so that goes on for a long time um and i figured that you would rather see films that have a soundtrack um anyways that was gilly the salamander uh part of this collection of cornet raw materials that i got so this one didn't actually have a soundtrack with it um uh anyways i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the ivy geeks lunchtime streaming show um let's see uh we watch old 60 millimeter films to our delight and horror and uh this next film is part of an a series made by encyclopedia britannica about art and the different concepts behind art which involve color shading um and texture so here's texture [Applause] [Music] art is made of a number of things of color [Music] a form of line [Music] of things that are dark of things that are light of surfaces rough and smooth [Music] smooth surfaces rough surfaces [Music] surfaces everywhere on everything [Music] the cat has a surface all his own [Music] not like a slippery worm nor a fuzzy caterpillar so [Music] the earth and the creatures that come from the earth the sea and the things that come from the sea all have surfaces each is different none the same [Music] it is fun to discover the feel of things it is fun for you and fun for me and fun for all of us surfaces may change sometimes the change is slow sometimes the change is fast [Music] nature changes surfaces in many ways [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] man also changes surfaces in many ways he makes things rough [Music] he makes things smooth he changes surfaces to meet his needs to make them the way he wants them to be [Music] [Music] with chalk crayon or paint you can make surfaces look shiny and smooth or fuzzy in art you discover new surfaces put them together in your own way make them say what you want them to say [Music] i love it uh i also love that the soundtrack was so nuts it's like just fiddling on the keyboards i'm sure someone some jazz musician in chicago was like i got this gig doing uh doing a soundtrack for uh an educational film on texture that's pretty great um [Music] i have a collection of uh christian films i've been collecting them in general i tend to lean towards the crazy insane ones uh whenever i can the ones that are uh truly awful or deal with uh things like the apocalypse uh armageddon end of the world those i like because of a trauma being traumatized as a child um but i also end up with a lot of just kind of generic tales from the bible type stuff and this is by family films which was an educational filmmaker that did not only um kind of sitcom uh versions of uh you know contemporary families dealing with christian issues uh but also they did some of these straight out of the bible stories and um this is one of those this is birth of the savior so it's a lot of people in robes and probably coral music um color is not so bad on this one but this is birth of the savior [Music] two thousand years ago israel once a proud and free nation was suffering under the rule of the mighty roman empire taxes had to be paid to the roman emperor and the people of israel hated the publicans who collected these taxes for the romans more than that they strongly resented having to pay such heavy and unjust taxes but anyone who dared to rebel was doomed to bear the marks of the roman whip or the scars of the roman sword now and then there were some threats and uprisings but the romans ruled over the land with an iron fist and there was no way to escape the cruel power of the conquerors however throughout the land there were some devout people who studied the words of the prophets hoping that the day was near when the promised messiah would come and save them from their sins but there were also many others who hoped that the messiah would unite them in overthrowing the romans how much longer must we suffer the crimes of these cheating lying romans how much longer must we pay taxes to their publicans look at this how much longer must we suffer the roman whips and swords why must we submit to these barbarians why must we pay taxes to them what can we do we must bear this oppression with patience for we know that god has promised us a messiah a savior the prophet isaiah has foretold for unto us a child is poor and to us the son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall be called wonderful counselor the mighty god the everlasting father the prince of peace as if voicing all the thoughts of everyone in israel the young man asked the question that lay uppermost on their minds what when will this messiah come when no one knew the answer not even a devout young woman of nazareth who would soon become the wife of joseph the village carpenter no mary did not know the answer but even now the angel of the lord was to tell her of the great blessing god had in store for her hail thou that are highly favored the lord is with thee blessed art thou among women she was startled and troubled by the angel's greeting and did not understand its meaning do not be afraid mary thou hast found favor with god and behold thou shall bring forth a son and shall call his name jesus he will be great and will be called the son of the most high and the lord god will give him the throne of his father david and he will reign over the house of jacob forever and of his kingdom there shall be no end how can this be since i have no husband the holy spirit will come upon thee and the power of the most high will overshadow thee therefore the child to be born will be called holy the son of god and behold thy cousin elizabeth in her old age is also to become the mother of a son for with god nothing shall be impossible behold i am the handmaid of the lord let it be to me according to your word to the south in the hill country of judea an elderly couple was patiently awaiting the birth of their child they knew it was to be a boy they knew that his name was to be john and that he would prepare the way for the coming of the lord this they knew because the angel had also appeared to zacharias