hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the 80 geeks lunchtime streaming show um where we show old 16 millimeter films um that one sorry apple's going down the wrong way uh that one was a donation from a friend who i think got it from her grandfather who visited i guess he worked for some sort of manufacturing firm united states and then he visited um europe where there was also the same company and they uh he documented the working environment machinery and all that stuff um real one has a lot more women working on machinery and real too is obviously a lot of what we call uh machine porn glorious footage of machines going at it this next film is transportation and it's uh not like your traditional transportation this is for um first aid training uh specifically related to i think it's part of a bigger deal that was part of the mines safety um federal agency msha i think is what it stands for so here it is transportation [Music] the site of an accident is usually an unsuitable location for providing proper medical care it may be hazardous dirty and inaccessible for this reason after first aid treatment has been administered the injured person should be transported to a medical facility as soon as possible it is normally the responsibility of the person giving first aid to see that the patient is transported safely and without being subjected to further injury unnecessary pain or shock an important rule to remember when transporting an injured person is never move the patient until he has been examined and his injuries have been protected by properly applied dressings moving a patient is precise work it calls for close teamwork and great care in emergencies or when a stretcher is not available various carries may be used carrying the patient in the arms and the two men carry are carries that should be used only when it is positively known that no injury will be aggravated by such handling the most effective method of carrying a patient without a stretcher is known as the three-man lift and carry this method is used to transport injured persons for short distances and through narrow passageways when preparing to lift the patient each bearer kneels on his knee nearest the patient's feet on the least injured side one bearer is positioned opposite the patient's shoulders another opposite his hips and the third opposite his knees the bearer at the patient's shoulders places his hands under the patient's neck and shoulders the bearer in the center places his hands under the patient's thighs and small of the back the bearer at the feet places his hands under the patient's knees and ankles at the command lift patient the team in unison slowly raises the patient and supports him on their knees at the command prepare to rise with patient the bearers slowly turn the patient onto his side so that he rests in the bend of their elbows close to their chests with the command rise with patient they all rise slowly the team of bearers can now on command step off in any direction with the patient the important thing is that all movements must be done in unison with all members of the team moving at the commands of a leader there are several types of stretchers used to transport injured persons the army stretcher is most often used it consists of two poles held apart by folding cross pieces and covered with stretched canvas or similar material the stretcher is tested before placing a patient on it and the person testing it should weigh as much or more than the patient the stokes navy stretcher is a woven wire basket made to conform to the human body the patient can be strapped into it securely and placed even in a vertical position for transportation it is used primarily in metal mines stretcher boards have the advantage of light weight easy storage and simplicity in use like the other stretchers stretcher boards should be tested before a patient is placed on them a bureau of mines utility splint stretcher is a very sturdy and useful stretcher that can be constructed inexpensively in any plant or mine carpenter shop in an emergency a satisfactory stretcher may be improvised with a blanket brattus cloth or similar material and two poles or pieces of pipe to prepare to lift the patient onto a stretcher each of the four men kneels beside the patient on one knee the knee nearest the patient's feet one man kneels opposite the patient's shoulders another opposite his knees and the third and fourth facing each other at his hips the man at the shoulders places his hands under the patient's neck and shoulders the man at the knees places his hands under the patient's knees and ankles both men at the hips place their hands under the patient's pelvis and small of the back at the command lift patient the bearers raise the patient taking care to keep his body level at the end of this movement the patient should be supported on the knees of the three men on one side if the patient is suffering neck back or hip injuries he is lifted just high enough to slide the stretcher under him and not to the knees of the kneeling man the fourth man places the stretcher under the patient again on command from the leader the fourth man places his hands in position to support the patient and on the next command the bearers lower the patient to the stretcher when the patient is secured to the stretcher the four bearers take positions at the head the foot and on both sides at the center of the stretcher on command all bearers stoop and grasp the stretcher and raise it together on the next command the two bearers in the center shift one hand toward the front of the stretcher and support this end while the man at the foot turns around to a marching position on command the bearers step off with the stretcher in unison whenever an injured man must be transported it is important that the handlers or stretcher bearers move together and as gently and steadily as possible to prevent further injury unnecessary pain or shock so there you go um there's others in that series but there's some fake gore um which it's