hello everybody welcome i'm skip alzheimer and uh welcome to our avgeek's lunchtime streaming show um brought to you from pot muggy raleigh north carolina where um i'm happy to say that the zebra cobra that had escaped from a pet owner in north raleigh uh the zebra cobra has been recovered safely um that was the big international news that was popping around um zebra cobras are not native to north carolina uh we have copperheads cottonmouths rattlesnakes but not cobras this was something that somebody brought they didn't feel like there was enough uh venomous snakes in north carolina so they upped the game a little bit um anyways we watch old 16 millimeter films and uh show them to you uh there was some commenting on youtube about uh reels um the cost of reels i go with urban ski films um they are based outside of chicago and they're not the cheapest but they're consistently good and they'll ship and they'll send you a packing a tracking number and all that stuff so um you know i like i like and the urban ski family they're awesome anyways uh there was a question some people who collect films that are on this uh watch this show have films on cores and they're like well i want to put them onto reels and i said like actually if you can um keep them on the course archivally that's a good idea but you can't run them on a projector so that's where a split reel comes in split reel is basically a reel that splits and you put the core like right it sits right on here i don't have a core handy to show you i thought it did dang it's much for visual aids but uh yeah so this is uh a way to keep things on their cores and um off the reels now why would you do that why would you want to get them off a reel because isn't that how you play them well the thing is that reels can a couple things can happen with reels one is they if they're bent they can cause issues when you're showing them uh they can rust if you're not careful um they can apply undue pressure when they're bent and basically that causes problems you know if you have undue pressure then sometimes it will you pull it off the film it will scratch or it'll cause issues where it loses the loop when you run through a projector split reels you can also get from urban ski films and i put a link in the comments they're not cheap but they're worth it because you know the other thing is like uh reels add weight so if you have like shelving units and you have a bunch of films that are in metal cams and have metal reels suddenly you got some substantial weight and um cores are not nearly as heavy and they're cheaper than reels in most cases um i mean you have to put them on the bench and all that stuff but um yeah whenever possible we try to go to split reels but um yeah anyways or go to course so there you go um old radios i'm just reading your comment they are not rare and you can find them for sale uh try to get new ones that aren't bent because split reels can can bend as well anyhow um we're learning a lot today so let's figure out what happens when a firebomb drops in your house [Music] [Music] war brings the challenge of fire from the skies the most common type of fire bomb is the lightweight magnesium incendiary shown here its purpose is simple to demoralize the people and the wolf attacks the local fire departments and air raid precautions units one bomber can carry as many as 2 000 firebombs in one load enough to start about 150 fires unless each bomb is quickly controlled the problem seems answerless because professional and auxiliary firemen must be dispatched to only the most serious fires this is where you are needed to protect yourself your family your home and community the answer lies in your hands fire bombs are dangerous but you can control them effectively and with reasonable safety and here's how first the bomb itself 14 inches long by two inches in diameter and weighing approximately two pounds falls nose downward guided by its tail fins the body of the bomb is a shell or tube of magnesium with walls about one half inch thick backed in the center of the shell is thermos and at one end of the shell is a starting mechanism in its downward flight the bomb gathers sufficient speed so that its impact forces the firing pin into a percussion cap which ignites a starting mixture this in turn ignites the thermite compound which fills the core of the bomb so violent and intense is the thermite reaction that it sprays flaming metal over a considerable area stay clear of the bomb during this violent period to avoid being splattered by burning sparks of molten metal thermite consists of iron oxide and granular aluminum all burning requires oxygen in thermit the iron oxide is able to supply oxygen to help the aluminum to burn because the thermite carries its own oxygen supply there is no way to extinguish it by smothering and no way to extinguish it by cooling below the burning point because it burns at the extremely high temperature of 4 500 degrees fahrenheit yielding molten iron and aluminum oxide the purpose of the thermite is to burn hotly enough to light the magnesium shell which will now burn intensely for 10 to 20 minutes during which time it will start a serious fire if left unattended magnesium like the aluminum and thermite must have oxygen to burn but unlike thermite which contains its own supply magnesium must obtain oxygen from the air or elsewhere if somehow the air supply could be cut down we would be able to cut down the burning of the bomb one way to do this is by using sand take this example for instance a bomb has fallen into the attic the violet threat reaction has finished the magnesium