and the microphone's on hello everybody hey hey hey i'm skip alzheimer and this is the the llama family yeah oh do you want to introduce yourselves individually sure i'm lola llama yeah i'm gg lama the icon okay and i brought them into this world i'm carlos llama nice i helped uh and some of you who view who watch us from houston texas might know them um because uh uh carlos and the ladies here uh were uh running aurora picture show back in the day along with along with andrea grover a g who is not with us she's slumming in uh in the hampton in the hamptons um not having as much fun as we are no um so uh over the years i would visit houston and carlos and uh andrea and then this one came along like i think i did a show like five days after you were born if you were just a little tiny baby yeah and then i came when you were a baby too but i can't remember how old you were when i first met you you were about two or three i was there when they found out what sex you were going to be oh yeah yeah i remember you drew a diagram and uh so anyways these guys are long time family friends and they've seen uh andrea is the reason that i started touring with shows that i was like oh i can actually take these films and show them other places besides raleigh and so that's what led to all this stuff maybe geek stuff so i mean indebted to andrea in the llamas and i'm happy that they're here um so lola mentioned that her that her mom said oh uh your uncle is one in one of skip's films and i was like oh yeah i know exactly what film that is and i've shown it on the streaming show but it was a long time ago and i feel like we have to show it again uh so uh hopefully uh sean your uncle is tuned in hopefully i just met him for the first time via facetime yeah um and so hopefully he's tuned in he kind of rolled his eyes like oh no so this is definitely like an 80s mid to late 80s film uh it has that feel and this of course is during uh when there was an aids epidemic and there was a lot of concern about condoms and this is a great film because it um it talks about uh the effectiveness of condoms and also shows assembly line footage of condoms being made which i'm a big fan of so here's condoms a responsible choice yay hi no i can't talk right now any minute oh yeah he's great much nicer than jimmy no not yet but tonight's a definite possibility well because i feel i'm ready and we both like one another a lot we're both starting to feel pretty serious here he is call you tomorrow hi hi come on in you look really nice oh i'm not expecting anyone excuse me jimmy hi sue how you been long time huh guess what who's he it's jimmy we used to go out but i didn't invite him i haven't seen him for over a year now what hi donnie hearn i i thought you moved to kansas or nebraska or someplace fun out of the booth she calls me she tells me she changes the mind hey i heard there's a party going on here [Music] [Music] perhaps you're wondering why i've gathered you all here this evening you could say that you're here to make a very important point like what two's company and 46 is a crowd that's one way to put it here's another if you and sue decide to become physically intimate with each other that decision may expose you to sexually transmitted diseases carried by a lot of people you don't even know what you take the risk of exposing yourself to contact with all of don's previous partners and their previous partners as well likewise don risks exposing himself to contact with your previous partners and with their previous partners too in other words when you accept a new sexual partner you run the risk of exposing yourself to all the sexually transmitted diseases your partner has been exposed to you know this is a little embarrassing it's also extremely dangerous because one of the sexually transmitted diseases we're talking about is acquired immune deficiency syndrome a condition which destroys your body's ability to fight off disease including cancer it's a merciless killer most often referred to as aids aids according to the centers for disease control in atlanta one out of five americans has a sexually transmitted disease at any one time these diseases include syphilis gonorrhea herpes chlamydia aids or any of 30 different conditions millions of americans have been exposed to aids and now carry the virus in their bodies most of these people don't even know they're infected what are you saying we're all gonna die of aids far from it aids can be avoided just like other sexually transmitted diseases you can protect yourself go on you can decide not to be sexually active easier said than done which will give you complete protection against becoming infected through any sexual contact when you do accept a new sexual partner you can ask whether he or she has been tested for aids and if so how recently a knowledge of your partner's history and test results can improve your margin of safety and that's it don't have sex and if you do ask for a resume and medical records first no there's more if you are sexually active condoms provide a powerful line of defense against sexually transmitted diseases including aids excuse me but this is boy talk isn't it i mean they don't take the pill for us so why should we have to worry about condoms for them this is why men are more likely to give aids to women than women are to give it to men why take responsibility for using condoms just one reason