we watch old 16 millimeter films and might be able to pick up a language i don't know um that's part of a series that we've been showing uh teaching you french um so that was more festive and it's actually longer than a lot of them um too bad i don't have the notes the teaching notes or teaching guide related to this um maybe we could have a more uh i don't know more enriched learning experience um so uh like i said we watch old 16 millimeter films until we don't and so behind me behind me uh you can't quite see it um i have a 35 millimeter film hooked up to the scanner that's one of the great things about this um sintel is it can scan 35 millimeter uh so uh this will be our first 35 millimeter film that we're gonna scan and broadcast live i don't know if anybody who does that um it's a first for av geeks um it's still a 16 millimeter lunch because predominantly what we show are 16 millimeter films but we're gonna dabble a little bit uh so this is an interesting uh thing that i got from memphis uh tennessee a collector there had a bunch of films a bunch of 16 millimeter films that they got from memphis public schools uh but they also had some stuff that they got from a local theater so there was a little bit of adult material in there that was really ragged but there was also this a bunch of advertising um and it was a company that was basically uh in memphis that was selling advertising to theaters from local businesses and from national businesses and so this is very early film um and this is nitrate so um so some of you who know about film um we can talk about it we're gonna geek out a little bit here so you got your film base which is clear clear plasticky then you have the emulsion which is on top of it the emulsion is where all the graphic information is and it's you know either color emulsion or black and white but the base traditionally was with an uh nitrate cellulose uh which was made out of wood pulp uh and basically was made clear and that's what a lot of plastic was made out of at that time and the problem with nitrate is that over a period of time it can become flammable uh and we don't have a lot of it we have very little of it so this is probably one of the biggest reels that we have of it and it's in good shape and what you'll see is the the color is stunning the black and white is super crisp and some of that comes with it being 35 but nitrate the what they used for the emulsions back then it's really stunning so this is a bunch of advertising uh so we're gonna give this a shot this is a big experiment i'm gonna try this and we have some others other 35 things but they're not built up on big reels the other thing is it's a big reel but it goes by very quickly because it's going 24 frames a second and the frames are bigger they're like um four times the size or three times two times some something like that compared to 16. um anyways so here is alexander films advertising enjoy situated at the foot of you can't frame it reframe it you have to stop it and then reframe it and i figured it already stopped once so i'm not gonna go through that again um anyways yeah it looked stunning i don't know about you guys but it was really cool so something that we can pursue uh in the future uh is i can scout out some more 35 and set up more reels and we can watch them but it will still be 16 millimeter predominantly so let's learn about arithmetic in a food store enjoy [Music] this has been an exciting day at school ms stewart and her class are discussing their plans for tomorrow's picnic now miss stewart and the picnic committee are going shopping for some of the things they will need each member of the picnic committee has a list of things to buy and a certain amount of money to spend they're going to use their arithmetic to figure how much things will cost and to decide how many things to buy ms stewart reminds the committee how many will be at the picnic sixteen boys and girls miss stewart herself of course and sue's mother who is coming along to help how many is that all together sixteen plus two make eighteen in all ms stewart is going to buy the frankfurters and buns for frankfurters she has an allowance of 1.50 cents here's a package of 20 frankfurters enough for everyone they cost 1.35 cents so she's within her allowance of a dollar and fifty cents the first item on sue's list is paper plates here's a package of 10. the price of these 10 plates is 9 cents but sue knows she needs more than 10 plates here's a larger package of 20 plates for 16 cents which plates shall sue buy the package of 20 plates at 16 cents or the same number of plates in two packages at nine cents each nine plus nine equals eighteen sue sees that the two packages for 18 cents will cost two cents more than the large package at 16 cents so sue chooses the less expensive package of 20 plates for 16 cents the next thing on zoo's shopping list is bananas she will buy bananas for half the picnickers she remembers there are 18 picnickers she also remembers that one half of 18 is nine four bananas plus two more equals six now how many more do we need is this bunch of six too many yes the clerk splits it in half half of six is three now the three bananas plus the two and the other four all together are nine bananas the number that sue wants for those who may not want bananas jack is buying watermelon the cost of a whole watermelon is 80 cents the clerk tells jack that he may have half a watermelon for 40 cents now the clerk cuts the half in two this piece is a quarter or fourth of a watermelon jack may have it for 20 cents jack decides that a quarter melon is not enough so he'll buy a half for 40 cents now jack is buying paper cups this package of 20 costs 30 cents jack decides to see how much he has spent so far the watermelon has cost 40 cents and the paper cups are 30 cents jack will add by tens four tens and three tens are seven tens or seventy cents now that jack has paper cups he's going to buy some milk he knows there will be 16 children at the picnic so he'll need 16 cups of milk how many quarts of milk shall he