is burning but the fire has not spread so a shovel and a pail of sand are brought up pouring most of the sand onto the floor we start to work first shoveling sand over the bomb this covering of sand makes it more difficult for air to reach the bomb thus though sand will not extinguish the bomb it will slow up its burning and cut down the heat radiated from it notice how close to the bomb the operator can work under these circumstances since burning magnesium actually reacts with the sand the bomb does not long stay completely covered but erupts through the sand blanket much like a seething a few inches of sand are placed in the bottom of the tail so that the bomb will not burn through and carried out then the bomb and sand covering are scooped up with a flat nose shovel and dumped into the pail you can see how important the straight edge on the front of the shovel is in making a clean job of scraping up the bomb after covering the bomb in the pail with more sand any traces of molten burning magnesium or burning wood embers left on the floor are extinguished with water spray from a water type extinguisher and then thrusting the handle of the shovel through the pale handle which by now is too hot to touch the pale bomb and all is carried downstairs to be dumped outside where it can do no harm surprising but true is the fact that water which puts out ordinary fires acts as fuel for burning magnesium speeding up the process of combustion oxygen is considerably more concentrated in water than in air and the burning magnesium is able to decompose water and extract oxygen from it to support its burning a solid stream of water applied to burning magnesium causes a dangerously explosive reaction the solid stream forces water into pockets of molten magnesium forming steam of tremendous pressure which shoots out spraying burning magnesium in all directions on the other hand water applied in the form of a coarse spray is the best method of handling magnesium bonds the spray speeds up the burning of the magnesium reducing the life of the bomb to about two minutes and wetting down the surroundings thus restricting the spread of the fire the lighter weight of the spray keeps the water on the surface of the molten magnesium and steam is dissipated without the explosive effect caused by a solid stream of water perhaps the simplest and most common device for producing a water spray is a garden hose long enough to reach the remote or top floor it should have the usual adjustable nozzle which can be changed from a spray for the bomb to a solid stream for extinguishing fires that have spread in the surroundings but there always remains the danger that water pressure may fail in a crucial moment during an air raid water mains may have been bombed or fire apparatus nearby may be draining and lowering the pressure in your locality so don't count solely on a garden hose another convenient source of water with self-contained pressure to produce an effective stream or spray is the standard soda acid extinguisher which is turned upside down for use on fires and held that way by the bottom handle so long as water pressure is desired in this instance we have the most probable situation as you arrive on the scene the fire is spreading fast in materials close to the bomb using a solid stream control this fire first then breaking the stream with your thumb partially over the nozzle create a coarse spray which is correct for use on the bomb itself keeping a watchful eye of course for any flaring up of the surroundings to completely extinguish a fire bomb and to bring the average blaze which is spread from the bomb under control two extinguishers are desirable and now a second one is brought in to finish the job embers left to smolder are dangerous so avoid any later flare up by assuring yourself that none remains all other water type extinguishers loaded stream gas cartridge or foam are suitable for use on magnesium bombs here is a foam extinguisher starting off with a spray for safety to avoid a possible explosive reaction the foam is directed at the bomb which in this case has fallen onto a concrete garage floor after the foam blanket has started to build up around the bomb it is safe to change to the stream gradually the foam builds a blanket over the top of the burning bomb while the water in the burning magnesium beneath and speeds up the fire occasionally the bomb will burst through craters but for the most part the foam blanket serves to cut down the heat and glare finish off the bomb with another foam extinguisher or any other convenient water spray source only water filled or water solution types of chemical extinguishers are recommended for use on magnesium incendiary bombs themselves all other fire extinguishers will perform the same effective service on fires started by incendiaries as they always have on fire started from other causes but they are not effective on magnesium if you arrive before the thermite reaction is finished take cover until it is over to avoid the danger from spurts of burning thermite or a possible explosive charge which would reveal itself during this initial period tom has settled down to simply burning magnesium go to work with a solid stream first honor which is spread from the bomb then switch over to spray on the bomb itself used here is a device called the pump tank which carries a supply of water that is forced out through its hose by pressure from the hand-operated pump this is a particularly clear illustration of the manner in which the water spray wets down the area surrounding the bomb as the bomb itself is being rapidly consumed the pump tank