and told him of it and zacharias had been stricken dumb for doubting the words of the angel his wife elizabeth must have learned the mission of their son from zacharias and therefore she knew that god in his mercy would soon send the promised savior but she could not have known when or of whom the savior would be born but they were to know soon for their cousin mary had hastened south even now she was at their very door mary elizabeth at this very moment elizabeth was filled with the holy spirit and she suddenly knew that the promise of the messiah was soon to be fulfilled [Music] blessed are you among women and blessed is the child whose mother you are to be but why is this granted me that the mother of my lord should come to me for behold when the voice of your greeting came to my ears my heart was filled with joy and blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the lord [Music] my soul magnifies the lord and my spirit rejoices in god my savior for he has regarded the lowest state of his handmaiden for behold henceforth all generations will call me blessed for he who is mighty has done great things for me and holy is his name [Music] but when joseph learned that mary was soon to become a mother he became deeply troubled he did not know what to do being a just man he did not want to bring any shame on the woman he had chosen to be his wife with his troubles then there came to joseph an angel of the lord bringing him the assurance that he sorely needed joseph thou son of david fear not to take unto thee mary thy wife for that which is created in hers of the holy spirit and she shall bring forth a son and thou shalt call his name jesus for he shall save his people from their sins and so mary became joseph's wife now the time was drawing near for mary's child to be born but in the meantime the roman emperor caesar augustus had ordered a census of the people of israel that meant that everyone must go to the birthplace of his parents to register for the purpose of taxation and as joseph and mary were of the house of david and the city of david was bethlehem they made the towering journey south to that city [Music] but when the weary travelers reached the little town of bethlehem they found it crowded with those who had also come from near and distant places to be registered for the counting my good man would you hold this animal for me it was necessary for murray to rest for the journey had been long and tiresome [Music] we seek shelter for the night i'm sorry but all my rooms are full we must have shelter my wife is expecting her first child to be born soon almost any time now have you no friends in the city no we are from nazareth we know of no other place to stay i hate to even suggest this but the only shelter i could offer you for the night is the stable that's the only place i have you're very kind [Music] come i'll show you the way [Music] i'm sorry there are no beds but there is plenty of good clean hay at least you'll keep warm may god bless you for your kindness i'll bring you some bedding if there's anything you need just ask for it here i leave you the light thank you [Music] joseph [Music] so in a place not far away shepherds were watching over their flock unaware that the son of god was being born in a humble stable in bethlehem but they were soon to know in a most glorious manner of the fulfillment of god's promise to send a savior to the world [Music] fear not for behold i bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people for unto you is born this day in the city of david a savior which is christ the lord and this shall be a sign unto you he shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] let us go to bethlehem and see this thing which has happened which the lord hath made known to us [Music] the shepherds found the place where the christ child was born and joseph brought them into the stable [Music] and there in the manger they found jesus perhaps not as they expected but surely as they had been told with wonderment and great joy these simple shepherds knelt down and worshipped the savior of the world who had been born in a lowly manger and not only they but the world was to know that on this night the prophecy of isaiah had been fulfilled for unto us a child is born unto us the son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall be called wonderful counselor the mighty god the everlasting father the prince of peace [Music] jesus um yeah um fascinating film you know and it's it's it's a thing so and that's what's interesting is uh some people don't realize that there was a vibrant uh religious film market like these there were companies that made these films and they sold them so they were you know they weren't doing it for charity they were actually making um a lot of films uh so much so that there's a educational screen uh kind of trade journal that has like had in every issue a section about religious films which had advertising and um reviews and you know how to efficiently show films in a church um all that stuff so it was a big market uh and there was even a um it was a filmmaker who did a baptista films who actually like teamed up with ampro i think or devry no maybe mr bryan i'm kind of confusing things a little bit but they basically offered what they called the miracle projector where you know it was sold specifically to churches um so anyways that's kind of fascinating uh so i got a film on the wow never gonna get this right the telecini and i haven't seen this and the title looks like it was clipped but uh it says on the can signs and lines so let's see what we got enjoy real traffic rules [Music] without rules driving would be a weird uncontrolled horror [Music] coming [Music] controlling the movement of traffic with rules and laws makes driving orderly and safe as long as everyone follows the rules and is considered of others we can relax and enjoy driving ignoring or breaking rules is doing the unexpected and suddenly you become a threat to others who