to protect your health and your life what if you never bought condoms before you never bought a condom before well i tried to once but [Music] i just didn't know what kind to get there are many types to choose from some are made of latex rubber and some of animal intestines some have ridges and other features to increase sexual stimulation also they vary in price when you begin to use condoms you might start with a basic lubricated type with or without a reservoir tip after that you may want to try other types to see which kind pleases you and your partner most and remember one size fits all but even if you know what you're looking for it's still embarrassing to go in and buy them [Music] [Music] [Music] you're right it's a problem that must be overcome and here are some easy ways to do it select a store that displays condoms on open racks rather than on or behind the counter or you might buy your condoms from one of the vending machines that seem to be popping up in more and more locations or visit a local clinic or family planning center where personnel are especially sensitive to clients feelings or simply buy them through the mail okay okay we get the point i got mine right here i mean some of us knew the story before we even got here so can we just break this little meeting up and get on with our business if you knew the whole story you would not carry your condom in your wallet or the glove compartment of your new car or any warm place the best way to protect their effectiveness is to keep them in a cool dry place condoms are manufactured and tested to ensure compliance with strict government standards when properly stored they remain effective for two to three years with excellent reliability in fact the main problems associated with condoms are failure to use them at all and failure to use them correctly correctly how complicated can it be not very but here are eight key points that can make all the difference a condom should be used whenever you have vaginal oral or anal sex and it should be in place before the penis touches any opening of your partner's body open the packet gently take care not to tear the condom with your fingernails don't attempt to test it by stretching or blowing it up every condom you buy has been pre-tested testing it yourself may only damage the condom a lubricant may help to and further reduce the very small possibility of your condom breaking whether or not your condom is already lubricated you can use an additional water-based lubricant such as ky jelly as well baby oil or vaseline may weaken the latex rubber of which many condoms are made so use only the appropriate lubrication spermicides are products designed to kill sperm and so avoid pregnancy used with condoms spermicides offer valuable added protection against sexually transmitted diseases be sure to put the condom on correctly as you begin to roll the condom onto the penis press the air out of the reservoir tip if the condom has one if the condom does not have a reservoir tip leave about half an inch of it free to catch the semen smooth the surface to eliminate air bubbles roll the condom down to the base without stopping until the condom is completely in place when the penis is withdrawn the condom should be held at the base of the penis to make sure it is not left behind never use a condom more than once the contents of the used condom should not come into contact with any part of either partner's body although the chances of a condom breaking are very small they do exist should this ever happen additional spermicide should be applied directly into the vagina if spermicide is not available douching with warm water is recommended whenever you accept a new sexual partner or whenever you cannot be absolutely certain about your partner's history of exposure proper use of condoms offers important protection against aids and other sexually transmitted diseases while not absolute this protection is highly effective it gives sexually active men and women their best chance of remaining safe well looks like the party's over so what do you want to do tonight why don't we think it over come on fern i'm not using one of those what's the point i know you're on the pill can you tell me how many girls you've slept with in the last couple of years sure more or less and you know where they've been well how can i know that ever heard of aids yeah but get the message that's why we're using the condom [Music] for comments it was so good so good i love that film especially like i said the um assembly line footage of them making the condoms yeah is so wow it's so glorious i've never seen an exploding condom before no it's great i like how the guy was like look like startled it blew it up so big um all right well that was the the fun part of it so the next film we're going to watch has absolutely nothing to do with the llamas or um your uh your uh uncle sean hopefully shawn got to see it i um i saw some people tuned in some grover family people tuned in so that was great yeah uh this next film is about the library and uh i love libraries and this explains why libraries are so great and this is probably from the 50s uh so let's see if libraries have changed [Music] one day dick was going on an errand his mother had asked him to return her book to the public library you may not believe it but she also told him to hurry [Music] come on dick we're gonna play ball dick told