buy jack remembers how he figured a problem like this in class the little box stands for a one quart carton of milk he knows a quart of milk will fill four cups so he puts four dots one for each cup in the box he draws more boxes and puts four dots into each one he sees that he'll have to buy four quarts of milk to get 16 cups now how much will the four quarts cost each carton is 25 cents or one quarter so four cartons of milk cost four quarters or one dollar or one hundred cents and how much has jack spent in all he writes one hundred cents below the seventy cents he's already spent 70 cents added to 100 cents are 170 cents this equals or is the same as one dollar and seventy cents and that's within jack's allowance of two dollars dick is choosing a large bag of potato chips he's already selected a jar of mustard dick is going to add the prices of these two things to find out how much he's spent so far eleven cents are one ten and one one forty three cents are four tens and three ones that adds up to five tens and four ones 54 cents dick is wondering how much money he has left he was given 85 cents now he'll subtract the 54 cents he spent four from five is one five from eight is three thirty one cents left carol is also adding up the cost of her things here's the way she adds five and one are six and three are nine three and one are four and two are six carol has spent 69 cents she was allowed 75 cents so carol is within her budget now the boys and girls of the picnic committee are reporting to ms stewart the children give miss stewart their shopping lists and put all their purchases into one cart ms stewart adds the amounts that the boys and girls of the picnic committee have spent she also writes down the amount she has spent for the frankfurters and buns she has bought the picnic committee spent three dollars and sixty one cents she spent two dollars and fourteen cents she'll let jack add these amounts five seven five they've spent five dollars and seventy five cents altogether that's fine for there are six dollars and 88 cents in the picnic fund carol will find out how much is left since 5.75 cents was spent carol subtracts this from six dollars and 88 cents five from eight three seven from eight one and five from six one one dollar and thirteen cents is left have they added their amounts correctly how can we tell let's see what the checkers total will be 5.75 the same answer as theirs the committee is happy because they now have everything for tomorrow's picnic the picnic was enjoyed by all because everyone helped because everyone took part knowing arithmetic made it easier for the committee to do the picnic shopping knowing and understanding arithmetic makes it easier for all of us to do our problems [Music] i love that uh background music i'm sure i'm gonna get dinged for it but um it shows up in a couple of uh cornet films it's a pretty great uh so i don't have the next film uh lined up yet on the on the um scanner but uh we'll get to it in the meantime this is a newish film uh also made by coronet called the alphabet of space which is pretty cool uh so enjoy [Music] [Music] the alphabet will take you into places you have never been to from letter a to letter z you'll learn about astronomy you'll learn about a kind of place a kind of place that we call space you'll watch the rockets as they fly you'll see the earth from way up high you'll look at moons and planets too [Music] you'll see what astronauts can do so now with letters a to z come take a trip through space with me [Music] a is for astronauts women and men who leave the earth and return again they train in a very special place and learn to travel and live in space here are some things each one is taught as each becomes an astronaut b is for blast off with roaring sound a rocket blasts off from the ground [Music] c is for craters those are holes in the ground on the moon you can find lots of craters around is it a crater a hard thing to make no it's not a rock hits the moon and then that's what you've got d is for doc when spaceships dock they come together and then they lock this one's going to die quite soon with another ship flying around the moon e is for earth the earth is a planet a planet can't shine like a star can can it the sun is a star it gives us light the earth needs the sun to make it bright where the sun shines its day where it doesn't it's night f is for face that's what people call what they see on the moon but there's no face at all its mountains and planes make it look that way there isn't any face no matter what people say g is for gravity a pull that's right it keeps you down and holds you tight on the earth or the moon you can jump but then gravity pulls you down again it lets you walk around a place instead of floating off in space to leave a moon or planet we must push against its gravity h is for high very high you know when the earth looks very small below when everything that you can see is not as big as it should be the mountains don't look tall at all the biggest rivers look quite small and see that fluffy swirling cloud well that's a storm that's fierce and loud a hurricane a storm at sea with winds as strong as they can be up here it's just a quiet place there is no weather out in space [Music] i is for ice cold and white that helps a comet shine so bright the head of a comet's mostly ice you know a mountain made of ice and snow j is for jupiter the biggest planet of all compared to this planet the earth's very small the earth might seem quite big to you but jupiter's 100 times bigger that's true k is for knowledge the things that we learn from space probes we send out that never return [Music] but while they are traveling they keep sending in pictures that show us just where they have been they might show us saturn's quite beautiful rings or some of its moons they're unusual things [Music] it's all so amazing the knowledge we've learned from space probes that went out and never returned [Music] l is for light from the sun so bright our sun shines with a dazzling light our sun is really just a