do so so so that was awesome um hi i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show uh where we show old 16 millimeter films and that one was from a uh friend collector who uh has collected home movies and other types of films over the years and um at first i didn't know what it was and i was like oh it's a christmas party i'm like wait a minute that's a dreidel wait a minute that's a menorah um so uh yeah it's it's uh it's pretty awesome um this is why i like home movies i like the it's like a treasure hunt well not a treasure hunt it's like an archaeological dig where you unearth something and you look at it and you're like what is that like what's the context where does that go and unfortunately i don't have any contact of information i don't know where this was i don't know who these people were um but they were celebrating hanukkah i don't know when it was um so anyhow uh i've got set up on the on the scanner a film and i'm just going to go ahead and give you a warning um this might have clowns in it so brace yourself uh it's called it's been it's labeled on the canned circus train but i don't know what the name of the film is so enjoy foreign [Music] workmen set strong wooden ramps up to the car doors so the animals can be unloaded workhorses are the first animals to be unloaded well good morning what a fine bow come on fella it's time to go to work that's it easy does it the horses will help unload the heavy wagons now the elephants are unloaded their railroad car is specially built it is longer and higher and much stronger than any other circus train the elephants are glad to leave their car just listen to them grumbling about the ride [Music] these elephants come from far away india indian elephants are easily trained and are willing workers circus elephants are called bulls the bulls are guided with sharp pointed sticks called hooks [Music] the bulls are ready for work and off they go to the circus lot down out of the cars come more animals a sacred bull from india llamas from the high andes mountains of south america a zebra from the wide grassy plains of africa and camels from the high plateaus of china animals from all over the world are carried on the circus train circus people call these animals lead stock because they lead them to the circus lot wagons are rolled from the flat cars down a sloping chute to the street the shoot is called a run the heavy baggage wagons are moved away from the train by strong pull-away teeth one by one the wagons are pulled along the flat corners the polar guides the wagons to the end of the train [Music] a rope is hooked to the wagon and wrapped around a snubbing boat to keep the wagon from rolling too fast down the run one by one the wagons are pulled away and hooked together tractors will pull long strings of them to the circus loft [Applause] [Applause] the early morning hours are filled with many sounds as the circus travels to the lot there are signs drawn on poles with chalk to guide the circus people to the lot [Applause] on the lot everyone is busy men and animals work together to build the circus tents there are big heavy rolls of canvas to be unloaded and hundreds of stakes to be driven deep into the ground most of the stakes are driven by machine [Music] before the center poles are pulled up they are threaded with pulleys and ropes and big iron bale rings to hold the canvas top the big top or main tent of the circus is built on a framework of poles the king pole is the first center pole to go up it is held in place by guy ropes work elephants pull the center poles up into the air up they go slowly steadily the elephants pull these long heavy poles into the air now the central framework is ready for the canvas the men have been working hard since daybreak and are getting mighty hungry the cook tent is the first tent up on the circus lot willing hands help set up the tables and benches the men are glad to see the blue flag going up over the cook tent it tells them a meal is being served they stop their work long enough to eat their breakfast circus workers eat two meals each day they have a late breakfast and an early dinner [Music] [Music] circus animals get hungry too many bales of hay are used every day to feed them all the circus animals have arrived on the lot some you can see others you can hear can you hear the lion [Music] there is still much work to be done bundles of canvas are now moved into place this bull is a good worker he uses his trunk and feet to unroll the heavy canvas so the men can spread it out many workmen are needed to prepare the canvas for the big top some of them tie the canvas to the bail rings others lace the large pieces of canvas together the canvas is almost ready to be lifted workmen are setting the side poles listen to them as they work do the hole shoot it move along up goes the big top as the quarter poles lift the roof of the tent guy ropes are pulled tight to stretch the canvas roof over the framework of poles the foreman directs the work with a chant hit it hit it hold it now downstairs hit it next when the seat jacks are set and the side walls are hung the big top is up this electric generator wagon will light the circus ground it is easy to see why this tent is called the big top it will soon be filled with circus performers and the people