obvious it's fake door but it looks semi-realistic and so it might be a problem maybe one day we'll just do a gore show to show all the gory footage that i have um uh this next film i have set up on the on the telecini that's behind me which is a film transfer machine um which converts a film to video and then we digitize it and stream it live um and because we've been able to get back into the archive we can just go and pull films from the back films that we have not digitized yet so um this is kind of exciting to be able to show this stuff because some of this stuff hasn't been shown in quite a while maybe not in the 21st century at all so here it is sharing economic risks [Music] one afternoon at the home of the jackson family when bill jackson came out to hop on his bike hey betty my bike's gone the broken chain told the story the bike had been stolen neither betty nor mrs jackson knew anything about it and the situation was serious he needed the bike to deliver his papers and besides the loss there was all the extra work of trying to fix his old wagon and he had to hurry or else he might also lose his job all of us run the risk of losing income or valuable property such a risk is called an economic risk bill's father takes care of his car because the car is as important to his job as the bicycle is to bills mr jackson is a salesman his job is valuable to him and to his family and the risk of losing it is another kind of economic risk he decreases this risk by being prompt reliable and industrious yes there is much we can do to decrease the many economic risks we face every day the risk of a fire can be decreased by careful housekeeping the risk of an accident can be decreased by obeying safety rules and the risk of illness can be decreased by following simple rules of health such as proper diet we can decrease these and other economic risks but we cannot entirely remove them bill kept his bicycle locked but still he lost it that bike was worth a good 30 dollars it wouldn't be so bad if all 10 of these boys had agreed to share the loss if any of them lost his bike then each boy would chip in only three dollars instead of one boy losing thirty dollars thus they would share the risk of losing one of their bikes actually bill's risk has been shared in a more practical way the bicycle is listed in this inventory of the personal property of the jackson family mr jackson has covered the risk of losing this property by insuring it with an insurance company an insurance company is a business organization through which many people share their economic risks an insurance agent advises people about the many risks they face and how they can share them through different kinds of insurance we notified the police as soon as we knew the bicycle was missing and bill and his friends have been on the lookout for it all week but we can't find a trace of it all right george you're just signed as proof of loss thank you the inventory helps to establish the proof of the value of the loss now mr jackson signs a proof of loss statement ordinarily the insurance company will pay an amount equal to the present value of the property adjustment george i've got the new policy here to extend your auto insurance for another year the insurance policy is the contract by which the insurance company agrees to assume a certain economic risk and to pay the policy holder if a loss occurs this policy provides several kinds of protection it covers the car like bill's bike against loss or damage by fire theft or other causes in addition bodily injury liability protects mr jackson against claims which might arise if anyone should be injured by his car and property damage liability protects him against claims for damage his car might do to other people's property the premium is the amount of money the policyholder pays the insurance company in return for this protection on this policy he pays an annual premium that is the full amount for one year's protection mr jackson first insured the automobile the very day he bought it and to keep it insured he renews the policy every year there you are dick check for the year's premium well thanks george and tell bill not to worry we'll make a settlement for the loss on that bike very soon fine then bill really believe in insurance most people do believe in insurance the system by which many people share the losses on individual risks property such as a bicycle or an automobile or a building may be insured against many kinds of losses for instance the factory of mr jackson's employer is insured for any loss which might result from storm or flood or from fire insurance of course does not reduce the risk of damage or loss of the property but it does reduce the financial or economic risk involved who can insure property only a person who has a financial interest in their property mr jackson can insure this house because he owns it on the other hand he could not insure his neighbor's house because damage to it would not cause mr jackson to lose any money and the purpose of insurance is to cover losses financial interest in property is called insurable interest hello martha hello dear i hope you didn't forget to see mr ellery on your way home no i signed the claim for bill's bike and picked up my auto insurance too [Music] and i want to talk to you after dinner i think i'm going to take out some more life insurance life insurance is a family's most important insurance because it protects them against loss of income through death of the person who supports them mr jackson's earning power his ability to work and earn money is his most precious possession to provide money for the support of his family after his death mr jackson has wisely taken out life insurance one of his policies provides for the payment of a lump sum one thousand dollars in case he should die another policy provides for regular monthly payments to his family the money will be paid to beneficiaries named in the policies in this case to mrs jackson if she is living when mr jackson dies otherwise to be shared