eddie he was sorry he'd like to go along but that old book [Music] wow [Music] what a strange place dick thought you couldn't play baseball or build model boats in here huh there's some of the kids from school what are they so interested in hey what's this boats gee may i help you oh you're mrs whiting's son dick uh-huh do you like that book well i like to make model sailboats and this book has a picture of one i'd like to make can i read it can i take it home well not that one that's for the display but there's one just like it over there just a moment dick you really like this book don't you yes i do well if you were reading through the pages and found this you wouldn't like it very much would you gee did i do that now that you know how much fun a book can be would you want to find it like this no ma'am [Music] did you wash your hands let me see [Music] come along with me dick then the librarian led dick into the children's section of the library here's where you'll find your book dick this is a special collection of hobby books we made it up just for boys and girls your age these are only a few of the books on hobbies there are more on the shelf anything you want to read about here's the one you want right here [Music] there you are [Music] by the way what other hobbies do you have well i like to collect pictures of airplanes and while we're here look on this shelf a moment here you can find books about all kinds of airplanes here's the book on the latest jet plane oh boy oh dick you like to play games don't you dick sure [Applause] go ahead dick help yourself dick found out that the library wasn't such a bad place after all he found some interesting things among all those books he just needed a little help [Music] and the one who can help every time is the librarian she knows where all the different books are and she knows what's in the books [Music] other children in the library had found this out too for instance jimmy told her about some rabbits his uncle gave him so she showed him a book on how to make a home for the rabbits janet had a kitten at home and she liked stories about animals she found the book all by herself after the librarian showed her the right shelf [Music] the teacher had asked nancy and mary to find out about some famous living man and report to the class they knew that the librarian would help them [Music] the librarian asked if she could help dick again can i take this home now yes but oh dick whoa there dick dick just knew this was too good to last [Music] but the librarian wasn't going to scold him or anything she explained that there were thousands of books in the library and boys and girls were taking them out all the time the librarian had to keep track of all the books coming and going now to do this they have a card for each book on the card she could keep a record of who had the book when it was out also every reader had a card with his name and special number on it it showed him how many books he had out and when he must return them this was to be dick's card she would put his name on it and he'd keep it in his book all the time it was out but first you must get your parents permission to take books out of the library have them sign that for you bring it back and i'll have your card ready well my books oh don't worry we'll hold your books for you till you get back [Music] [Music] dick had something on his mind more important than baseball now he could hardly wait to tell eddie about it but it took a lot more than words and a piece of paper to show eddie [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] dick could hardly wait to show eddie the books he had found but most important of all [ __ ] found that the library was an exciting place a friendly place and eddie was finally convinced too the library had books that he liked it has books that everybody likes why the library is like a playground with the gates always open for you to come in and enjoy yourself why don't you get acquainted with the library after all it's your library [Music] so uh gigi you were mentioning it sounded like a horror movie because of was it because of all the strings the music yeah yeah it made it kind of intense just going to get a friend and going to the library it was like a life or death situation um so gigi you have an experience with uh a library book and uh so what happened so i went to save katrina louder yeah katrina my homie and her mom and i brought my very special i think it was like diary of a wimpy kid or something and within a day or two it was deceased because of god which is okay because fred the dog katrina's mom's dog bassett hound notorious basset hound that uh lived in this basement uh for for many years in the winter um and he pretty much eats anything he can find and so wow so what happened like when you found out that that book was destroyed by friends i was probably like a little girl having a fit but i forgive fred he's too cute to be angry at yeah i don't like fred i'm not gonna cut a mini slack that dog um yeah man the library i'm a big fan it saved my life i was i grew up in rural north carolina but we had a really good uh library in town and i would go there all the time and i would do see movies there they would show 60 millimeter films there were film workshops over the summer so i learned how to shoot films and make uh animations like simple stop-motion animations and um really something