who come to see the show the ticket wagons are pulled into place the heavy work of the elephants is done the bulls enjoy a well-earned rest they have worked hard since early morning all the animals are now in the tents waiting for the show to start the circus lot is now covered with tents the big top the menagerie and the sideshow face the midway force tents work tents dressing tents and the cook tent fill the backyard the midway is the front door to the circus on one side of the ticket wagons and the popcorn and peanut stands on the other is the [Music] sideshow starts in [Music] there will be no more while the people gather in the front yard the circus performers are busy in the backyard they're called to get ready for the show by the circus trumpet the backyard is now a busy place as the performers get ready for their acts clowns use grease paint to put on their makeup some clowns paint funny colored designs on their faces others cover their faces with plain white makeup funny wigs of bright colored hair are a part of every clown's costume the clowns pretend to talk and tell funny stories in the circus show but actually they are not making a sound the animals are also costumed for the show many are covered with bright colored robes everyone takes his place to be ready for the grand entrance spectacle [Music] so the boys and girls who are still looking around the menagerie tent had better hurry the show is just about ready to start ladies and gentlemen [Music] so [Music] so [Music] break one second [Music] all right i see what the problem is um sorry sorry about that um but not sorry to show imagery of clowns i mean come on it's time that we reconcile our long history of clowns i know that they have caused psychic damage to some of you emotional damage but all right so as something as a palette cleanser let's watch the life story of a snail enjoy this is a fresh water snail snails are part of a large group of animals called mollusks mollusks are invertebrates this means that they do not have a backbone like you do snails can be found almost everywhere in the world they live in the oceans they live in freshwater rivers lakes and ponds and they live on land to photograph the life of the snail we will use an aquarium as a pond in an aquarium it is easy to observe the habits and characteristics of snails the most striking part of the animal's appearance is the spiral shape of its protective shell inside the animal's body twists in the same spiral pattern of the shell some snail shells are both cone-like and spiraled they are also of many sizes and colors the shell has an opening through which the animal extends or pulls in its body here the body is coming out of the shell when fully extended the body is partly outside and partly inside the shell outside is a large flat muscular foot on which the snail moves at the front of the foot is a head which has a brain tentacles eyes and a mouth the tentacles and foot are especially sensitive to touch two to three inches per minute is about the fastest a large snail can move most snails move more slowly movement is caused by a wave-like rippling of the muscles on the underside of the foot here another kind of snail moves along a special gland in the snail's foot secretes a slimy track on which the animal glides the track dries and can usually be seen after a snail has passed notice the wave like forms in the dried track on top of the foot and behind the shell is a hard plate like form when the snail withdraws into its shell this part of the foot seals the opening like a door and protects the animal's soft body most snails are vegetarians and eat nothing but plants some are scavengers that eat dead and decaying material why would this make them useful in your aquarium living algae or pond scum found on nearly all underwater surfaces are the main source of food for snails when eating the snail uses a file-like tongue called the radula hundreds of hard sharp teeth on the surface of the radula tear the food into small bits here is the radula of a different kind of snail these are marks left by the radula on the slimy surface of the glass after a snail has eaten this radula has been removed from a snail so that you can see the ribbon of tiny teeth now let's look on the inside of the snail shell here you will find most of the body organs the mouth stomach and intestines of the digestive system the heart for circulation of the blood the gills for breathing and the anal and kidney outlets for the removal of waste products from the body land snails have a single lung instead of a gill for breathing all of the body within the shell is enclosed in a sack-like covering of flesh called the mantle the mantle also produces the shell the shell grows only around the edge of the opening this is the only place where the mantel is attached to the shell a lime solution secreted by the mantle hardens and forms the new parts of the shell here are the lines that mark the rings of new shell growth up under the shell and just behind the head is a kind of pocket called the mantle cavity water which flows into this pocket brings oxygen to the gills and flushes away the waste products of digestion here you can see waste products being flushed from the mantle cavity most snails have both male and female reproductive organs therefore