[Music] [Music] [Music] today is a high future looks bright [Music] Bart's mother and Mary's parents are confident too that the marriage will succeed because it's based on many things companionship mutual interests shared ambitions and that mysterious intangible quality which we call love and part of this love is their relationship to one another as man and woman for married good sex adjustment began when she was a very small child it's right here there of course it doesn't talk yet cry or even eat by itself it has to stay inside me too big and strong enough the idea of childbirth was made natural and normal for Mary she was happy to know that she would have a new baby sister or brother Bob's mother was a widow in spite of this she was determined that her son should have a proper knowledge of sex from the beginning she answered all his questions if no questions came she arranged situations so that he became conscious of sex when he was little Barb and his mother were always together and they had a wonderful time as he grew older he made sure that he played with other children both boys and girls and when he was older still she was pleased and proud that he seemed to fit in well with the boys in fact when he was about ten he actually scuffed that playing with girls Mary too had a normal childhood with many friends of both sexes but as the time for Mary's first menstrual period approached her mother explained about the changes that would take place instead of leaving her to pick up odd bits of startling and inaccurate information from her schoolmates Mary's father and mother got along well they have their occasion of quarrels but in general home life was pleasant natural and secure hide that at about 11:00 Mary went through a sort of reversal she didn't talk much and spent hours alone just daydreaming what's the matter with her well she's just growing up dear well hadn't you better have a talk with her well yes dear but I don't think this is the time when she wants to ask questions what I'll try to be ready with the answers mary's mother tried to discuss sex without embarrassment and to give Mary facts without prejudice or any suggestion of fear or shame at about twelve and a half Mary reached puberty around this time she found that her friends wanted to talk about the door and there she was lying in bed some of them got most of their information from up collared jokes that they really didn't understand but you don't always have a base when you go over I read the book some of them learned about sex from books but there were so many things that they didn't know do you have a deformed baby does kissing have anything to do I mean about having babies are you afraid of having a baby Mary no I'm not because after all people have been having babies for thousands of years and nowadays doctors have so many ways of making this page for Mary the fulfillment of a healthy sex life held no fears sex was not something sinister to be whispered about but it was a natural function which could contribute to the ultimate happiness of home and a family about this time Mary developed a sudden strong friendship with Lucille Williams it seemed that Mary could talk better with Lucille than with anybody they have absolutely no secrets from each other they were inseparable - Mary's mother it seemed unnatural this continual intimacy this concentration of affection on one not very unusual girl Mary darling you're keeping new seal from their dinner mother forgets the devotion she had for her own girlfriend about 25 years ago next there was a crush on Ethel Hampton senior girls tennis champion Mary seem to have a real need to be stirred up about someone it was a transition stage from the antagonism toward boys just before puberty to the next stage of falling in love with a boy soon she reached that stage her next crush was on the captain of the school football team [Music] she spent hours trying to make herself more attractive imagining herself in all sorts of romantic situations it might be a boy no but it's going to be about a boy he pretty nearly did today on the class all right bob was growing up too he knew about the reproductive organs and nocturnal emissions he also knew about masturbation but he'd read that the problem was more mental than physical he knew that the healthiest life for him was to have plenty of exercise and fresh air he liked football and the coach was a hero who could do no wrong Bob tried to be as much like him as he could his interests were mainly masculine and his success at sports made him sure of himself he could take girls in his stride just as he did games until one day when bob was 16 it became apparent that his interest in girls was getting to be more than casual hello all right yeah no I uh she's okay but I can do better than huh Kenny she's going around with Dave anyway well let him keep her well sure I could I just didn't want well so what I've got better prospects the hangout stage they'd like to be in a crowd when you're not sure how to act or what to stay you can hide your confusion in the general hubbub a girl has to look as though she knew her way around be more sophisticated than she really is it was all new and exciting and Mary was proud of her success she wanted the others to see how popular she was how about the dance with me Saturday night Oh think about it hey wait a minute what about me you didn't ask me bug boy huh but you didn't tell Jim got there first okay good see you're wrong a little popularity gives one self-confidence which isn't a bad thing in moderation [Music] I don't even know that one his name's Alan I'm worried