assume you are a safe driver [Music] did you see that right there and the white line they were trying to tell you something [Music] signs and signals and marking lines help us avoid hazards and avoid being a danger to others they make it easier to get where we want to go the people who make our signs have given modern effort to designs which tell us quickly what we should know it's a simple language based on shapes picture symbols [Music] and colors signs must say the same thing to everybody no matter what language they speak no matter where in this world they're driving red is the color for danger ahead it's the stop or don't color please don't or you'll be sorry yield the right-of-way don't continue until the coast is clear don't crossing the red line is dangerous don't n o means no u-turn no right turn no trucks no no whatever you see this with believe in red when it says stop or don't or no it's only used for danger yellow is the warning color to make us aware of conditions ahead that are hazardous unless approached with care picture maps to forewarn us [Music] use your gears and save your brakes yellow warns where the unexpected can be trouble signal ahead so be ready to stop if the light is red the sign puts a picture in your mind a special shape on the left where you can see it when edging out from behind another car it works with yellow lines on the road yellow lines separate cars moving in opposite directions [Music] a broken yellow line means passing's okay if the other lane is clear but a solid yellow line on your side means dangerous to pass no don't try it because you won't be able to see far enough ahead to pass safely [Music] a solid line on the other side of the broken line means you can pass but cars coming the other way can't [Music] a double yellow line means no passing in either direction [Music] so no matter how urgent your hurry or how slow the car in your way if you start to pass when you shouldn't well i wouldn't [Music] now it's okay pass yes no yes no no no yellow is to ring an alarm in your mind that alerts you to hazards ahead [Music] orange is the construction and maintenance color orange warns us of temporary road conditions that are quite different than you would normally expect orange warns us to be alert for the unexpected black and white are the rules and regulations colors not here it's a rule rules rules at signals and stop signs we should stop behind behind the white line white lines mark pedestrian crossing areas and turning lanes and traffic lanes white guides cars going in the same direction yellow separates opposite directions together they mark rules and spaces as easy to follow as the nose on your face is [Music] where to how far green is the color for where you are and where you want to go which way this way how much further to go oh green is for information related to road maps if you know where you're going green will help you get there your way if you need to phone lose the tone for signs of services [Music] blue signs help you have a pleasant trip [Music] blue for when you need help brown is the guide color for parks and recreation areas when your foot loose and fancy free brown signs will help you enjoy your vacation this particular shape is reserved for recreational signs other shapes are reserved for special purposes this shape always means stop this shape always means yield this shape is for warnings of road hazards or construction hazards school shape for school signs the lines mean where the kids cross and they have the right of way only for no passing nowhere else signs and lines speak a universal language so many other countries use the same ones we do many are used worldwide if you were driving from russia to kuwait or from helsinki to bangkok you know what this means right and if you saw this in ecuador and this in rwanda oh the sign says no [Music] service signs are a little different than ours though just as easy to read in countries using what is called the united nations sign system but they're warning signs use a red triangle instead of our yellow diamond the symbols are much alike all countries are cooperating towards international uniformity of colors shapes and pictures but some local differences persist like slippery signs in france or one-way signs in austria or germany and would you understand these there are still signs that don't speak to all if you saw this in italy or germany would you know it means no parking and this means no stopping in morocco iceland and many other countries it means no parking and this means no stopping in belgium this means no stopping or parking on the left side on odd days and on the right on even days surely you know this means the same thing in other countries in many countries this means no bicycles so what does this mean all bikes must follow this route it's coming but we don't yet have complete international uniformity anytime you don't understand a sign or a line it's up to you to find out exactly what it means it's your responsibility as a driver to know ignorance is no excuse i didn't see alert considerate of other drivers and they know their colors shapes and picture symbols their signs and lines [Music] [Applause] [Music] so oops just ended uh yeah so that was a gm film all right well that's good to know i mean this is why we watch the films because we don't know what what things are so signs and lines um so i'm feeling pretty strongly that today we watched 1700 films because i didn't because i was off-site yesterday with my uh houston friends i didn't get the log what i showed yesterday but we're bumping right up against 1700 so congratulations um i'm so happy that you know we've been doing this since mid march of last year and uh very much appreciate your eyeballs and your attention and we should all celebrate some way i don't know how um i have clients coming so i can't really be drinking and then i have a show tonight with the science museum so i can't get really drunk after that so i'll figure out some