so hello i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where for some reason i don't have a lot of light i need to work on that um anyways uh we're watching old 16 millimeter films and that last film was some stock footage from coronet that they taped together and put in a can and they put the letters ats on them i have no idea what this film is related to beyond the content which tells me that it's uh maybe it's about colombia maybe it's about how coffee's made i'm not sure uh speaking of coffee we love coffee here and you can support us by buying uh coffee at known insects in the world destruction of many crops by grasshoppers has been known to man since ancient times understanding the grasshoppers habits has helped us control this pest one reason we study the grasshopper is that its body is a good example of the basic structure of all insects another reason is that its life cycle is typical of those insects that develop to the process of incomplete metamorphosis these characteristics are also found in the grasshoppers relatives the mantis the cricket and the katydid let's look first at the basic body structure of the grasshopper like all insects it has a head thorax abdomen and three pairs of legs on the head of the grasshopper we notice the antennae and the eyes all insects have antennae and use them in feeling and smelling the grasshopper like most insects has a pair of compound eyes these eyes are made up of many six sided parts known as facets here magnified many times their normal size compound eyes enable the grasshopper to see in almost all directions without turning its head close to the compound eyes are smaller eyes called oscelli these simple eyes help the insect distinguish between light and dark like many other insects grasshoppers feed on plants eating rapidly they tear away at the plants using their strong jaws at this rate we can see how quickly a swarm of grasshoppers can destroy a field the grasshopper uses its four legs to hold the plant it eats altogether it has three pairs of legs the six jointed legs common to all insects the hind pair are large muscular legs that are used for jumping some kinds of grasshoppers travel by using their wings wings are another body structure common to most grasshoppers and to many other insects another structural feature of insects is their breathing apparatus like all insects grasshoppers breed through spiracles small openings along the thorax and abdomen at the end of the abdomen are the over positors or egg placers of the female grasshopper with the ovipositors the female bores a hole in the ground to lay her eggs a single female grasshopper may lay from 25 to 100 eggs usually in the autumn here are the eggs the first step in the grasshopper's life cycle a life cycle of incomplete metamorphosis next the eggs hatch in the spring watch the ground carefully to see the newly hatched grasshopper or nymph emerging the nymphs resemble adult grasshoppers they have huge appetites and eat so much that they soon outgrow themselves this has happened to the nymph on the right as the nymph's body outgrows its hard outer covering this covering the exoskeleton splits and a larger nymph emerges this process is called molting and occurs five times in the grasshopper's life cycle let's watch this molting process once more with the action speeded up out comes the nymph and left on the dandelion is the empty exoskeleton the hard outer covering insects that resemble the adult upon hatching and go through several moltings illustrate incomplete metamorphosis we have seen that the grasshopper is typical in structure of all insects having a head thorax abdomen and three pairs of legs we have seen that its life cycle is an example of incomplete metamorphosis we have seen that it can cause much damage to man's crops by studying the grasshopper we become more familiar with one of the most common examples of the world of [Music] insects that's great so let's see we'll add this to the list uh protein gemini and abdomen all these uh different pronunciations or older pronunciations of things it's kind of interesting to see how they pop up um robot robot as well uh all right it's time to watch something uh we've got set up on the telecini right there behind me this is a film transfer machine that allows me to go to the stacks in the back pull a film and set it up and show you um i pulled two previous films prior to this one of which i actually had screened earlier in the year and one of them was a disney film which is too bad disney educational films are actually a lot of them are really good like they're very well done but it's disney and i am just i'm just not eager to bring that monstrous uh mouse down on me so this is uh another film that i pulled i mean that's what's so great it's like a pool of film like no i can't show this go to the back pull another film pull another film you know so um that's why i'm happy i'm back in the archive so anyways this is jealousy i won't be your friend hmm i'm not getting the audio sorry about that this occasionally obs just freaks out so anyways here we go ignore microphone which caused this crazy feedback loop so i apologize for that uh this next film is a short one called the audition and it's about someone i think it's about someone who's auditioning for a play or is it hello hello anybody here is there anybody here you're late but no matter please take