about him he's getting so silly over the boy you could hear her on the phone I have but what worries me even more is the way she goes out dancing at Lee's juke joints you've got nothing in the head but boys boys boys he's only out Friday and Saturday night but I'm afraid you might make a little fool of himself tonight I can't keep saying don't all the time there's no you thing don't to Mary it makes her work isn't there any positive approach to this business of sex education he knows the physical fact the pattern Mon doesn't give her a healthy attitude boy I'll have to talk more to her about how to have fun with him without being silly well I guess you'll just have to learn by experience out of the past herself and Mary was learning by experience she acquired a lot of social skills and graces she learned how other people are likely to react to different situations she learnt about herself and by going with a lot of boys she found out what kind of boy she really liked most and her mother tried to help her develop sound judgment about boys not to be influenced by superficial glamour or the opinions of others because her mother never seen Chuck Mary talked freely with her by 16 and a half Mary had settled down to go steady with one boy George Palmer who was in her class at school he wasn't her idea but she likes going steady because it meant that she was always sure of having a date and she never felt left out and unpopular the parents thought George was a nice boy and they were glad to know who Mary was out with at first but after several months her mother began to be afraid that the affair was becoming too serious actually Mary and George were at the point of breaking up anyway [Music] no Yes Mother Jorge again yeah you're seen so much of him Mary but I've told you he's just a date can I have data's boys want to take me out boy yes but is it always going to be George it could get to be that way you know and I just don't think George is the one for you okay mother if that's the way you feel about it I won't see him anymore now you please leave me alone [Music] Bob's mother was having her troubles - hmm pitties daddy just getting fixed up a little with the lucky girl tonight do I have to turn in a written report Bob I don't mean to be nosy but if it's marrying again it just isn't the kind of girl I like to have you going out with look mom it's me that's going out with her isn't it and I think okay just because you're a bridge club and some of those other old Dame's runner down we're not all Dane I don't mean you you know better than that and we don't run her down okay so you don't but I'd pick the girls I take out don't write yeah I get it you do good night it seemed as though all the planning and guidance since he was a child had been a waste of time bob was going with a fast crowd and like most teenagers he wanted to be one of the gang go as far or farther than anyone else did [Music] his mother didn't know what to do if she said anything he just became more secretive and defended his friends against her old-fashioned morals as he called them she felt that somehow she had failed in his training in the meantime Mary had a new steady Stanley Brooks he had a good disposition intelligence reasonable good looks he came closer to her idea than George had in fact she thought this might be the real thing Mary senses that her mother approves of sin and this encourages her to talk to her about him but not long after Stan's family moved away and that was that when a girl loses a steady it takes a little while to get back in circulation but if you want to meet boys you go where boys hard Mary had a cheerful disposition he was intelligent healthy and attractive and she had no trouble making friends Jack Arnold was one of the gangs he had known for years he suddenly became interested and interesting it seemed for a while to be romance with a capital R [Music] don't act like an iceberg all your life look we love each other don't we [Music] now Mary began to realize what her mother had meant all these years to her own experience Mary was developing a sound ideal of what love should mean in her life it was not what Jack offered a change is coming over Bob - come on Jenny time I was getting you home oh why it's early work Jeannie work I've got exams coming up in the morning what a party pooper Bob had been to plenty of wild parties it wasn't so exciting than you anymore and life was full of other interesting things he had a career to think of he began to stay at home more really takes plugging you're going to lose out with your girlfriend don't worry bye whoa he still enjoyed parties he still took out girls a different one every week but his perspective had changed the desperate rush to find out all about sex was over in his case too early training was taking our new meaning through personal experience Mary had broken up with Jack and by chance she turned up at the same party as Bob [Music] when they met that first night both had a pretty good idea of the kind of people they really like [Music] it didn't seem much different from other dates at first but after a few weeks both knew that it was different petting was not just a form of entertainment or an experiment there was real affection and mutual respect war and more they found in each other the things they were looking for being together heightened the enjoyment of everything they did they tried to be together all the time [Music] they have their quarrels mostly over jealousy [Music] but each time they knew from the beginning they'd make up they both had a good sense of humor they both enjoyed doing the same thing