equally by bill and his sister betty the cost of life insurance depends upon the age of a person when he takes it out for the one thousand dollar policy which mr jackson took out ten years ago he pays an annual premium of twenty four dollars and eighteen cents a new one thousand dollar policy will cost him nearly thirty three dollars a year because as he grows older the risk of his dying becomes greater and the cost of any kind of insurance depends upon the extent of risk involved if bill were to take out a policy today the premium would be much lower while grandfather jackson would have to pay a much higher premium since a man of his age is expected to live only a relatively short time grandfather who is retired draws part of his income from a different type of life insurance he has an endowment policy on which he paid premiums for thirty years and which now returns him an income of 55 dollars a month [Music] this type of policy is a means of saving money as well as a method of securing protection against risk most life insurance policies in addition to providing protection have some savings features each of mr jackson's policies has a cash value which increases each year if he should need money he could turn in the policy and receive this much cash or he could borrow this much from the insurance company and pay it back later with interest without reducing his insurance protection and this policy has another savings feature it is a participating policy so mr jackson participates or shares in the insurance companies earnings each year my dividends on these policies are going up look at this letter from mr ellery i've been letting these dividends accumulate with the insurance company to increase the total value of the policy instead i could tell the company to apply my annual dividends against my annual premiums and so reduce the amount i have to pay each year that way i'm sure i can afford to take out more life insurance one evening not so many days later the subject of insurance again came up in the jackson home when bill went to the door he found it was the insurance agent mr ellery they had been expecting mr ellery to come and discuss the new life insurance policy which bill's father had decided to take out but the first thing mr ellery had to show them was not a new policy but the result of an old one a check for thirty dollars covering the loss of bill's bike bill was delighted at what he considered his good luck but it was not so much good luck as good business bill has a brand new bike because his father understands the value of protecting the family through insurance and the bike is real proof of a workable system for sharing economic risks [Music] so that film was a little shrunk um and because of that i had to hold my finger on the film so that it would go with the little sprockets so that it wouldn't roll i mean i obviously missed some but um this is so this is what happens is you can see there's um some film thing across my finger it's what we do at 80 geeks you know we have all this expensive equipment but sometimes we just gotta use one of our fingers um yeah there you are this one was interesting uh this one is made for i feel like this is made for uh people in the navy who are hiring civilians to work for them and this and so during world war ii there was a big obviously a big jump in the amount of civilians that they had to employ because you had so many people deployed in other parts of the world so this is i think it's trying to introduce to the potential employer like how you do this and how you present the job in a way that's successful for both of you that's my gut feeling when i and more government office workers to perform services vital to the preservation of our nation and our free civilization every day hundreds of new employees like these are being added to our office forces people of varied types background education and experience how will these beginners turn out will they become efficient conscientious workers or in a few months will situations like this be occurring say best do you know how long you've been in here no and i care less told the boss i had a headache say you've got stalling down to a fine art yeah well you're not so poor at it yourself the time you can take making up a requisition or will this happen i'm quitting saturday getting married no not that i just can't take it here i don't like it i never did i knew the first day i came that i wasn't going to like it what can a supervisor do to prevent poor work bad morale employee dissatisfaction how can we develop efficient loyal contented workers so essential to our wartime activities that's a question of vital importance let's begin our consideration of it by taking another look at these new employees and doing a little thinking about them in the first place let's realize that employees of people human beings with likes and dislikes desires and ambitions feelings and emotions common to all of us another thing to remember is the importance of first impressions they exert a tremendous influence in our lives first impressions are lasting and difficult to overcome this emphasizes the importance of our first meeting with new employees for new employers are naturally under high nervous tension which makes them keenly sensitive to impressions favorable or unfavorable this sensitiveness gives us an ideal opportunity for creating favorable and lasting impressions now here comes a new employee she's just left the personnel office and is on her way to the office in which she is to work as she walks along she feels ill at ease everything is so strange a flood of thoughts crowd into her mind she wonders if she'll be able to do the work is she competent to work for a great institution like the navy department perhaps she's making a mistake maybe she'd better call the whole thing off and go home let's leave mary and go into the office to which she's been assigned here is a supervisor fully aware of his responsibility and his opportunity expecting the arrival of new employees asking himself how