watches the end of the container drop off next the slave hands remove the tube and carefully shake out the radioactive metal for testing the manipulator grasps the hot material and directed by the scientist places it under a hardness tester a dial records the intensity of pressure a microscope attachment enables study for industrial purposes of the effects of radioactivity on the hardness of metals strictest security safeguards america's atomic secrets every person working on a nuclear research project is intensively screened by the atomic energy commission's protective force and in the rugged areas where even the versatile jeep cannot travel mounted patrols ring atomic energy sites at los alamos amidst the wild picturesque mountains of new mexico horses are of great value the mounted patrolmen through the use of radio are regularly in contact with protective force headquarters in los alamos should a call for help be received reinforcements could be dispatched by land or air in a matter of seconds day and night they ride alert against spies and saboteurs giant anti-aircraft guns protect the hanford washington atomic energy plant manned by carefully trained gis they guard against attack from the skies at hanford biologists study the effects of radioactivity on fish since columbia river water is pumped through the plant to safeguard washington's flourishing fish industry 25 000 trout and salmon are hatched each year and exposed to water contaminated with radioactivity this is only one example of precautions that go on endlessly in this case there is not enough radioactivity to harm the fish or persons eating them panford biologists are conducting similar experiments on sheep feeding them pellets with radioactive ingredients the paths of these substances are traced through the sheep's body these experiments could be of tremendous importance to biologists and doctors increasing their understanding of the processes of human life in the field of agriculture an isotope hothouse has been built at the argonne laboratory radioactive forms of plants are grown and examined under controlled safety conditions here a study is made of radioactive drugs which have been taken from the harvested plants these drugs which must be handled with gloves under a protective hood undergo special analysis to determine how they can be most effectively employed by doctors in medical research at the oak ridge national laboratory's medical division radioactive liquids are used by atomic energy commission doctors in the fight against cancer one of the dread diseases of mankind shielded by lead bricks this solution gallium 72 is an important tool in cancer research here a patient at oak ridge drinks an atomic cocktail of radioactive iodine in solution and then is placed on an examination table next a radiation counter with a pen attached is lowered into place the radioactivity in the drink which is settled in the patient's thyroid gland puts the pen in motion drawing a picture of a diseased area the light and dark pattern of the drawing reveals healthy and cancerous tissues a milestone in cancer research these are but a few of the countless peacetime uses of atomic energy in the years ahead the infinite power of the atom may provide the force to drive ships and planes light our homes and turn the wheels of american industry and in the fields of agriculture medicine and biology its future is unlimited with the atomic bomb american scientists unlocked the devastating might of the atom today they are engaged in the task of releasing atomic energy slowly gradually in ways of lasting benefit to a world at peace in the atomic age this is one in a series of educational news films presented as a public service by the detroit news the home newspaper [Music] um so i see that footage it shows up a lot uh there's i think there's an atoms for peace thing that was made by the u.s government that this borrowed pretty heavily from so well in a personal note i when i was a kid i actually went to oak ridge and i got to play with the hot cells um which are the robotic arms that are controlled by a person and accidentally got some radioactive grease on me in looking at a breeder reactor um so there you go good times uh this next film is um on the old telecity back there uh i don't know if you noticed my assistant decorated a little bit uh so we have i coordinate my fingers here uh av club pennant that somebody got me some time ago um the clown thanksgiving clown that was uh something found footage festival desperately wanted uh during our toe tapping tournament and they lost so they gave me a painting of a video that i found called the club um or a friend of mine found a club which is a cable access show in durham um anyways um so uh next film we're gonna watch is about cooperation competition and conflict oh no wait i was gonna show a film actually on the telescope i'm all discombined later tonight apologize so here's a double day for danny dylan enjoy wait a minute there's no audio hold on sorry something got changed give me one second please wait a minute i added it to the wrong thing um i don't know if danny i guess so that's me that's you looks like a row of tones it's an x-ray picture of your teeth this little black spot over here is the villain that's a cavity how come i have kevin i take care of my teeth sure and your mother has had you here for regular examination since you were three but cavities will develop it takes a lot of work by you and by me to prevent it i brush my teeth how often well twice a day yeah mornings when you get up and before you go to sleep but how about during the day not often well jesus do you expect me to spend the whole day in the bathroom no danny i don't but taking proper care of your teeth