star it's hot and bright as most stars are when it shines there in the sky it shows where moons and planets lie [Music] m is for mission control that's right where people watch a rocket's flight they send the rocket on its way and make sure everything's okay [Music] [Music] [Music] n is for nebulous what can they be clouds of dust and gas that we see they're not nearby they're very far as far away as a distant star some nebulas are dark as night and other nebulas are bright o is for orbit a path in space that you follow while traveling around some place the earth's in orbit around the sun and so are you and everyone [Music] p is for planets of our solar system we only have nine so i'm going to list them these four are closest to the sun and mercury is the closest one then there's venus earth and mars planets reflect light they're not like the stars the inner planets are really small most outer ones aren't small at all giant jupiter has rings that aren't easy to see giant saturn has rings that are plain as can be then giant uranus and neptune and small pluto the last one of the planets that orbit around the sun [Music] q is for quiet it's quiet out there remember in space there isn't any air without any air you can't have any sound everything's quiet without air around you don't make a sound if you fall on the ground [Music] and if there's something you want to say radio's the only way believe it or not bob i'm anchoring the gfo module maybe just a little longer drilling hole than it was at the cape [Music] [Applause] r is for rocket so tall so high like a skyscraper that can fly [Music] s is for satellites going around taking pictures of the ground showing clouds that come together helping us predict the weather in these and many other ways satellites help us nowadays [Music] t is for twinkle of a little star how we wonder what you are up above the world so high like a diamond in the sky in the daytime we have one it's the nearest star our sun [Music] u is for universe all that we see the earth that's home to you and me the sun and moon and planets too the comets that come passing through the stars that are so far away that form our galaxy the milky way on and on the universe goes and where it ends nobody knows [Music] v is for vacuum that's just empty space away from the earth there's no air any place we call it a vacuum but it just means out there if you want to breathe better bring along air that's what spacewalking astronauts do but that's for the next letter we're coming to w is for walk the space walking you do when you're out of your ship then you have a fine view the clouds are white and the ocean's blue you can see the whole world is that something you knew but you're so far away that no one there sees you [Applause] x is for the x-15 it flew higher than airplanes usually do it rocketed to the edge of space and then it glided back down to earth again [Music] y is for yellow the color of a star is that a color you thought stars are did you think stars were only white well i'm afraid that you weren't right there also are red stars and white stars in blue the colors are different but perhaps not to you so the next time you have a star in sight remember it may only seem to be white [Music] z is for zero zero g which stands for zero gravity this happens when astronauts orbit around they don't feel the pull that they feel on the ground astronauts float and so would you and anything you brought would too and so with zero gravity you've gone from letters a to z you've learned the colors of the stars you've looked at planets like earth and mars you've heard a rocket's roaring blast and watch the satellites go past you've seen a swirling hurricane without the howling wind and rain and so with letters words and verse you've looked into the universe you've seen that most exciting place and had an alphabet of space [Music] wow i'm sorry about the rhyming i was you know when i watched it at least the first part of it you know i was i scrubbed through it and i was like oh cool yeah there's some cool footage here nasa footage and it's a novel idea i didn't realize they were gonna be rhyming so my experiment with the next reel 35 wasn't so great um because it is incredibly brittle i mean it just falls apart um and i can't tell if this is nitrate or not um normally there's something that is written like here but i can't really tell so i might have to yeah i might have to test this um so anyways then i i set up another reel but it's all like 80s um trailers and i'm very much afraid that if i show them to you one you might be like eh two um i might get slammed with copyright hammer so uh we're gonna try uh later uh later this week maybe i'll do some more 35. that's not stuff like that it started off with a 1 800 collect commercial on the reel i got very excited about that but um then it just became regular trailers all right so uh let's join pat as he explores his city enjoy [Music] not much to look at pat novak wouldn't agree as far back as pat can remember he's known this street it has many warm memories for him he'll be sorry to leave it pat's family will soon be moving his father and mother are looking for a new place to live they like their apartment but with pat and annette getting bigger they don't have enough room mrs novak studies the newspaper ads while pat's father locates the addresses on a map of the city here's one that looks pretty good 421 north avenue three bedrooms newly redecorated north avenue yeah that's good for location okay let's have a look at that dad where are we on the map um right here there's our block that little space are all these other squares whole blocks right now here's where we are right here and there's our neighborhood this is downtown right in the middle of everything with the great big buildings here's the river and right here are all the factories that may be a bit too much to take in just from some lines on a map but pat is having a chance to get to know the city a little better [Applause] the novak family goes exploring every weekend looking for a new place to