your place on the stage uh i'm sorry i didn't mean to inconvenience you but i uh i didn't see any lights from the outside hey i i can't see here hey could you hit a light or something yeah thanks a lot hit the lights just when i was going up the stairs and i i tripped over those you may sit down and begin thanks am at the right place you may begin wha what am i supposed to do i i said what am i supposed to do uh i mean i i should have a script or something you know to uh to do the or props or something i can i can kind of get into what's going on here uh what's happening hey who's out there is anybody out there is that it what is that all you do now you listen to me i i didn't surprise anger what else do you do well what kind of a part is this look i'm not so sure i want to can you do love yeah yeah i uh i suppose i can do love pretty well i see here scarlet is that supposed to be love no that was that was just supposed to be a little joke it wasn't very funny however listen i i've i i really wanted to tell you how much i've loved you and and how much how much i've wanted you and and how hey cause she listen she's not reacting she's not responding she's not doing anything she's just standing here i can't do anything if she just stands there hey hey wait a minute hey wait a you would call it but i definitely enjoy it it's of a time um and i have quite a few attend a lot of them tend to be a christian uh religious in nature um but uh i think i've shown a lot of films about milk and this one is the only one that purports to be um looking towards the future of milk um so here is um milk in the computer age enjoy good morning good to see you up and about it's 7 a.m here it takes field trip today jeff yeah we're going to a dairy hey mom how about making some of those chocolate chip cookies today well we'll see jeff better hurry if you're gonna walk with susan this morning is this the day for your field trip to the dairy uh-huh walking to school with jeff today if he's on time goodbye girls bye mom bye mom wait a minute we're going to a dairy today down to the mall that's a little bit later on bye dad bye mom see you later [Music] hey sue you ready for the big field trip i guess what's wrong sue we're going to the country it's going to be great look jeff it's just that i'm trying to get my computer project ready and the science fair is friday i don't see how it's been all day and a dairy is going to help that are you kidding we get to be out of school all day and all you think about our computers give me a break jeff all you guys want to do is goof off [Music] welcome to the gregerson dairy farm good morning mr gregerson i'm mrs doyle thank you for having us out glad to have you i haven't been to a dairy farm since i was their age well things sure have changed since i started we've become a lot more efficient in the last 20 years we can melt four times as fast as we used to and when you have this many cows that's very important you might want to note the ear tags and the numbers that's the way we identify them and keep track of them and know who they are all through their life what kind of calves are these these are holsteins that's what we raise on our farm but there are other breeds commonly used in dairy such as guernsey jersey brown swiss and air shark now i'll show you what a full-grown cow looks like wow cows are really big for your average holstein that's about 15 times what i weigh just as you need the right foods to grow strong and healthy cows need good foods also in order for her to give the best quality milk possible she is fed about 65 pounds of feed per day and drinks about 15 gallons of water i guess you should say someone with a big appetite eats like a cow not like a horse well in return for all she eats a cow will average 25 quarts of milk a day in terms of the containers you receive at school that's about 100 you're right that's as much milk as i drink in a month mr gregerson is that speed right there in those stacks well that's only part of it this is a nutritionally balanced mixture that is specially blended for what the cows need to stay healthy i've heard that dairy farming is really modern now don't you use computers somewhere well as a matter of fact you're right young man do you use computers now computers what kind it's a special dairy computer connected to a small business computer can we see it well i was just about to take you the milking parlor show you our modern equipment and how the computer figures in say dad there's something up at the maternity barn the kids might be interested in seeing we have a newborn calf up there well having a cat effect um giving milk that's when she starts giving melt the minute she has a calf from then on she starts to give milk maybe we should move on to the mouth parlor now and let this cow take care of her new calf before she can be melt the cow goes through a cow wash much the same as a car would go through a car wash this is to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness the cows come into this parlor twice each day to be melt morning kathy then we wash your utter this time we worship and dry it then the machine is attached the machines are much faster than milking by hand this is another way to ensure a pure and clean product then from there the milk goes down into the pipes and is carried on into the milk tank room never being touched by human hands