each snail can produce eggs from which new snails can develop before reproduction can begin however two snails must make bodily contact and fertilize each other's eggs the pond snail attaches its eggs to water plants rocks or other underwater surfaces the eggs are deposited in a jelly-like mess these are attached to the side of the aquarium each egg develops a snail if it is warm young snails will hatch in as little as five days as soon as a snail hatches it begins to feed the snail grows rather rapidly soon the shell hardens and darkens like the adult by eating algae and other plants snails help to control the amount of plant life in their water community snails likewise are kept from becoming too numerous by being eaten by fish or other animals thus no one organism becomes so abundant as to endanger the lives of any of the others we call this the balance of nature as cold weather approaches the snails body processes slow down and the animal prepares to hibernate it crawls into a hole in the bottom of the pond withdraws into its shell and becomes inactive during hibernation the snail's heartbeat and breathing are carried on more slowly there are over 80 000 kinds of snails land snails are common in tropical climates or in other moist areas the slug is a close relative of the last snail you saw it is also a land dweller the greatest number and variety of snails live in the oceans slugs also dwell in the oceans the oceans also contain a great many other relatives of the snail how do each of the mollusks that follow differ from the snail the oyster and the clam the squid which sometimes grows to 50 feet or more and the octopus with its long arm-like tentacles although all these animals differ widely in outward appearance from one another and from the snail whose life story you have just seen they are all mollusks because their internal body plan is fundamentally the same so pastoral [Laughter] so my assistant uh scanned that and he said what did they do they just shot an aquarium like that's all this film is just shooting an aquarium with a snail kind of slowly making its way across he was mad it was kind of great uh okay um i'm gonna mix it up a little bit um we've been showing some encyclopedia britannica films uh because we're of this project we're doing with them um here's one that's really great and has some celebrities that you might recognize uh this is tv news behind the scenes enjoy [Applause] why [Applause] television is our eye on the world distant historic events actually witnessed by few are broadcast on television news to 40 million americans nightly of the hundreds of news stories reported each day only about 30 can be aired on the local evening shows in new york a million viewers tune in channel 7 eyewitness news good evening i'm roger grimsby here now the news two minutes before the strange jargon fills the air in this electronic world of screens buttons marked orders and millions of dollars worth of equipment reveal but the day begins slowly quietly in the newsroom all the day's activity is generated from the assignment desk joe i want you to go to gold's office you know d.a gold's office yeah it is not the anchorman but the assignment editor who decides which local stories to cover he's in first at six am aided by his assistant and surrounded by communications equipment he controls the ever ever-changing locations of crews and reporters miles away hello there this is unit 11. okay bob i just wonder if you were uh on the way yes we're about to get on the west side let me know the assignment editor checks the newspapers eight news tickers press releases and a day book listing 40 scheduled news events he monitors the police radio then he decides which reporter will go with which crew to which story highway 5'4 melba toliver has been a news reporter since 1967 when she stood in for a striking news woman what's happening anyway no in at 9 00 a.m to wait for the assignment editor's decision she has no idea where she'll be going today bert rimmel shooting uh they're shooting sheamus and cannon and then lindsey's gonna show up at around 10 30. forty-five seven from south go and shoot it and then uh do a stand-up what time is this at 10 30. i'll give you the landing proof one of seven crews the landi crew leaves the plain inconspicuous abc building for their unmarked car in this tough city identification is an open invitation to danger once a clearly marked abc car was actually firebombed [Music] with melba they speed off to the day's first story inside a team of desk assistants keeps the newsroom running smoothly keeping track of graphics for rear screen projection behind the anchorman rushing film to the lab making a special report grabbing wire stories and taking phone tips gene demonstration at the russian council at 5 30 tonight to get stories first and fast the assignment editor has his own special sources we have uh police tipsters down at police headquarters we often will hear about a story faster by hearing it on the radio mainly i will try to get spot news if i can at all there's a fire disaster or riot or anything like that mayor lindsay actively promotes filmmaking in new york city melba's coverage of this stage story will be free publicity for the actors the movie and the city's film industry there are few scoops in