can i get our new employees to look upon me as their friend as being sincerely interested in them and their welfare how can i make them feel at home in their new surroundings how can i bring them into an understanding of their duties so they will develop proficiency and enjoy their work how do you do your mistake or is it dinky dink we're glad to see you ms dank we've been expecting you i'm mr burkstadt b-e-r-k-s-t-a-t how do you do mr berkstep first i think we'd better get rid of your coat and hat we can put them right here now won't you sit down and be comfortable thank you you must be tired from your trip yes i am a little and coming into a new office like this makes one feel sort of sort of out of place yes it does you know it's something like school days when we started in a new school and didn't know anybody remember how strange and difficult it all seemed yes i do but we soon got used to it but i'm sure you're going to like your job and the people with whom you'll work suppose we put down the first two steps in introducing new employees to the job first give the new employees a cordial greeting and second show your personal interest in their welfare well now let's talk a little bit about your new job what kind of work have you been doing oh i work as a stenographer in a store for my father just uh general stenographic work anything else well yes for a while i worked on the couch and did a little bookkeeping oh that's good there'll be some statistical work attached to your new job here and you'll find your experience will be very helpful you've become associated with one of the most important institutions in the world today engaged in the task of backing up the armed forces of the navy in defense of our possessions our institutions and our way of life you're going to work in the office of the assistant secretary of the navy in the division of personnel supervision and management which is responsible for the development and administration of the personnel program of the navy department now one part of the personnel program is the in-service training of employees that's our job here we are responsible for the coordination and administration of all in-service training for civilian employees your job will be keeping records of printed materials which are distributed to various activities to help them with their training programs now only by keeping accurate records can we be sure that these materials are being sent to places where they'll do the most good now your job may not sound very important to you but it really is so is every job in the navy from that of a messenger boy to that of the secretary of the navy because we all work together as one great team only teamwork will make us successful as perhaps the personnel office told you your hours on duty are from 8 to 4 30. there's a time sheet like this on the desk by the door let's see i put down here the time i arrived and here i put down the time i leave at the end of the day that's right and you'll be paid on the 4th and 19th of each month unless payday falls on a sunday or a holiday in such an instance you'll be paid on the following day your check will be delivered to your desk don't have to worry about going any place to get it now uh remember there'll be a five percent deduction for retirement benefit that means that from your regular salary of sixty dollars for each payday they will be deducted five percent or three dollars now deducting three dollars from sixty dollars leaves 57 is that what i'll get every payday yes except your first check will be just for the days you've worked up until the first regular payday oh i see and another thing you won't receive your first check on the next payday but two or three days later you will receive a supplementary paycheck you see it's necessary to have supplementary checks because the personnel office won't have had time to get your name on the regular payroll oh i understand and like the others you will have a half hour for lunch what time a lefty from 12 to 12 30. if for any reason you can't get to work on time or if you were taken ill teleport me as soon as possible after the start of work at eight o'clock in the morning yes sir now here is the telephone number of the department and the branch through which you can reach me and here's another thing you understand you are required to wear your temporary identification badge all the time you're in the building later you'll receive a permanent badge with your picture on it what happens if i forget my badge then it will be necessary for you to stand in line at the visitors registry and be entered like any other visitor that means you'll be late getting to the office the amount of time you lose will be charged against your annual leave minimum charge is 15 minutes now there's something else that i want to show you this tells just what we are to do in case of an air raid alarm one remain within this room quietly two stay out of the corridors three shut off all lights motors now in case you were injured or taken ill during working hours report to me immediately yes sir we will arrange to secure first aid treatment for you at the dispensary or arrange to have you go to one of the ladies restrooms now have you any questions about the things we've been discussing this morning is anything uncertain or hazy in your mind no i can't think of anything now well if any time questions occur to you please feel perfectly free to come to me thanks i will now let's pause to add a third point tell the new employers about their work give them all of the information needed in the daily routine so that the new employees will understand the general operation of the office now let's have a look around the office all right thank you it'll help familiarize you with your work as the new employee is being taken around the office the supervisor points out the various types of work that are being done at different places in the office a little explanation of what different groups are doing helps a lot in making the newcomer feel at home as occasion