live leaving their own neighborhood they travel into parts of the city pat and annette have never seen [Music] with all the traffic it takes a long time to get from one place to another now there's the way we really ought to travel and see this city pat is quite right from here you can see the whole city and the different parts that make up a city here is the downtown section the business center crowded with buildings and people here are the factories and workshops of the industrial area here on the waterfront is where the city began hundreds of years ago for the city grew up as a great port in the ocean trade some residential areas places where people live are scattered about here there are luxury apartments near the downtown area and smaller homes near the factories farther out are larger residential areas and surrounding the city are the suburbs where people live with more space around their homes each of these areas commercial industrial residential and also recreational provides something the people of the city need these different sections are joined by a network of streets and highways rail lines rapid transit systems and bus lines that carry people and goods around the city during the week when he is working pat's father must travel all over town repairing business machines because many people would like to have their businesses here the downtown center is very crowded this makes land very expensive the buildings rise upward so that large numbers of people can work on small parcels of land one building may provide working space for thousands of workers as many people as might live in a small town the city's businesses depend on skilled repairmen like mr novak to keep their equipment working properly [Applause] far below the streets are crowded with people and though mr novak may not see them sometimes in the crowd mrs novak and annette are here on a shopping trip annette enjoys shopping downtown she loves the excitement looking in shop windows seeing the first run movie theaters and just watching other people most of the largest stores are in the downtown area because until recently the central location made it more convenient for people from all over the city to get there now mr novak calls his company for his next assignment like the streets that crisscross the city the telephone lines also tie the city and its business together mr novak's work often takes him into the industrial areas the city's workshop where most of its factories and warehouses are located it's not nearly so crowded here because factories need lots of space they are usually built where the land can be bought more cheaply than downtown but industries are always built along railroad lines large highways or waterways so that goods can be shipped in and out as cheaply and as quickly as possible this is an ocean port so many of the city's industries are located near the harbor inside of the downtown area much of the city's early industry developed but as land in the city has become more expensive and better highways have been built many manufacturing plants have moved out around the edges of the city into the suburbs in the factories mr novak visits city people the factories need thousands of workers with skills and experience in many kinds of work the people of the city also provide a large nearby market for the goods they produce in the factories in their search for a new place to live pat's family visits residential areas in all parts of town this neighborhood near the industrial section has some appeal for pat's father because it is near many of the plants he visits during the week awfully close to work pretty good price too i know but there's gonna be noise of those trucks all day long and look at the dirt coming out of those factories maybe that's why it's cheap i guess you're right [Applause] the novak's look farther out in the suburbs around the edges of the city here they find newer homes with more green space and more quiet streets newer schools and stores pat thinks he might like that although it doesn't seem as exciting as the old neighborhood mother and dad would prefer it too but only trouble is i was figuring out how much the payments on that mortgage would be that's a lot and for dad there are other kinds of problems as well look how far we are from here see this way down to here could be an hour and a half more to get to work every morning that's the expense so though it would be nicer to live out here it would cost more than they think they can afford and dad would have to work longer hours because of the time it would take getting to and from work the residential areas pat's family visits are different in many ways but in each they look closely at how well their basic needs will be served they want stores nearby to make shopping convenient in the suburbs they find new big shopping centers though they will have to drive to them in other neighborhoods they will be able to walk to the nearby stores they want a good school near their home and they want police and fire protection good hospitals and other community services [Music] and of course they are concerned that there be other children for pat and annette to play with this is the neighborhood where the novak's finally find the home that seems to meet their particular needs like many family decisions this one was a compromise the new home is not too far for mr novak's work but is located further out in the old neighborhood pat and annette are already getting to know the neighborhood kids they learn there's a playground only two blocks away and the ballpark is nearby too for millions of people the city is a way of life here they find the greatest variety of interesting things to see and do [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah yeah um yeah that dad man he's like a character actor and i cannot think of anything that he was in where he wasn't like a brief appearance um if anybody knows i mean some of you recognized him um he certainly appeared a lot of stuff when he was older than when he appeared in this but i can't yeah i can't place