may be equipped with hose longer than the standard length which gives it the only practical feature of the english stirrup pump the long hose aids in fighting incendiaries out on roofs and up and attic locks where to carry anything but a hose would be difficult with the long hose of course the device will require additional manpower a second man pumps while the hose operator gives his attention first to the fire resulting from the bomb using the solid water stream there's no point in spraying the bomb first while the house burns down around you so bring the spreading fire under control to start with then give the bomb the works incidentally you'll notice that the further you put your thumb over the nozzle the finer the spray to find a spray fails to feed enough water to sufficiently accelerate the rate of burning of the bomb and it is this cutting down of the total burning time that makes water so desirable a method of incendiary control the third man is necessary to refill the pump tank before it's empty so that the pumper can maintain a steady pressure of water for the hose operator this third person also keeps a watch in other parts of the house for any spread of fire or other firebombs he refills his fail from whatever water supply is available of course if a sudden flare-up of the fire occurs it is wise to shift from the bomb for a moment to bring the spreading fire under control but the sooner the bomb is out the better so get it out of the way as quickly as possible and then see tall traces of the fire that may be burning or smoldering are put out tests have shown that certain thicknesses of roofing materials will resist penetration and they are shown here most home roofs are not this strongly constructed hence it is expected that if an incendiary bomb crashes through the bomb will come to rest on the upper floor with the attic with our air raid warden like most addicts it is cluttered up with as fine an assortment of fuel as any incendiary bomb could desire so out with the clothes and other things which are removable and which might catch on fire easily a few back issues of magazines at the wrong time would help to make your house more than a back issue if they go too and let's clear out the dollhouse ending including the dollhouse itself clearing the attic will reduce the danger of fast spreading fire there but a bomb may still burn through and penetrate the ceiling of the room below then you will have to put out fires on both floors so if your local building department approves some protection against burning through attic floor laying overlapping rows of building paper and then by spreading a layer of two inches of dry sand over the sand place wooden frames with chicken wire stretched over them four to six inches above the sand so that it will break the fall of the bomb and prevent it from scattering the sand keep equipment accessible ready for instant action fire extinguisher should be kept properly mounted for easy access and inspected and recharged regularly it's easy to keep a supply of sand and shovels on hand and pump tanks should be kept filled with water and enough so the further that film went along the more damaged it got so that's probably why it just got kind of cut off um fascinating stuff though um really trying to address a civil defense issue that was a big issue in uh england during the blitz um you know being concerned that that could potentially happen in the united states um so kind of kind of interesting um also teaching people how to use a hose like put your put your thumb over it um but uh now that it's summer you've got to see florida oh yeah let me just say before um i get started thank you william for the coffee you can land of strange contrasts land of mysterious everglades and bright beaches land of glamorous gaiety and land of peaceful serenity land of tropical sunsets that provide golden halos [Music] land of clear blue mornings where the seabirds glide silently overhead on a whisper smooth offshore breeze land of nature's magic where porpoises are fed by hand and young pelicans dig deep into that famous beak that holds food enough for a week florida where you get school credit for learning to water ski since 1513 when florida's first tourist ponce de leon dropped some gossip about the fountain of youth countless other tourists have been searching for it youth that is although papaya juice may not brighten the eye and quicken the step for all time it is good and good for you small wonder that so many ex-tourists now live the year-round and very permanent-looking wigwams and continue the search for youth from truly gracious surroundings florida is so many things few of us really get to know her she is for instance an agricultural career girl well on her way to blooming booming success crisp green salads by the acre not only help make florida a healthful place to live but form an important bulwark to her ever-expanding economy these salads are for the northern winter market much of florida is lavishly lush and fertile sugarcane grows higher than an elephant's eye and modern harvesting devices and the famous sunshine are combining to build the sugarcane industry into big business the whole everglades region of florida is topped with 10 feet or more of rich rich top soil called muckland the catch is much of the top soil is topped with water so huge drainage ditches are cut across the florida everglades reclaiming thousands of acres of fertile muck land at a time once reclaimed this land is so lush and fertile that as the saying goes you plant then stand back out of the way grasses originally imported from india help