just expanded my brain i checked out many books there all the time so big fan of libraries big fan uh speaking of airplanes uh because that was one of the interests that and boats um this next film is basically talking about uh how great new high-tech aircraft are gonna revolutionize flight so yeah this has absolutely nothing to do as we know this is kind of a you know we pick and choose stuff uh the day of it has really nothing to do with anything else but here we go events of the past and present shape tomorrow our vital concern is you today's youth for our future depends on you [Music] before attempting to figure out where we're all going it is imperative for us to have a strong awareness of where we have been to untangle today's problems we need to understand yesterday this film series hopefully will in part make you aware of people places and events which have helped shape our nation and our world manufacturers hanover is commerce travel and international relations today aviation science continues to race ahead recent advances include new aerodynamic designs fuel-efficient high-performance engines and innovative helicopter technology this is a report on new high technology aviation [Music] the essence of aviation progress is often radical new designs in aircraft this is a prototype of one such aircraft design named starship ones such a configuration with small forward wings and large ones far back is called a canard instead of a central vertical fin tip sails at the ends of the wings serve as rudders to control sideways movements [Music] the small forward wings control pitch the tilt of the nose provides additional lift and stabilizes flight forward wings are adjustable straight out in slow flight swept back at high speeds to minimize drag new lighter stronger materials titanium and plastic reinforced with graphite fibers improve performance the turbine driven propeller engines conserve fuel while allowing a cruising speed of over 400 miles per hour [Music] another innovative canard which utilizes advanced materials technology is the avtec 400 this non-metal aircraft can fly six people coast to coast non-stop at 400 miles per hour getting 10 miles per gallon the outer shell material is about 16 times stronger than conventional construction materials one component takes the form of a honeycomb sandwich the resulting sections stronger pound per pound than solid steel are bonded together unlike the skin fastened over frame designs of conventional aircraft the avtec involves more than 50 pre-molded sections glued together saving weight labor and assembly time [Music] the new all composite aircraft has no metal structural components at all once the designers set the values for strength stiffness and other properties composites were blended to make materials that met those specifications because of these materials the plane weighs only about five thousand pounds a third less than similar conventional designs the key feature the canard wing allows lift to be controlled from the nose the composites improve the plane's aerodynamics lacking rivets and seams its smoother airflow increases both speed and fuel economy [Music] this canard the x-29 was built to demonstrate various kinds of advanced technology its swept forward wing for example is designed to reduce air drag and increase maneuverability at speeds close to the speed of sound [Music] the wing is of lightweight epoxy composite material providing stiffness and strength it is aero elastically tailored constructed of layered strips of various thicknesses and orientations so as to resist several flight stresses its curve can be controlled in flight to take the best shape at different speeds and altitudes and do the jobs of both up and down and sideways flaps the x-29 has an electronic control system the pilot uses computers both to monitor aircraft performance and adjust engine and airfoils the x-29 a new tool to perfect a variety of technologies extending the possibilities of flight [Music] a second focus of aviation research is lowering fuel costs one answer is a new generation of fuel-efficient jet engines the basic fan jet design is unchanged air is drawn through an inlet fan mixed with fuel ignited and the combustion gas provides thrust and spins a turbine which drives a gearbox that spins the inlet fan the new technology includes a higher performance turbine newly designed gearbox and stronger discs and blades that reach higher speeds [Music] an electronic engine control precisely manages fuel delivery turbine speed and other variables throughout development more improvements were added changes in blade twist and attachment angle as well as geometry and clearance the hot section or combustor was given special attention studies of combustion gas flow were done using tinted fluid the final design sets up an even temperature gradient with no hot spots [Music] engine reliability tests were carried out next including heating cooling and even lightning strike conditions flight tests followed the engine placed in a special carrier and flown on the wing of an ordinary aircraft [Music] in the end engines must satisfy both aircraft builders and government regulators the final certification tests include ingestion of rain ice and debris [Music] after five years of development the new fuel-efficient engine is ready for full-scale flight tests and the needs of the next decade of air travel since its