because of similar family and educational background they had much the same way of looking at things they began to know that this time it was for teeths they were so sure that their love was deep and spiritual that at times a marriage ceremony seemed to be just a formality love seemed to be all that really mattered but each of them knew deep down that they wanted their marriage vows to have real meaning [Music] Bob and Mary had a healthy attitude toward one another as man and woman that was built up step by step since childhood first each of them learnt the biological facts of sex as soon as they were able to understand them second they learned about the other sex from their own experience thirdly their parents tried to help them understand the real values of sex life and finally long after reaching physical maturity they became emotionally independent of family apron strings now they're on their own [Music] do you believe their parents have done the best they could to help Mary and Bob make all these adjustments [Music] are Mary and Bob typical of our teenagers have they a sound background for marriage what do you think not everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to our lunchtime streaming show I was just looking up the year for the film that we just saw social sex attitudes in adolescents the year was 1953 and this was a Canadian film Crawley made it and then it got distributed by McGraw mcgraw-hill and the narrator Lauren Greene from Bonanza battlestar galactica earthquake I think he was in that movie anyways yes this is some of his early work supposedly this was filmed in looking at the notes I have in my database filmed in Fayetteville New York in Ontario so there's definitely some Ontario some Canadian diction or pronunciations of things that kind of some people construed as being Midwest but it's a yes it's been commented many times this is a pretty progressive film when it comes to talking about sex with kids and there was a really wonderful progressive movement in the 50s and early 60s that said look you know this is what you do kids are curious about sex and if you don't talk to them about it they're gonna do their own thing so they hear it out and have that dialogue that happened that kept going until the 70s and then it bounced back in the 80s with this new conservative movement in education and social mores people's kids still had sex but they just didn't talk about it parents didn't talk about it so much all right so as I said I'm skip of 80 geeks I collect old 16-millimeter films and I show them to folks like you and I've been doing this for more than 20 years probably 25 years now 20:20 yeah since the mid-90s I've been collecting showing stuff doing it online is kind of a new thing new ish thing what we've been doing for the last couple years but I delight in showing films to you that you wouldn't see anywhere else that's kind of the deal and trying to give you some context this next film requires a lot of explanation and it's also it's silent so if I played the sound it would just be like there it was double sprocket in film it's called time study number eight and when I first got the film I was like I have no idea what this film is really no idea it just shows people doing repetitive work over and over and over again and then it there's a time that you're supposed to grade then you go back back and forth back and forth what is this and it took talking to my mentor Rick Prelinger to find out that these are motion study films the idea is a person who does motion studies or efficiency studies is looking for more efficient ways for people to do repetitive tasks and this is a way to grade people who were doing the tasks so that you could increase their productivity it's amazing and it's also really horrifying to think about because it's basically like how can we make you more like a machine and then eventually like we figured out how to make a machine that's cheaper than then hiring you so we're just going to go ahead and do that so anyway this is time study number eight has a variety of different tasks and it's really kind of fascinating I would play music behind it because it's silent but unfortunately any music I would play would probably bring down a copyright hammer so we're gonna watch this silently but it's still entertaining nonetheless here we go sorry got lured into a false sense of I don't know repetition seeing them checking the tires over and over and over and over and over and over again really again presenting this yeah big fan of this began again it's very similar to the assembly line footage films that I love to show because it's very niche it shows a very specific task it's it's not meant for my eyes not meant for your eyes but I love it nonetheless right so speaking of the workplace we love showing what workplace safety films and this one is a general one made by Xerox it's called if you hear the explosion the danger has passed enjoy [Music] I wouldn't if I were you if you hear the explosion the danger has passed for the cause and the means went up in the blast now if you think that's true just listen to me before we're finished I'll disagree courtesy oh okay Ralph take it from the top now you take the human being not you buster Oh doubt this is my show now you take the human being here's a pretty package of brittle bones delicate organs and precisely balanced chemicals all bagged up in a sack of skin you can scratch a hole in with your fingernail market fragile as everyone knows the human being was originally engineered to live in the Garden of Eden Sun in the sky and plenty to feed on no glass