reclaim the land it's grass with a will to live something like that crabgrass that gives you trouble in your front lawn here's an odd system of planting roots and tops and all are spread over the reclaimed land rollers merely push the green grass close to the earth and nature does the rest roots spring out searching for the fertile soil at the nodes the joints of the grass and soon one stalk becomes many in three to six months zoom there's a cattle boom more cattle more tons of luscious beefsteak to the acre than mighty texas ever managed fine new breeds and crossbreeds of cattle grazing and growing on the man-made pampers that a few short years ago was swamped that's lusty up-and-coming young miss florida she's good to know and she's the backbone of florida's newfound prosperity on the other hand there's the dignified dowager princess florida you'll meet her when you visit the state capitol in tallahassee the only dixie capital the yanks failed to capture in the war between the states this miss florida is a bit austere and loaded with tradition you meet her when you visit st augustine and knock on the door of the oldest house in america enter and stroll through the centuries-old but still lovely gardens since the 16th century 14 families have lived here and each altered and enlarge the structure the oldest house is a living part of history where visitors can search and find marks of american progress you are with the austere lady florida when you wander through the moulding ruins of old forts this one castillo de san marcos was designed by a french architect but at various times both the english and the spanish manned the gunports if you happen to be a small boy here's the place to fire up your imagination and look out to sea and fire an ancient five pounder at an imaginary pirate but of all the floridas there are the warm mother florida is perhaps best to know she's a seabird a rosie at turn sheltering her baby from the sun and clucking sounds of cheer for a newcomer to a strange bright world these are called turns why do you suppose they are called turds this fellow looks like a diplomat all decked out in white tie and tails do you suppose it's because mama and papa turn take turns guarding and warming and turning the single egg each pair hatches no no no it's because these birds belong to the sub family sternives why who are you i'm a naturalist a naturalist oh what do you do well i visit the bird sanctuaries sort of watch over wildlife and count the birds and if hi you must be a very busy man [Music] these are naughty turns a certain mr audubon who knew a great deal about bird said that these were called naughty because they used to land on the art arms of old sailing vessels and sleep there during the night nodding another naturalist named watson says they're called naughty because they nod or bow as part of the courtship ceremony what's this ceremony crash is this is this a family conference about the career of the youngster by the way where are we we're on bird island now well how did we get here well we gassed up and drove 100 miles over the overseas highway to key west [Music] we paused just long enough for a good look at a beautiful landmark then we flew to fort jefferson florida's newest national park fort jefferson but i thought you said it was bird island that's right bird island it's over there just beyond the battlements see it we do get around don't we oh my yes anything's possible in florida watch how quickly we can whisk halfway up the coast to the marine studios where the porpoises will play catch with you if you like the attendants ran underwater dinner bell at dinner time and the porpoises demonstrate a really first-class boarding house reach one thing is sure you don't have to travel far to see interesting things in florida just hop in the car and travel to something new and something strange [Music] less than 20 minutes from these modern hotels i could show you of course we go by boat part of the way i could show you some of the most interesting now be quiet and just watch what goes on this is the purple gallinule one of florida's friendliest birds the lily pads or her supermarket lily pads make dandy stepping stones if you have the feet for it the mother is teaching her youngster that life is complex even for gallinules they must learn how to eat and not be eaten [Music] say that's an alligator sure he's out shopping for dinner too [Music] this is a typical everglades drama let's just watch it play out [Music] [Applause] [Music] boy i'm glad they're safe under mother's wing is a symbol of safety but life in the everglades isn't all drama there's peace and serenity and beauty of a very special sort for once take the time take plenty of time to really look at a water lily and you'll see what i mean an epidemic orchid [Music] a wild iris and a swamp pink orchid say that dragonfly looks like a helicopter he can fly just like one but butterflies even the common false monarchs have to eat if you take time to really look at butterflies you'll see that their tongues are tubes to sip the nectar from the blossoms of the pickerel weed [Music] the eat or be eaten drama is ever present these trumpets digest insects and the evil eye of the alligator and the ominous bellow of the alligator [Music] i get the idea [Music] [Music] even the beautiful birds are hunters the white ibis isn't posing for a picture he's looking for a crayfish [Music] the little blue heron is a hunter too the coots are winter visitors tourists and so is the sora rail this snowy egret isn't merely admiring his reflection he's puddling for fish to eat [Music] and the little