isn't just a few minutes in the morning and a few more at night there's nothing more important than your teeth yeah that's what my mom said like a hundred times a day i bet you there were at least a dozen times today when you could have been taking care of your teeth without interfering with anything else you wanted to do oh sure you don't think so like when i was playing baseball instead of getting up with my bet i'd use my trusty toothbrush then make a big hit it's a pretty good joke not bad for a beginner there i am with my trusty toothbrush the picture lines up here comes swoosh that's the trouble with too many children and their toothbrushes three swishers and out but i stand on what i said before i'll bet you that you missed a dozen opportunities to give your teeth the loving care they need well tell me when well think back think of everything you did today from the time you got up this morning until you walked into my office everything everything well let me think before i came in here i was out there [Music] good lunch ham sandwich ice cream [Music] [Music] my [Music] that's quite a breakfast you pack away [Music] now wait don't you see what's going to happen [Music] please i take care of my teeth [Music] [Music] well that was quite a day but look at all the chances you had to give your teeth the care they need dozens of them like one well let's see let's do the whole day over again okay i'd rather sleep my you're bright and chipper in the morning i want to go back to sleep wait a minute danny what did i do now it's what you didn't do let's try that again [Music] brushing is probably the most important part of good dental care danny and there's a technique to it just as there is in hitting a baseball or running the bases first of all brush the biting surfaces of the teeth like this that's right now brush the upper teeth downward toward the biting edge now you've got it and no licking a promise job brush every area of your mouth at least 10 times turn can [Music] now brush the lower teeth upward ten times on the surface next to the cheeks and next to the tongue that's good just remember to brush your teeth the way they grow [Music] you know the magic ingredient in any toothpaste any elbow grease those tiny little food particles sugar especially help to create acids that attack the tooth enamel next thing decay cavity and a toothache [Music] okay fine job [Music] danny that's dangerous you can chip a tooth on the faucet much better to use a glass [Music] [Music] danny don't play tarzan on the banister lots of injuries to the teeth happen in your own home [Music] danny i know brush my teeth but i haven't got time make time there's nothing more important but what happens when you're away from home well you can use a toothbrush after you eat just use the swish and swallow method swish the water around your mouth and where does it work swallow it the swishing will get rid of some of the food particles and the water is good for you anyway [Music] danny what now well done [Music] peanut butter and jelly a growing boy needs energy he also needs his teeth that jelly is nice and sticky and loaded with sugar the peanut butter acts just like putty it pastes the sugar right on the teeth one she wins i see some nice luscious apples in the refrigerator apples an apple is one of nature's toothbrushes it scours the teeth as you chew it great [Applause] hold it i don't know who your friend is danny but tell him for me that playing pranks at a water fountain is mighty dangerous the spout of the fountain is usually hard porcelain or metal and if you bang your teeth against it it can cause permanent and serious injury boy that hurts some kids are just stupid i'll have a look at that tooth in a few minutes [Music] danny what did i do now soda pop i'm thirsty soda pop is loaded with sugar well gee whiz you know there's a new looking soda pop science has found a way of sweetening it without sugar why not do your teeth a favor and try it what's so wrong about sugar anyway sugar helps produce acids that begin drilling tiny holes into the tooth surface almost as soon as the acid touches but you need sugar or energy sure you do and you can get all you need from a good balanced diet from fruits vegetables milk and other basic foods hey this is great one of these days try the new sugarless candy you like that too i will [Music] so you see danny every day there are a dozen ways to practice better dental care good diet proper brushing regular checkups and no sliding down bonuses now let's take a look i've got the best dentist in the whole world he's a wig he's got this thing that turns at 250 000 times a minute that's 10 times faster than an airplane propeller but you know what he told me he said a dentist is only the second best one to care for my teeth i'm the first my team [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so wow that was uh that was great and for some reason i thought that film was actually a drug film i mean you could argue that it it's a drug film for um fluoride but um yeah what a what a great um it's a great film because it uses a gimmick that kids love anyways which is seeing things in reverse um in fact i have many films that have basically uh bore the brunt of teachers who are like like well we just watch this board and film so let's watch it reverse and it just shreds the film so i i know that's something because i that's something that my teacher did i remember um we watched some film about um safety bus safety and they showed it in reverse and we thought it was hilarious anyways uh thanks danny uh this next film is um this is kind of related to what happened uh yesterday uh we saw sir richard branson um become an astronaut astronaut um i was you know being kind of