in the grass no smog in the air nothing but nice soft gentle peace and quiet but the human being got himself kicked out of there for ignoring the first safety warning don't eat the apple so did the human being learn a lesson sure he did this is the way it is baby cars and trucks and we leaving toys and trains and Bumble these things poems that are big and booms that are small fires that burn and that ain't all your aching back crunching machines slicing ones to chemicals and caustics and non stick and glue sacks filed up like that tower in Pisa loads as shifty as the Mona Lisa and your aching back things that are sharp things that are dull sticking out things to wrap your skull tripperz and Tanglers and wax in the hall and ways to get tackled by another door doors and doors and doors and doors the downtime they offer could be yours light that hurts and the electric shock and horseplay [Music] horseplay that'll fix your clock did you ever feel that someone doesn't like you not really because someone gave us brains and we invented safety and the safety engineer made a science out of it look around you buddy he's been there by statistic he reduced the rate of accidents and thereby reduced downtime production loss medical expense and insurance premiums pain and disability and most importantly he saved your bread and butter by keeping you able to earn it he kept files of statistics on everything that happened including your akin back his statistics told him that the greatest single cause of work loss is back injury and muscle strain caused by a lack of knowledge of how to lift and handle materials properly but who wants to be a statistic this guy does [Music] but he proves a point the safety engineers know that three things are involved in an accident an unsafe act by an individual an unsafe facility or piece of equipment and unsafe procedures here they are the unsafe procedure by the individual the unsafe piece of equipment the unsafe act [Music] this guy needs help okay so now you know all about safety what's wrong with this picture all right so here's what a safety engineer sees an unsafe act this man is working inside the danger zone with his hands an unsafe procedure he is trying to dislodge a stuck piece with a screwdriver he should use a piece of wood or a tool of soft metal so that if the RAM comes down it won't smash unsafe equipment boy this guy is really going in this one the press has no guard he has no safety glasses he's wearing a long-sleeve shirt that could snag in the press when the safety engineer gets through making it see it depends on you and this man he's the man man the supervisor when you and I start taking dangerous shortcuts he's the one who teaches and says AHA do it right because he's the man or woman who has to investigate and make out the accident report [Applause] [Music] so that action can be taken by Department management to assure that the accident doesn't happen again now if you'll just look around you you'll see the safety engineer at work he begins with recommending safe design to protect that thin-skinned sack of bone and muscle you push around all day [Music] the safety engineer is instructor too [Music] he tells the supervisors and the supervisors tell us and our akin backs [Music] between the safety engineer the supervisor and the maintenance department safety devices are kept safe but they can't do it all and some people Josh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and by the way when you hear the explosion or the crash or the yell the danger has not best until the safety engineer says so [Music] [Music] that crazy jazz soundtrack at the end it was awesome so that was 1968 when that film came out very catchy had some great great song in there because everything that you want with a safety film a great song intentionally funny some peril although it's fake peril you know this is very much the recipe of shake hands with danger which is another amazing film that we've shown a couple of weeks ago really great okay what do we got our manner is important really are they yes yes they are more now than ever manners are important courtesy is important and this film talks about that so here's our manners important [Music] cities are built of something that's far more important than steel and brick and stone what holds a city together is a need which all men have the need for living together with their fellow men sharing their work helping each other enjoying their friendships and their companionship and since people must depend upon one another they have built up ways through the ages of getting along together our laws are one way of doing this but just as important as laws are the rules and usages of courtesy and consideration which we call good manners they come naturally where people have a high regard for each other we see good manners already not only a mouse but among children too often they may not even realize that the consideration they're showing for others might be called good manners wherever you go you'll always find that good manners keep things running smoothly paying attention to a neighbor's yard is good manners because it's considerate Zoey is going to the end of the line instead of trying to break into the middle it's only fair to those who were there before you introductions are good manners because they're friendly and help people be at ease with each other and good manners at the table make for a pleasant and comfortable meal such things as coming to the table with clean hands and face passing food properly and pleasant conversation make mealtime enjoyable for the whole family yes you