green heron moves as stealthily as a cat as he creeps quietly up for the kill [Music] the seminole natives of florida's everglades have learned the fish spearing skill of the birds [Music] the gaudy headdress and gay apparel of florida's first residence outdoor in riotous color the plumage of the birds during the last century life for the seminoles was a series of battles so the women had little bit scraps to sew with but they made the best of things and evolved a gaudy patchwork style of dress living close to nature in wallace homes called chickees there's a natural tempo of life just hinted at by the wooden pastels that grind the corn and the rhythmic flip-flop of a tortilla taking shape [Music] it's an easy tempo that makes you think it would be kind of nice to swing and sway the seminal way modern florida swings to another tempo a 30-ton bucket on the largest drag line in the world that's how florida gets at her plentiful phosphates huge hoses are used to dissolve mountains of the valuable natural chemical so it can be piped to up to the minute processing plants but it's purified by the most modern methods there's nothing primitive about the phosphate industry florida phosphates help make florida citrus fruits the best in the world did you know that in the huge modern plants like this part of the work they do is purifying out sharks teeth and fossils and sea shells if it's sea shells you want don't go to a phosphate plant visit sanibel island there a family can stroll by the surf and pick up more and more interesting and actually rarer shells than most any place on earth ah yes gastropoda and bivalves ah junos volute to me it's a spotted sea shell but it sure is pretty like i say florida is all things to all people hermit crabs make houses out of seashells when they outgrow one they just crawl into another they're practical morinda is practical here for instance is the practical way to pick origins there's a glamour way to pick them too because florida is both glamorous and practical but in the end the golden health-laden fruit is harvested packed and shipped to grace all america's breakfast tables with plenty of vitamin c then there's the orange bowl football game a classic competition and a festival full of dash and dazzling color dash and color you haven't seen anything yet florida's the game fisherman's paradise you haven't lived unless you've at least tried for a sailfish pardon me but uh who are you i'm ray scott let's go after a sailfish of course we'll take anything that shows fight a marlin a snook or a snapper or even a wahoo the big thing is to get out on the blue water and let the clear clear ocean air fill your lungs wash away the city smoke and put that sparkle in your eyes big game fishing is a man's sport but boy what fun for a boy and plenty of female deep sea nimrods get a bang out of that surging tug on the line a fighting strike of the fabulous blue marlin too bad but never mind we're after a sailfish he struck he's hooked boy is he a whopper watch it there locating luring and landing a sailfish takes some doing [Music] so the lucky crew of a victorious craft always flies a flag haven't begun to see the real florida yet the natural beauties of the sun setting behind palm trees the royal poinsiana or flame trees so beautiful there's an annual festival in their honor and the poinsettia the christmas flower and the white-tailed deer that wraith-like wander across the hammocks of the everglades and the limp can cross the hammocks of the everglades and the limpkins as graceful as the name limpkin and the anhinga or snake birds that swim like a snake and have to put themselves out to dry before they can fly again the florida sunshine dries the wings so fast you can see them change color [Music] and crystal pools so bright and clear that common bluegills look like jewels i know i know and the parrot jungles for any visitor can pose with a garland of friendly flower-like birds where some of the birds look like pirates [Applause] the gorgeous gay old rascals like pirates sometimes sail off on rainbow wings to raid the neighbors fruit trees and we haven't even visited miami university this campus extends far beyond the buildings some classes are even held under water what a place to go to school and study with a sea breeze rippling the pages of the textbooks nor have we visited the famous bach singing tower or heard the carillon but as i say miss florida is all things to all people [Music] [Applause] she's young and sprightly and she's dignified and beautiful you have to see her and meet her in person she'll welcome you but even when you see her and meet her you may not believe what you see thank you the for uh gulf oil companies for that fine travelogue to florida she's an awesome state of course florida man that's a different story um i think it's funny that uh there's that epis there's that cartoon where bugs bunny is upset with the bounty on rabbit and he becomes public enemy number one and one of the things he does is he saws um florida loose so it kind of floats free um it's kind of interesting uh all right uh trying to watch something on the telecity this is a definite um break this is a non-narrated film and it's kind of fun it's called a sunday lark so enjoy so [Music] foreign which was a bunch of we got to for charity smash things um and also i showed this as part of a film called our series called the free range kids which was basically showing kids just being kids and uh big fan and i knew it wasn't going to end badly um you know 10 years after this they might have made it end badly but uh at the time this was quaint clever