a space geek along with an av geek um i was interested in it uh i think that it was a very elegant way to get somebody into a sub-orbit but it's just tourism it's just space tourism and it was just a big brochure for um you know buy a ticket be an astronaut uh that part of it was really kind of galling and it made me want to sit back and um watch a nasa film because uh you know being an astronaut a nasa astronaut or a russian astronaut or uh you know whatever is months and months if not years of training uh and it's not just a you know five minutes into sub orbit and then five minutes in space and then you come down it is a big deal um and so i was intrigued by it but i was also kind of like come up with a different term than astronaut um because astronauts do a lot of work and so here's the the effort behind uh launching something into space this is steps to saturn enjoy [Music] in the ancient world men of science cataloging the visible universe observed a star of greater brightness than the first magnitude and named it saturn later in the first decade of the space age men of science again applied the name saturn to a giant rocket vehicle an instrument of far greater magnitude than its predecessors created for the peaceful invasion of space this saturn promises to enrich the experience and knowledge of man far beyond existing limits the discovery of saturn the planet and the birth of saturn the space transport are separated by a span of three thousand years yet only a little more than three years elapsed between the decision to produce the saturn rocket and its preparation here for flight this accomplishment some of a series of achievements the steps to saturn is in itself an historic chapter in the evolution of rocketry key to the conquest of space the origins of rocketry are very deep in history [Music] yet there is a point at which the rocket principle became a practical consideration as the means of investigating matters beyond earth in 1926 dr robert h goddard an american college professor successfully demonstrated the fundamentals of controlled rocket flight his theories still valid shaped first outlines of a now dynamic and vital area of science rocket technology dr goddard the practical visionary thus took the first steps to saturn yet in the wake of world war ii united states developmental efforts were largely directed at producing military rockets in 1953 the united states fired its first true ballistic missile the redstone redstone contributed heavily to the technical capability of the infant american rocket industry thus later the intermediate-range ballistic missiles and the larger intercontinental missiles could dwarf the performance figures of earlier rockets dr goddard measured his successes in linear feet jupiter and irbm could precisely target an objective 1500 miles distance jupiter flew first in 1957 and in that year sputnik 1 was placed in orbit with that single act of rocketry the character of international endeavor was abruptly altered scientific achievement for the first time became a popular barometer of national reputation and the area of ambition shifted from the tiny confines of earth outward to the measureless arena of space this too was a step to saturn it made mandatory the immediate utilization of military rocket systems as space taxi in january of 1958 a jupiter c vehicle hurled into orbit the first u.s satellite explorer one an impressive achievement score was rung up by many subsequent space probes but these steps to saturn taken together paid a far more important dividend they advanced the whole new technology of space rocket they enlisted and trained a space corps cadre technicians engineers planners researchers theoreticians all were permitted to learn sometimes through bitter failure but the technical establishment grew matured and so the saturn project able to build on proven experience and capability became a practical enterprise in august of 1958 the advanced research projects agency gave the go-ahead on saturn development to the army ballistic missile agency saturn was later transferred to the national aeronautics and space administration upon creation of the space agency development as a priority nasa project continues at the george c marshall space flight center huntsville alabama defined saturn is a rocket vehicle system of great flexibility designed to serve over an extended period as the multi-purpose workhorse of peaceful space exploration prime objective to contribute to the priority national space goal manned lunar landings yet the space payoff the mission can only be as rich as the basic capability of the carrier rocket so working toward the moon began with the development problems of lifting great bulk and weight free of the earth the requirement a booster of enormous brute force to muscle upper payload carrying stages into near space so a significant step to saturn was the executive decision develop quickly the big booster use available reliable hardware create a flyable first stage producing thrust in the order of one and a half million pounds this power output was almost four times the power of any rocket propulsion system in this country indicated was a task involving clustering proven engines tankage feed systems and associated hardware all combined in totally unprecedented multiples first the basic engine chosen was an improved and uprated unit of high reliability seasoned in the irbm and icbm programs the h1 a liquid propellant engine using rp1 fuel and liquid oxygen could produce 188 000 pounds of thrust multiplied by eight it would when successfully clustered give us space ambitions the big lift engine development was rapid first full power firing at the santa susana test site in california took place only three