invention the helicopter has undergone major changes and improvements the newest advances include a main rotor blade of graphite titanium and fiberglass giving longer life and greater lift while this rotor head design replaces ball bearings with rubber and steel laminates such elastomeric bearings work without either oil or sliding parts [Music] new kinds of testing facilities include wind tunnels for combining rotor with airframe quarrel stands for evaluating front and tail rotors and hub and shaft test stands to measure stress limits today's helicopters include a large number of switches dials and other controls making piloting very demanding in tomorrow's cockpit many controls will be replaced by computer-operated electro-optical displays tv screens that present flight data in compact visual form now in flight test this advancing blade helicopter allows speeds of up to 300 knots and can hover as well its two counter rotating rigid main rotors one above the other on a common shaft permit the advancing sides of both rotor discs to generate lift [Music] this rotor research aircraft with rotors wings and auxiliary jets is used to test new flight concepts it can fly like a helicopter or as a fixed wing aircraft with wings jets and rotors [Music] it also has the only helicopter crew escape system in the world the blades are released in sequence then rockets lift the crew out [Music] the xv15 twin engine tilt rotor is another major innovation advanced weight reducing technologies which make it possible include powerful new engines composite materials and computerized controls [Music] the tilt rotor is capable of both ground and mid air conversions between forwards backwards sideways and hover modes of flight a single switch controls the swiveling of the propellers its 25 foot diameter prop rotors allow 350 knot cruising speeds and cruise altitudes of 25 000 feet in cruise flight performance resembles that of a turbo prop plane the wings providing high lift and the rotors forward thrust [Music] potential uses include search and rescue offshore oil platform support transportation between city centers and business related tasks using helicopter mode for landing both reduces noise pollution and allows steep approaches designs now exist for three and four engine tilt rotors carrying up to a hundred people today's new aircraft incorporate advances in many disciplines aerodynamics structures and materials propulsion and controls one expert has called them computers that fly continued research is expected to lead to major new improvements in the decades to come [Music] manufacturers hanover kinds of birds and fish the world could not exist in its present form without them [Music] while insects are necessary and valuable in maintaining the natural world as we know it certain insects are harmful to man [Music] they attack the food crop he has planted and the forest he wishes to grow [Music] [Applause] they carry and spread disease endangering man's health and the health of his domestic animals [Music] [Applause] when this happens the insect becomes a pest a threat to man [Music] for many thousands of years man's only defense against the pest insect was hand-picking it from the plant or making attempts to drive it away for hundreds of years ignorance permitted deadly epidemics of insect-borne diseases to ravage human populations but as time passed man's knowledge of the life cycle of insects increased he was sometimes able to time his planting or harvesting to avoid a pest by discovering their breeding places he was able to destroy them but more effective and reliable controls were needed during world war ii the chemical compound ddt was discovered to have the capability of killing insects it revolutionized man's ability to control pests ddt prevented typhus epidemics in europe and was used extensively in the destruction of the malaria carrying mosquitoes in the tropics but ddt was not the final solution to the pest problem with the steady rise since world war ii in the application of pesticides to the environment has come the growing realization that they can be dangerous not only to the insect they are meant to destroy but to birds fish and other forms of life including man extensive study of the effects of ddt has alerted us to the dangers of the widespread application of poisonous substances to the environment but the need to control injurious insects remains the question arises how can we prevent pest insects from doing harm to us and at the same time how do we not harm ourselves and those animal species we need one answer is biological control or the development and use of non-chemical means to control harmful insects work being done with the gypsy moth illustrates the different approaches to non-chemical insect control now being investigated the gypsy moth is a forest defoliating insect it was first brought to this country in 1869 by a naturalist who wished to develop a silkworm hearty enough to survive the new england winters the moth escaped from his laboratory and because it had no natural enemies in its new environment soon multiplied and spread causing extensive damage to the forests of the northeastern united states a variety of steps taken to destroy or halt the spread of the moth over the past century have failed the young gypsy moth caterpillar hatches in the late spring it grows rapidly feeding on a great variety of leaves this is the