this is our digital readout we enter the cow's number and this tells the amount of time and the amount of milk each cow gives and then is fed into the computer all the data from our milking machines is fed into this computer and then stored in memory that proves it computers keep track of just about everything remember the collection pipes we saw but in the milking parlor these are the same pipes bringing the milk into the holding tank the holding tank then in turn has a refrigeration unit that cools them out quickly to keep it fresh and pure like this one and taken to the plant morning greg morning francis good to see you he'll take it to the plant quickly with a sample of it and it'll be checked in their lab and the other sample he takes is checked at the cooperative lab all cooperative members have their mouth checked the second time to ensure it's fresh and purely before it's frankincense sold i know my students and i have both learned a lot thank you again for your hospitality thank you thank you you're more than welcome and i'm sure you'll have a good time at the processing plant too hi welcome to the processing plant hi kids you're just in time to see us unload a tiger hey you're the guy from gregerson hi kids good to see you again this truckload of milk has been tested and approved by our laboratory before it can be pumped into our cold storage tanks the temperatures are maintained between 35 and 40 degrees and constantly monitored to assure freshness now i'll show you our lab here we check each load of milk that comes to us from the dairy farm this is our main processing room here is where we pasteurize the milk by heating it to a high temperature this is to ensure that no unwanted microorganisms are present in the milk that we drink how long does the milk stay hot just long enough to complete the pasteurization process as a matter of fact this is the only time that we don't keep our milk cold as soon as it leaves our hot holding tubes is pumped into our cooling section where it's cooled down to 34 degrees now the milk is fed into this centrifuge which spins at a high rate of speed until all the cream which we call butter fat is forced out at this point we standardize the milk to skim low fat and to whole milk can anyone guess how we do this i bet that since each of those has a different amount of cream butter fat butter fat that you use the computer to put the right amount of butter fat back into the milk exactly and now the milk is homogenized you mean it's set to homes not yet homogenization means that the milk is blended so that is uniform throughout now before i take you over and show you our filling operation let me show you our cottage cheese room and there's where we make our ice cream [Applause] hey look i bet that that's where the milk is put into the containers we make our own gallon jugs here in the next room like everything else they are kept completely sanitary and as you can see they are covered from the moment they are made until they are filled and capped [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so [Music] see susan my mom said she might make some chocolate chip cookies you want to stop in and see well okay thanks mom the cookies are great yes thank you you know susan it seems to me you had a pretty good time today yeah well i guess it did turn out to be pretty interesting you know i think it takes a really big person to admit that jeff drink your milk [Music] 1982 um i think i have another uh film from that time period maybe just around that time it's uncle jim's dairy farm which is the third version of it and i think i've shown it but it has um john cusack in it um and uh it's you know it's the same premise it's like going to visit the dairy farm although i think with that one it's not a class trip i think he's actually going there for the summer uh and learning about the process but uh this one a lot of that was talking about the dairy and the hygiene and that's something that um my friend rick palin was telling me that a lot of these manufacturing films related to food and also factory tours were all related to uh trying to reassure the public that look how clean our process is how hygienic it is um this is you know early 20th century like we're gonna tour and you can see every aspect of how we're measuring and we're calibrating and everything is pure and um you won't get sick from it and it's high quality and all these things that we're doing what's interesting is supposedly in the 90s they stopped doing factory tours and i don't know if it's just because they realize like you know what american public doesn't care about hygiene anymore there's other things that we can be spending our resources on um thankfully there are still some places you can do factory tours um jelly belly is one such place in um and i recommend i've been to two jelly belly factories but i recommend going to the one in um california north of uh san francisco that one is straight up awesome one in wisconsin uh not so much it's basically you just drive around a warehouse and they show you videos not not nearly as good um but yeah big fan big fan of factory tours and you know for the reason of the manufacturing and the assembly and all that stuff um in the free samples of course uh well thanks everybody for tuning in today it uh as always it's been really great um we've seen over see how many films have we seen in