months after the go-ahead date and four months later the first engine reached alabama to the basic engine many engineering refinements had been applied these worked toward functional simplification which greatly increased reliability and efficiency repositioning of key components improved the overall unit configuration reduced weight and allowed easier boat tail maintenance eight engines are set in two square patterns inner engines are rigidly mounted and canted slightly to concentrate thrust vectors close to center of gravity in the outer pattern engines are canted outward to a greater degree and can be gimbaled gimbaling or swiveling is the means of directional control of the vehicle for by command signals from the guidance computer the engine gimballing can alter the direction of its thrust and thus the direction of the entire rocket maintaining the clustering concept booster tankage which forms the basic thrust carrying structure could also be utilized in multiples tooling for tankage in redstone and jupiter diameters was readily available thus development time to prove out tank configurations was reduced sharply by using existing facilities and experience booster superstructure then was designed to comprise nine propellant tanks center tank of jupiter diameter and four redstone diameter outer tanks carry liquid oxygen fuel is carried in the four remaining outer tanks a thrust frame assembly links together all tanks and supports the booster tanks carry a total of seven hundred fifty 000 pounds of propellant which through a manifolding system can be gulp dry by the engines in less than two minutes the manifolds delivering the propellant have an interchange capability so that any tank can feed any engine and propellant levels in all tanks are maintained equal during depletion at the top end of the booster 48 fiberglass spheres store the gaseous nitrogen used to pressurize fuel tanks this during operation helps to maintain uniform propellant flow liquid oxygen tanks are pressurized by gaseous oxygen tapped from engine heat exchangers fabrication of the booster goes forward but before this every component every piece of hardware of any size or function must prove itself by actual operational test testing qualifies the component's performance [Music] probes for hidden unsuspected flaws [Music] by endless repetition determines the reliability and sometimes fixes the precise limit of life the breaking point the test program proving point of the development cycle puts the stamp of acceptance or rejection on every item there are no unimportant items final assembly complete the booster is ready for functional testing [Music] captive within the test tower the engines will be fired as a cluster unit for the first time now the specters of rocket propulsion be intangible the unpredictable combustion instability structural weaknesses excessive vibration sonic stress all rise to haunt the test engineer at ignition everything is committed from the first performance met all expectations [Applause] [Music] on april 29 1960 all eight engines firing as a unit according to plan for the first time produced more than one million pounds of trust while the booster emerged as the major accomplishment other steps to saturn thousands of them were being taken each development day hundreds of industrial contractors contributed greatly diversified skills and products to nourish the growth process of the overall vehicle throughout the nation personnel services material all the know-how of highly specialized firms and agencies were integrated uniquely into this single space venture at marshall management teams wrestled with the intricate combinations of time capability and funding and a first citizen looking toward the problems of space noted carefully the details of the complex mosaic of the total saturn plan and in the laboratories of the space center the routine assault on detail the minute attention to the tiny hardware organisms of a great rocket continue quietly persistently study the little-known destructive vaporization of material and tissue in a space regime and with space captured in a bottle discover an effective lubricant for moving parts functioning in a total vacuum endlessly examine the environmental deterioration of matter especially metal search for answers to the questions of space existence search in fact for the questions and in the meantime new facilities must be developed to meet the accelerated needs of the program and it is axiomatic that facilities pace all other effort facilities for fabrication engineering personnel for development for testing and inevitably for launch and flight for saturn there was launch complex 34 two years in the making dominating the north end of the cape with its towering 300-foot gantry complex 34 awaited saturn from alabama to cape canaveral is 2 000 miles by water too huge for conventional transport the saturn vehicle floated the first leg of the journey to space on the back of a barge [Music] in a summer dawn saturn appears off the florida coast the piggyback passenger prone and piecemeal is tugged a final short step toward the launch site toward fulfillment the inland river routes to canaveral are lined with throngs the young the curious all those who sense in the arrival of the recumbent giant the meaningful appointment with history and some waiting who know intimately the history of the appointment assembly into flight position begins first the booster now vertical in flight position on the launch pedestal for the first research and development flights of saturn the two upper stages are not powered [Music] the second stage here is merely a water-filled passenger and aerodynamic component in later versions this saturn stage will be powered by high