television news because most organizations depend upon the same sources i didn't expect to enjoy this story but i did try to make it interesting and turned out liking it myself i enjoyed talking to diane cannon new york on several vacations and each one of them has been a joy and of course i'm in new york at the prettiest time of the year i love it here now central park is alive and the blossoms are out and spring is in the air it's really beautiful and to bert remnants uh you know ordinarily i being a reporter i don't like to believe these handouts pr notes and on famous people but i understand you're a very sharp guy very quick wit uh yes i am one of the most difficult aspects of this job is having to report a story directly from the scene it means getting there getting the story and presenting it on film very often it means the reporter must go over and over his story until he gets a good take i picked up a few bits of mrs late i picked up a few bits of miscellaneous information about this movie that might interest you number one no let me start again and there are a few bits of miscellaneous information about this movie you might be interested in first of all the title sheamus according to director tony we need a crew to go on this water main break uh on east 80th street sometimes regular programming is interrupted for news bulletins from a specially equipped flash news desk a major water main break is reported in new york city's yorkville district the break in a 48-inch main and has flooded streets in the vicinity of east 80th between second and third avenues and caused traffic in the area to be re-routed i'm bob lake we'll have complete details on tonight's eyewitness news at six the film crew usually covers four or five stories a day in their careers this could add up to some fifteen thousand the reporter is the director on the scene i'd like to make bike shop not yet not yet understand there's a water line mark over there and then let's go get crutchfire let me make some of the people in the home looking out the window how's that give me the whole home right now oh yeah medium shot log shot close-up [Music] there's always an eyewitness to tell the story when it happened what did you hear see and do i couldn't see anything from my window since there's a terrace and i went to my living room looked out and saw a river on 80th street teamwork on a tv crew doesn't always mean working side by side but trusting that each is doing his part maybe he got sucked up into the sewer i'm quite sure he is getting good shots i just wish i knew exactly where he was hey look at the fish look at this there's no fish spots a city official on the scene uh i see kretschmer uh yonder uh there why don't we walk up there and go across and stop drowning some reporters let a story like this build itself a good reporter builds the story can this make for fire fighting problems right now i understand there was a fire in the neighborhood uh this morning no problem at all uh now we got enough water pictures that we can cover any uh let's wrap it up the film rolls off to the lab and bob lape is off to another story meanwhile throughout drier parts of the city abc crews zero in on other news without their work there's no sound or action just words like a newspaper a radio story the cameraman sound man and lighting man know how to work together efficiently even in the midst of noisy demonstrations [Music] each crew sends in about an hour and a half of film every day a good television news director is coach talent scout manager and disciplinarian wrapped into one al primo selects the news team that works best together on the air policy decisions are hammered out for the executive producer and the assistant news director seven key congressional races my job is basically to provide the direction and the philosophy of the coverage the whole concept of eyewitness news has been designed to put the trust and the emphasis on the correspondent who is out on the scene the emphasis here is on communication you see on eyewitness news or any other news program for that matter is a team of people what you don't see is the real news team which is hundreds of people filming editing preparing and planning and putting together this vehicle that represents the news this man never goes on location never appears on the screen yet the producers decisions affect everything you see on the air he arranges some 30 stories and 20 commercials to fit exactly into 58 minutes and 57 seconds and he must bear the burden of killing a finished story listen um it's this shameless thing you did i've got a i got a problem tonight i got about uh four different stories involved with this uh with movies and show business oh and the vietnam thing so i'm not gonna be able to use it well then you can just use it tomorrow you think you think it'll hold yeah okay could you get very upset no not at all nine writers transform news agency stories into conversational television style a separate sheet for each story so the producer can arrange them at will [Applause] reporters like bob late usually write their own stories always hoping to read them on the air for the extra pay [Music] six editors trim down an average of 20 minutes of each batch of film to a few minutes [Applause] the film is edited to illustrate the story