see good manners wherever there are people who respect each other and want to get along with others sometimes though you find a person like Mickey Taylor who has lost sight of the importance of good manners or who hasn't realized the values of consideration for others yes dear fellow this is Nora letting the screen door slam strewing his clothes about the kitchen certainly isn't being considerate of his mother [Music] the least he could do is offer to take a message and what about the importance of good manners to guests of other members of the family you remember mrs. Norris don't you oh hello Mikey it's nice to see you again yeah it's time for one of Mickey's favorite programs and he doesn't stop to think that the set may disturb his mother and her guests it isn't that Mickey wants to be rude he just hasn't stopped to think [Music] Miki may I speak with you okay is she gone yes she is and I must say you behaved very rudely to mrs. Norris and me well she made me miss my favorite program shouldn't have turned inside out in the first place honestly Miki I don't know Claire your manners have gone too manners is that all you grown-ups ever think about yes we do think about the Miki because we've learned some experience that manners are important in helping people get along together you'll never be happy with others until you learn to be considerate of them I get along alright do you Mickey I wonder sure kids don't need manners manners are just for grown-ups I think you're wrong about that don't day you'll find it out [Music] Mickey's mother has given him something to think about he hasn't gotten along too well with his friends lately but don't need manners the next morning Mickey is all but forgotten his talk with his mother but something happens on the way to school to remind him of it [Music] maybe I should have gone around but oh well accidents will happen and later on at the playground Micky sees the ball coming toward him and he obeys a sudden impulse to get into a deal he's not a part of it starts an argument and then the bell rings to break up the game hey I didn't realize this was a clash game [Music] just before lunch Mickey gets a chance to learn what it's like when someone else's bad manners make him uncomfortable and so Mickey has quite a lot to think about during lunch especially when he suddenly realizes that he's sitting alone and he begins to wonder whether the others may not be passing him by [Music] I don't think that - me by on purpose kids don't care about manners I wish there wasn't any such thing as manners [Music] boy if I were president I put a stop to manners that's what I'd do I'd make a proclamation [Music] gives me great pleasure to sign this proclamation with it we are bashing matters forever in doing so I am following the wish of children all over the nation boy I'm sure I found manners no use at all to them or to anyone else yes there's a big crowd of children outside they demand to see you the press conference is over thank you very much for coming you ladies just one more inch president matter that's not why I'm here well I'm here because I disagree I think manners are important and here's why a few weeks ago I was appointed by the class to make a poster for the safety drive it was an important job and I did want it to be good I worked hard on it I was pretty excited when the day of the contest came but then some boy ran right through it he bumped into me and not the poster right out of my hand and tore down the middle and the whole thing was ruined for me and for the clamp he could have been more considerate and gone around us and that's why I think matters are important that's what I think too I don't like [ __ ] stuff any more than the rescue kids do but I'm Premier's just the same especially after what happened at a playground I'm the captain of the class team who challenged the fistina was it tough matching the squirrels type [Music] so so we just had me a [ __ ] it up and break into the game then the bell rang we didn't get a chance to fish boy he sure spoiled everything just as he figured nobody else matters but he upset bad manners I'm against his Proclamation what about the rest of you my bike was ruined bones lands right in my ear somebody tripped me I got [Music] yeah sorry about that game this morning oh that's alright you [ __ ] with me isn't very good at apologizing because making apologies like other kinds of manners takes practice maybe he will learn his lesson about the importance of good manners or maybe he won't it's pretty hard to tell what do you think and what do you think about manners in general do you think manners really start with consideration for others aren't really important in this modern day and age do you think boys need manners as much as girls do there's a lot to think and talk about on the subject of manners and many good reasons to ask are matters important [Music] you I forgot about the the dream sequence where the Mickey becomes president and outlaw of manners I I love when educational films go down that route well let's just see what happens but you don't have whatever the subject of our film is a case for spring fever is an example of that some people mentioned in the comments I unfortunately don't have that film in my collection but I recommend seeking it out it is features coyly who teaches a guy about the importance of Springs in his life and every time he encounters something that doesn't have Springs or shouldn't have Springs but doesn't work you hear coyly go no Springs it's really wonderfully annoying alright let's see what we got coming up let's see this next film