way to celebrate if you guys can figure out some way to celebrate and and hopefully this next film uh this is an inside out film uh from the 70s which was shown on public television and then distributed to schools it always deals with the emotional aspects of being a kid and many of the things are open-ended i'm hoping that this isn't depressing it might be if it is i'll follow up with something that will sweeten it we'll sweeten the deal but here's donna [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right george your turn last night at the fair george rode the ferris wheel with jimmy one more time last night at the fair george rode the ferris wheel with a fierce wheel with jimin donna can you tell us one is that right yeah donna your turn quite quickly queen quick quarreled on tuesday the blind students at conway have a room of their own that is called the braille room or the resource room from this room they move into their regular classrooms and are mixed with normal students any activity that is involves the use of their site for achievement or in terms of involvement themselves in the activity they find out real quickly that they can't do that sort of thing but on the other hand they also find out how many wonderful things that they can do the same as the sighted child dynasty is light and dark and she sees a shadowy outline of large objects and she can see color quite well if it's close enough the fact she can see the light helps her in getting around because when she comes to an opening of a door it looks much lighter and she knows that's where it is so far donna's glasses haven't seemed to help her in her learning situation she still learns strictly through touch and through her hearing and i think that she does her learning completely that way because she never seems to hold things up closely to her eyes to look at them as a child with enough partial sight disc our hope is that donna's glasses will correct the far sided problem if we can correct the far sidedness the retina may start to develop may we took donna to meal she was in i think it was second grade and they told us that her basic problem is an underdeveloped retina the reason for this is she was born extremely farsighted [Laughter] [Music] c7 and uh [Music] okay i can you can play on the um w the h the rde real good w h r e w h help yeah i could spell help the right let me letters let's see now we can put anything ending having e in the middle or beginning yes so you can make almost anywhere you want to you got the letters do you have the right letters [Applause] i mean what i'm very lucky today what we'll see why what letter do you need i have one that is okay i don't get these there's 16.8 point and then they give you a fraction 16 40. okay and then where's point b that's one point on the middle line now where's point b gonna be it's gonna be thirty-six eightieth thirty-six eightieths all right now you have to decide and they say which point is the lift in other words which which number is smaller oh jewelry smaller 16 40s or 36 80s 36 80 yes because the area is only half of what the 40th is i'm going to make the 40th 40th into 80s okay you may be right yeah if i was like 36 ladies that's right okay good now number 12 is your last one on this page about a book how many pages in the book it was like the basement then the handle it was real and the handle fell off they kept taking me in there and it opened this one door and here are all these things that they used to hang people on i thought you want to go back to the east coast virginia yeah oh yeah but what kind of resorts do they have back there i know one of them i know what's wrong with washington d.c okay i'll don't wanna go that wouldn't be any fun you wouldn't like washington dc oh good just give us a neat glasses i love these glasses oh um that was okay [Applause] donna has a friend named paige and paige and donna happen to like very very much the same things so therefore they spend a lot of time together [Music] she's a very independent person really she's always wanted to run with the children to go out and play with the other children we've just uh we have tried to make her independent in functioning and she has made herself independent in play in her activities in that when she wants something bad enough she finds a way to do it right here all the way okay okay good girl is that your sinker or your fastball why it's part of her world and when she runs down the yard and runs into a branch of a tree she pushes it away and goes right on by it as if well that's going to happen and [Music] don't let it worry she she can't get around like everybody else can donna has built her world around the things that she likes and these are all things that donna has chosen herself they were not we didn't make any of these decisions for her these are things that she chose that she wanted to do there there we go all that's all finished okay now what's left and lettuce [Music] [Applause] [Music] build it up this is your last chance [Applause] [Music] donna has learned to take care of herself and we tried to raise her that way because she has she will have to someday take care of herself completely donna has had to learn for instance to clean up her room not the way another child does by watching their mother but by having it explained to her and shown to her she can't learn by watching someone else she has to have it explained and when it's explained even then it isn't clear so she really has to do something to learn it she can't learn by the process of looking at someone else doing it normally she remembers things well and therefore she learns quickly but she still has to go through the actions of whatever she is learning before she can do it from a mental standpoint she has i feel every bit as much independence as another child she thinks for herself and she really doesn't want someone else doing it for her [Music] inside out is a series of programs and related materials developed and supported