they work fast deciding what to keep what to throw out [Applause] once edited the story must be cleared by the producer hi john hello steve how's it going with this thing well he's got a lot of time here how do you want to cut it down how long is it it's a minute and 50 now i understand uh kretschmer had a bad cold can you let me listen to his audio a little bit please there will be one of the gates it does sound a little funny but i guess yes it'll work sound pretty good [Music] out of the building there he is fine why don't you uh let's roll on down here i love that shot of those guys spinning around yeah okay let's take this out and we're gonna be on uh yeah we'll have time i wouldn't want to own that car yeah let's use that shot right good that's good dude great story right that's nice okay um i think a minute 50 will uh sounds like good piece fine good okay stand up a minute good take care okay steve to help illustrate his stories the producer orders about 16 graphic illustrations per show drawn up by staff artists they are later photographed onto cells for projection behind the anchorman rivera was a lawyer before becoming a tv reporter he breaks with tradition in openly expressing his opinions on the air i thought we're gonna use the tape recorder uh well we're gonna try this one out uh i think it'll probably work even better okay is that new it's the wireless mic you know we're doing this oh but it doesn't look like the one i had to wear that time don't you think he's gonna recognize you i don't care if he recognizes me as long as he doesn't recognize my microphone well if he recognizes you then he's not gonna say what he wants well i'm just gonna confront them i'll say well what do you mean you bought 10 cups of coffee and a half an hour who's kidding who you bought some heroin didn't you [Music] rivera is at his best exposing serious injustice in bringing the shocking conditions of mental institutions old people's hospitals and drug-ridden slums to television he has changed people's awareness and has often brought about constructive action and i know that this is true because i've personally bought it you know off the streets right and from clinics while heading back to the newsroom the crew is diverted to another story this is unique go to the itt building at park avenue i'll send you a courier okay good enough time to look for us so he can stick with us in case the thing moves that way we can just jump in the car as soon as we've got it in the can over rivera agrees with abc policy that people watching tv in their living rooms respond better to reporters who are natural i see the newsman just as being more than a conduit of information there's no reason why he has to stand on mount olympus and lecture the people as to what he's seen in cooly objective turns this is carrie vanzile can you give me the mayor's schedule tony we're going to need a curry on that too i-t-t wherever you see this movement that's what i want i want to show like like streams of humanity flowing [Music] [Applause] one two three four at this time the anchorman arrived to write their stories and go over the script the vietnam package is incredible the producer briefs bill i've got it all broken down if i give you a little flight plan with uh the angle i want you to cover in an amount of time and rp's and the whole works breakdown that's fine all right and irons out a point with anchorman roger grimsby uh i don't know that's on tape on the producer's orders stories are polished and changed graphics are photographed on cells more film edited [Applause] camera crews from rival tv stations converge on the scene as traffic on park avenue's block [Applause] [Music] the courier arrives to get the first roll of film [Applause] as he speeds it back another is quickly because there's loaded reason to get hurt [Applause] rush to the newsroom a desk assistant speeds the film to the lab it will be ready in only 40 minutes the producer has numbered the script sheets a desk assistant sorts the copies one for the associate director the anchorman the director the audio man the producer the basis of everything now the script is copied onto teleprompter roles in large type easily read by the anchorman [Applause] the director and associate director check every second of the script's timing what's the def online 52 commercials are on 33. one film change the film from the demonstration has been developed then it will be edited and taken to the studio projectors back before six to write his story geraldo rivera has left his camera crew at the demonstration to shoot more action on camera two hello my bigger pardon cello one it's on stella one limbo okay at 5 45 all is ready and bill beutel joins roger grimsby for the trek down the block to the studio i suppose i guess it's time i think we can fill in half an hour see guys don't mind it today but when it's raining it's miserable it's okay thank you chainsaw yeah roger starts it off with two three three four bill three five five six seven seven eight eight nine ten you did this on purpose i'll work in on page 11. i'm gonna work me in here at eleven try your thirteen 38a 38b 38c 38d 39 bill 39a that's terrific steve you do act like a lieutenant commander full commander three broad streets here we go okay stand by quiet [Music] the six