gypsy moths troublesome stage when it actually defoliates large areas of woodland so [Music] [Music] in an attempt to haul the destructive insect scientists are now investigating non-chemical means of bringing it into balance with its environment research efforts began in the laboratory gypsy moth eggs are collected in the forest and brought to the laboratory to be reared this beginning is the most critical part of the biological control research program a continuous supply of healthy insects for use in the experiments being conducted is assured [Music] hmm [Music] one possible way of controlling harmful insects is by spreading disease among them entomologists have discovered two microorganisms that are fatal to the gypsy moth a virus and a bacterium when fed to them off larvae in the laboratory they cause the larvae to die but the laboratory is one thing the field quite another to be effective the virus and bacterium must work in the forest scientists set up experimental plots in areas infested with gypsy moths as an example of the problems faced in the forest the researchers knew that even the best spraying methods could not cover every leaf of every tree because the moth larvae could not be controlled unless they ate the virus or bacterium entomologists designed a feeding preference experiment to discover if the insect could sense the presence of the sprayed material on the leaf the results of the experiment would be used as a guide in preparing the spray to be used in the forest [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] the scientists also discovered that the virus was destroyed when exposed to the rays of the sun a material had to be found that would protect the sprayed virus in another experiment researchers mixed the virus with many different liquids and sprayed the mixture in the forest [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] after spraying leaves were collected and taken into the laboratory there they were fed to the laboratory reared insects to see if the mixture was effective in protecting the virus from the sun's rays the most effective mixture would be used in larger sprayings [Music] while research continues in this type of biological control of harmful insects other approaches are being investigated entomologists now know that many kinds of insects are the natural enemies of other kinds insects do more to keep themselves under control than man could ever do the use of natural insect enemies to control harmful insects is another aspect of biological control a predator insect is one that devours its prey a parasite lays its eggs inside another insect the egg will hatch and the young insect will feed and grow inside its host when it has grown it will emerge killing the host insect [Music] [Applause] [Music] to find out what parasites present in the forest will attack the gypsy moth cages containing gypsy moth pupae the last growth stage before the insect becomes an adult are placed in the forest by using this method entomologists found that this small wasp-like insect was a parasite of the gypsy moth pupae research has indicated that it may in sufficient numbers be used in the control of the moth researchers continue to search the forest for more parasites and predators of the gypsy moth they continue laboratory experiments to better understand the relationship between a parasite and the insect it will lay its eggs in [Music] [Music] [Music] another approach to non-chemical control of harmful insects is the idea that they may somehow be kept from reproducing the female gypsy moth is a poor flyer weighted down by the unfertilized egg she carries she tends to stay in one place to attract the male she sends out a powerful odor the male finds her and fertilizes the eggs scientists have learned how to manufacture the sex attractant of the moth they have placed the attractant in traps to find out if they are able to catch the male before he finds the female [Music] [Music] forest entomologists also think that large amounts of the attractant sprayed by plane over a forest may confuse the male moth to such a point that he will be unable to find the female it may work in two ways by spraying a large amount of the attractant over an area thus creating many attractive points the male may be unable to pinpoint where the female is or by having to fly from point to point in his search he may simply be worn out and stop searching prior to spraying researchers place male and female moths who are ready to mate in the forest after spraying they locate the female and bring her and the egg she has laid back to the laboratory they will then determine if the eggs have been fertilized and can judge the effectiveness of the sex attractant as a means of control [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Applause] [Music] [Applause] before we know whether or not any of these non-chemical control techniques will work against pest insects more research is needed [Music] but man in turning to biological controls takes his lesson from the natural world [Music] by observing seeking to understand and utilizing its intricate system of checks and balances we may achieve control over injurious insects without harming or destroying the other living creatures who share the earth [Music] foreign [Music] okay so um carlos who did you say the music soundtrack was uh well that came off of the miles davis album kind of blue but i've