arises the new employee is introduced to other workers as far as possible the tour of the offer should be planned so as to end near the place where the new employee is going to work this gives us two more points to add to our list acquaint the new employees with the office introduce the new employees to fellow workers in the office both steps are vitally important in getting new employees off to a good start your mistake is where you were to work now i'm going to introduce you to miss smith she's been with us five or six years and really knows her job she'll show you the work that you're to do and how to do it i miss smith miss smith i want you to meet miss mary deck ms dank this is miss jane smith how do you do mary how do you do i'm very glad you're here i've been expecting you for a couple of days and now ms dink i'm going to leave you with miss smith she'll show you what we want you to do and uh miss smith at lunch time will you have one of the girls show this beg to the cafeteria yes i'll be glad to and i'll see you again this afternoon before you go home just sit down here mary i want to talk about your work while mary is getting started on her instruction let's add step number six introduce the new employee to the instructor and give the instructor a good build up so the learner will have confidence in him how are you getting along with your work ms dank well i don't know i see i have a great deal to learn don't you worry about that you'll soon catch on by the way do you know how to get home yes on the connecticut avenue bus if you'll walk to the west corner of the building you'll have a departmental employee's handbook there are several things in it that we talked about this morning i think it'll be a fine idea if you took it home with you and read those sections i'd be glad to i'll mark the sections for you if you'll read them over you'll remember the points much better now is everything clear any questions no i think not well i'll see you in the morning step number seven check questions about the material you read in the handbook last night no it's all very plain just as you would tell me fine now here are some portions of the handbook that you want to be familiar with for instance these sections that i'm marking under employment regulations and then you can start reading about employee organizations on page 47 uh have you been assigned to an indoctrination class what's that it's a course of instruction on the material in the handbook one hour a day for six days if you haven't been assigned no i haven't well then i'll arrange for you to attend one of the classes you'll start next monday and you'll find it very interesting well i'm sure i will well i'll see you again this afternoon well miss smith how's miss dank getting along well i think she's getting along very well here's some of the work she's done this afternoon i agree with you ms denk is making very good progress well i'm glad to hear that i feel assured that miss dink will get along all right from now on that's fine well ms dink you've been with us a week now and i think you've made fine progress i hope you're beginning to feel at home oh yes i really am everything coming along all right is there anything that's bothering you the reason i ask that is that awful little things come up that can be easily ironed out at the time but if not corrected sometimes become serious no mr burkstaff there isn't a thing you've been grand to me from the first if anything ever happens i'll sure tell you and so ends our new employer's first week on the job beginning when filled with fears and forebodings she walked down the corridor and was welcomed by an efficient supervisor who thoroughly realized his responsibility for getting new employees to look upon him as their friend and of making them feel at home of developing them into efficient conscientious contented workers now let's recall the steps which the supervisor followed in introducing the new employee to the job first give new employers a cordial greeting remember the importance of first impressions second show a personal interest in their welfare third tell them about their work give them all the information needed in the daily routine fourth acquaint the new employees with the office fifth introduce them to fellow workers sixth introduce them to their instructor and give the instructor a good build up seventh check up remind encourage and keep on checking up by following these seven steps we can be assured we are doing our part in starting new employers on the right track to be of real assistance in the important work of the navy department i have a bunch of raisins in my mouth sorry that's gross i'll do this off camera um yeah boy that sounded like mike wallace didn't it really did and you know mike wallace did uh the narration for shy guy back in the day that was in the late 40s so it's possible totally possible all right this next film i love these films these nasa films um this is one of many films that was made that was kind of explaining to the public and to uh lawmakers what the plan for the apollo mission was going to be uh and with animation and you know like the step-by-step process to get uh to where they were going to land men on the moon so here's project a little apollo [Music] the time is 9 34 a.m may 5th 1961 cape canaveral florida high above atop this redstone rocket alan shepard waits five four three two one zero [Music] yes the clock had started not only on this nation's first manned flight into space but it had started on a new age in man space exploration within three weeks president kennedy had charted our course the landing of men on the moon [Music] before the end of the decade this is the moon man's first stop on his way to explore our solar system to get there and return successfully before 1970 is the primary objective of nasa's project apollo a project that represents the greatest most intricate mobilization of government science and industry ever attempted outside of war an immense scientific program in which the united states