o'clock report in color with roger grimsby bill beutel and the eyewitness news team good evening i'm roger grimsby hear now the news clifford irving has been subpoenaed to appear in a los angeles courts the producer watches anxiously as the show ink on paper images on film comes alive in the hands of the television director and the personalities on screen with split second timing the director picks shots from 16 screens directs the floor manager and three cameramen unlike national news shows this local show is live inside mistakes cannot be arrested in that area and caused thousands of dollars worth of damage bob labe covered it has this report bob bill this was a very stubborn problem one that city water supply crews had not licked fully four hours after it began the pipe almost 100 years old losing tons of water into the street and nearby basements the nursing homes parking lot with both cars and trash cans awash in the sudden time men around the mayfall during the film report the producer has time to warn bill of an impending change yes i told you never call me here you don't think that we ought to make that the first demonstration store instead of the one that we do have number five [Music] roll 30. five four three two one and even if it is as mr kretschmer said earlier the cleanest block in town now the city says that block on east 80th street will be closed indefinitely to traffic due to the damage done the pavement bill thank you bob 68 of the precincts have reported and it appears that standby cameras are ready to tighten up on bill in the erp because of the latest film reports from the itt demonstration the script must be changed in mid shell after making the necessary changes the producer sends the story with a desk assistant down to the studio floor during a commercial break [Music] would you run it up now prompter we're on we're on page five now but uh why don't you i should just come up to page eight and i'll do page five uh oh seven eight is in the script we'll come up to page nine beautiful yeah we stand by to take camera two in san jose you earlier about the protest against the war along park avenue that turned into some violence gerald rivera went to cover it he's back now with this report geraldo bill with anti-war sentiment running as strongly as it does here in the city there was never any question that the most recent escalation of the fighting in southeast asia would cause renewed demonstrations against the war take it it was all peaceful enough with the demonstrators making the point that the same company that makes wonder bread twinkies and morton's pot pies is also manufacturing hardware for the air war then came the turning point in what had been a non-violent demonstration turned ugly the mounted police were given the order to move them and all hell broke loose i saw several of the demonstrators clubbed and dragged away and i also saw one of the mounted policemen injured by a missile thrown by a demonstrator standby take 30. [Applause] [Music] we're including five standby camera too [Applause] the demonstration was still going on when i left about an hour ago and i have absolutely no idea how many people were arrested or how many protesters or policemen were hurt but i do know that i hate that ugly war it's being fought across the world but it's setting americans against americans right here at home hope your news is good news i'm roger griffith i'm bill beutel thank you very much and have a good evening [Music] mean it you know i wonder why they can't make the tally light light all the way up instead of just a little top on the top wow geraldo that is um that was something yikes um and it's from that magic time that i love which is like 1972 1973. i think that's a magical time in my brain um i was seven six seven years old um but uh yeah that's how they used to make news um and um yeah it's it's obviously very different now um seems like nobody likes none of the local anchors actually stand behind a desk anymore they're always like standing behind like some giant um i don't know i don't know if it's chroma keyed or if it's like some sort of something and they're just standing there like holding their hands like this and you know talking um maybe that makes news more dynamic i don't think so uh and of course breaking news is it just happens like they have vans everywhere uh there is no shooting of film it's actually being streamed um it's being broadcast from the vans um and i don't know what's the point of having a van at a darkened uh courthouse when a trial happened earlier in the day and someone's there at the courthouse talking and behind me is the courthouse it's like well so that was like five six hours ago um what's the point anyhow um thanks for joining us today i very much appreciate your eyeballs and your attention it's why we do what we do certainly we would be showing films to uh an audience of one myself but the fact that you guys tune in every day means a lot and so thank you for that you can hit the thumbs up button the like button subscribe tell friends about what we do tell your enemies uh and you can go to ko fi dot com slash av geeks to buy us coffee if you'd like but otherwise everybody have a great rest of your day we'll see you in july tomorrow um everybody take care we'll see you soon bye you