energy liquid hydrogen liquid oxygen engines the third stage a modified centaur is also inert here programmed to ride with water ballast this stage may also be powered in later saturns by two similar high energy engines to complete the vehicle the nose cone is mated to the upper stage this the first saturn does not carry an active payload but later when the giant has matured the installation of the nose cone filled with instruments and detection and recording devices or communication systems will be of overriding importance and in time the descendants of saturn will be topped by a spacecraft bearing humans on route to the moon saturn is ready for flight three years plus a few months and now only a few hours away from the absolute test countdown was initiated at 11 pm october 26th [Music] recorded after daylight the gantry moved back on schedule saturn stood alone [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] shortly after 9 a.m a short hold occurred to wait out a weather condition [Music] weather okay countdown resumed 10 05 a.m october 27 33 minus one minute [Music] disconnected [Music] 20 seconds [Music] ignition all engines running request commit launch commits stories tall weighing nearly 500 tons saturn flew all objectives were achieved all satisfactorily but beyond the moment of great accomplishment the engineering and scientific trial what does the first saturn flight bring in return earlier this was said space is open to us now and our eagerness to share its meaning is not governed by the efforts of others we go into space because whatever mankind must undertake free men must fully share i believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal before this decade is out of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth no single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind or more important for the long-range exploration of space and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish thus toward that goal a giant step the first saturn a product of directed human talent and energy which will be followed by other steps to eventually give to all mankind a freedom from the restraints of earth to probe toward the enlargement of knowledge to move toward the far reaches of the unknown to bring the visible and invisible universe into the catalog of human experience these steps to saturn continue [Music] so i'm not going to debate whether or not we went on the moon because it's it happened so um there's someone who's vocally saying that we didn't based on some videos that they watched um anyways so the reason why i showed this is because yesterday was was interesting because it was once you get through all the virgin galactic pr it was an interesting way to say like wow we got somebody into space effortlessly without using a saturn rocket wow that was awesome but to call them astronauts just seemed really disingenuous to the astronauts who actually did a bunch of work spent months years training so space tourists yes there were space tourists yesterday but not astronauts um so um i have digitized a lot of of nasa filming video and um so it what interests me is all the footage that is before the fact of all the time the energy that they spend talking about like maybe a tedious amount of work that they talked about how they're going to do it and then marshall space center is where they did all the engine testing where they actually created the saturns and did all that that work and that's ultimately where they're doing the new i think they're doing the aries there unless we've abandoned aries um so there's a lot of interesting things that happened at marshall um what i recommend is i think there's an american experience i was talking about when sputnik launched and how basically werner verner von braun who was our nazi science nazi scientist that we took out of um uh germany and we had him as part of our army space program before it was nasa how they were working on a way to launch a satellite even though they weren't supposed to be and their stories about how they actually hid the satellite in somebody's car trunk when government officials came by and so when there were two competing and that's the thing about nasa and asset is actually not one's thing it's actually lots of different little kingdoms uh that's what i discovered in doing this digitizing project is like they're all actively competing so there was this competition between two entities that were creating rockets that were going to launch into space so uh von braun's team which is in huntington and then there was another team i can't remember who that was that was like a navy based thing but they failed and so like after sputnik launched eisenhower was like we gotta launch something now we can't be shown up we gotta do it pretty quickly and it was because von braun had been secretly testing this this thing that they were able to launch uh telstar or the explorer so it's it's really interesting story um about a lot of people who did a lot of things that maybe they weren't supposed to um but it's kind of the gung-ho that early rocket rocketing um thing that is captured in some films like october sky but um it's an interesting history um and i think that's the reason to really kind of discount the idea that it's like oh it's a hoax because people are looking at it from a very narrow standpoint they're looking at the same footage than nasa or that people show of the moon landing they keep looking at that same footage they don't look at the vast amount of footage they don't look at the vast amount of photography that was done it's a beautiful high resolution photography that most people have not seen unless they go to the smithsonian or they go to the national archives so thanks