will invest some 20 billion dollars before it is [Music] achieved but before men ever stand on the moon many technical hurdles must be overcome the steps remaining parallel the steps undertaking the development of aviation project mercury put us through the kitty hawk stage in space our second step project gemini the gemini spacecraft has fifty percent more working area inside than the mercury spacecraft has the schedule flights to begin in 1964. this modified titan ii with a thrust of 430 000 pounds will hurl two men into orbit for periods of a week maybe longer [Music] using propulsion units they will rendezvous dock this experience is an essential step toward project apollo and the moon [Music] its most urgent engineering challenge development of a launch vehicle capable of hurtling some 45 tons of men and material to a point two hundred and fifty thousand miles away more powerful than anything produced in the united states or russia to date during the apollo program nasa will use three different launch vehicles saturn one saturn 1b and saturn v saturn one is a two-stage launch vehicle its first stage has a total thrust of one and a half million pounds saturn 1b is also a two-stage vehicle however its upper stage contains more than twice the power of the saturn one second stage the saturn v is a three-stage vehicle it has a booster thrust of seven and a half million pounds enough power to put 80 mercury capsules in orbit or to send the equivalent weight of two freight cars to the moon the apollo spacecraft consists of three modules the command module is the basic unit of the spacecraft it carries three astronauts houses the life support system guidance system and the navigation and communication system the service module carries a propulsion engine for trans lunar flight the lunar excursion module is the only portion of the spacecraft that will land on the moon each phase of project apollo is keyed to one of the three launch vehicles during the first phase of the project the command and service modules will be launched into earth orbit these flights begin in calendar year 1965. [Music] in the second phase of the project the lunar excursion module will be added to the spacecraft in orbit the astronauts will detach the lunar excursion module and will rendezvous and dock with it [Music] in phase three of the project nasa will use a new concept for assembling the saturn v in a vertical position assembly will take place in a building over 50 stories high here apollo and saturn 5 will be assembled [Music] a crawler transporter carries the space vehicle and its launch umbilical tower to the launch pad when all of the preparations have been completed the final objective the journey to the moon will be attempted here's what will happen [Music] two and a half minutes after liftoff the second stage ignites immediately after this the launch escape system is jettisoned six minutes later the second stage burns out now the third stage places the spacecraft in an earth parking orbit once this is accomplished the third stage shuts down at this position in the earth orbit the third stage engine reignites propelling the spacecraft into a lunar trajectory reaching escape velocity fairings are jettisoned the astronauts reposition the command and service modules with the lunar excursion module on route the crew will have many tasks to perform if mid-course corrections are necessary they will fire the service engine putting their spacecraft on the proper trajectory their journey to the moon will take three days the astronauts will use the propulsion system in the service module to slow down to lunar capture speed they will enter a circular orbit approximately 100 nautical miles above the moon's surface [Music] sometime later two of the men will crawl into the lunar excursion module known as the lamb when all is ready they will detach the lamb from the command and service modules the command and service modules remain in lunar orbit now they make their approach positioning their craft in the proper landing attitude first they will make a reconnaissance pass [Music] if all looks well they will start their actual landing approach the rate of descent and flight path will be carefully controlled before either of them sets foot on the moon the lamb will be prepared for re-launching their pre-launch check-off list will be monitored by the third astronaut left in lunar orbit on the moon the two astronauts will photograph and sample the lunar surface apparatus will be left behind to transmit scientific data back to the earth [Music] all told the astronauts will explore the moon for about one day [Music] when the time comes to leave they will fire the liftoff engine leaving the base of the module and all unnecessary equipment behind their launch must be time to permit rendezvous with the command module docking the two explorers return to the command module once inside they will detach the lamb leaving it in lunar orbit when everything checks out the astronauts will fire the service module for the return trip to earth before entering the earth's atmosphere the astronauts jettison the service module and prepare the command module for re-entry into the earth's atmosphere [Music] parachutes will now gently lower the command module [Music] getting men to the moon will take time it will happen in this decade establishing our preeminence in space exploration the clock has already started [Music] i love how utterly ominous the soundtrack made this it's kind of part of that like late 60s we're on the verge of something something great something horrible i don't know and music is making everything seem scary and ominous it's really uh really quite nice i mean it's kind of like a soundtrack to uh your 1999 ad and starts off with this really ominous music and it takes place where um they shot uh i think the final shot of uh uh planet of the apes so there's just this ominous like whoa this is bad not that this is significant it's just there's something about to happen that's not good um anyways i love again the