is another niche film it's made for a very specific audience admit it's meant for first responders and ambulance drivers and it's involving a certain population of victims which are people who had larynx cancer and had to get laryngectomy so basically the Lenox is taken out there is a hole and they speak basically by Furby and more recently people would have a like a voice electronic voice box that they would use but this is a fascinating film because it talks about you know it's trying to be progressive and say like look you're gonna have some people that you're gonna run across who have this surgery and your normal methods of trying to resuscitate them mouth to mouth don't work and so this is check the neck [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey let's go to sky down alright let's go check the other guy [Music] [Applause] how is he is he alive alive yes and not critically injured but because they have failed to take a simple precautionary check the very people who have rushed to his aid may cost him his life for the accident victim is a laryngectomy [Music] oh what a cuttlefish where are you going Phyllis wait a minute you can help him all right go ahead check the neck all right yet fortunately this time another laryngectomy was at the scene like the injured man he has had a total surgical removal of his voice box the larynx he's had to learn to speak again and most vitally to breathe again solely through an opening in his throat he is one of thousands of neck breathers for them mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is useless [Music] just turn it a little will attaboy [Music] how it just is rising yes [Music] coming [Music] every laryngectomy should display this sticker what a more occupants of this car is a laryngectomy he or she breathes to an opening in the neck do not twist head do not throw water on the head keep opening clear of all foreign matter apply oxygen to neck opening only mouth to stoma is effective in addition to the sticker which is often fouled on the rear window a laryngectomy might also have this first-aid booklet in the car or in this special litter bag attached to the dashboard of his car everyone who might become interested and concerned in the administration of aid to the neck breather is urged to call for a free copy to County units of the American Cancer Society their telephone numbers are listed in the phone directory this booklet provides detailed information including a diagrammatic explanation of how neck breathing is accomplished [Music] this is a cross-section of the conventional manner of breathing air enters through the nose or mouth is carried down the trachea or windpipe then into the bronchial tubes and finally enters the lungs exhalation reverses the process [Music] in some instances of cancer of the larynx the entire voice box is surgically removed and the trachea diverted to the skin's surface a laryngectomy this surgical alteration completely and permanently eliminates all connection between mouth and neck and the loans [Music] a tube is inserted in the opening through which the patient breathes [Music] if we were to place a plastic bag over the head of a conventional breather he would suffocate in a matter of moments this man however is a neck breather and places no reliance whatsoever on air entering from the nose and mouth in fact for him the application of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation or oxygen to the nose or mouth would only force air into the stomach not the lungs unless such aid were directly applied to the stoma this man would die in the event a laryngectomy need to assist another laryngectomy or a conventional breather two methods of resuscitation will be demonstrated first the Silvestre method pulling the arms outlet over the victim's head should allow air to go in pressing the lower chest under the diaphragm should cause air to go up repeat until there is evidence of results keep the victim's head straight this will allow the stoma to retain its shape this is most important [Music] this is the Holga nielsen method first put something under the neck of the laryngectomy between the stoma and the ground this will keep dirt particles from being inhaled or sucked into the stoma propping his nose and chin and the heel of a shoe will keep his head from slipping out of position for here again it is most important to keep his head straight so that the stoma will not change its shape press firmly allowing the weight of the upper body to assist in pressing the victims diaphragm release and pull on the arms repeat until there is evidence of results yesterday medic alert bracelet every dryer injector need where they this bracelets not only identifies a neck breather but also gives special medical information about it he might be a diabetic or allergic to antibiotics they will want to know that at the hospital a collect call anytime day or night to the phone number listed on the bracelet giving his serial number will immediately elicit any information provided in his international file [Music] [Applause] the International Association of laryngectomy is an affiliate of the American Cancer Society can provide further information about the men and women who have become neck breathers call on them they will be grateful a human life was saved this time because someone was aware of the need to check the neck [Music] many of these people are for of battle with cancer they've not come out Sun scarred but they have learned more than ever the value of life and they want very much to live it the removal of the larynx leaves the laryngectomy voiceless only
