so hello welcome everybody i'm skip alzheimer this is the 80 geeks lunchtime streaming show live from raleigh north carolina where the av geeks archive is located um we just watched a silent 16 millimeter film so mos is a designation that sometimes appears on a film can or on leader and mos stands for it's german mitt out sound uh which is um well it's not really german is it yeah that would sound yeah anyways it's basically silent mos so that was silent uh and that was raw material from a coronet film which is about force so there's some great footage there and i have uh other reels that were dealing with that as well but it got me in uh thinking about lakes and um this film which i think is a coronet film well maybe not uh is about the lady of the lake it is [Music] among the authors of romantic literature none is more famous than sir walter scott his highly idealized and imaginative writing earned for him the name the great romantic one of the most widely read of his poems is the lady of the lake an exciting story of 16th century scotland to enjoy the poem fully we should keep in mind the background of the story the scottish people and places which the author describes so vividly sir walter lived at abbotsford his beautiful home which can still be seen in the wooded hills of selkirk county scotland it is in the border country between england and scotland a little farther north is edinburgh the royal heart of scotland and north of that in the highland country is the trusses the setting of the lady of the lake at abbotsford sir walter lived for 20 years writing novels and poems about scottish characters and places his love of history of the ideals of chivalry and knighthood these are a part of his home which looks like a feudal manor house of old here in his library the master of romantic literature recreated the scottish heroes and the exciting episodes we read about sir walter sometimes called the lord of abbotsford could look up from his writing to gaze out over the historic countryside he was fond too of walking here in his garden from abbotsford he could see the beautiful eldon hills another one of his favorite hearts scott often said i can stand on the elden hill and point out 43 places famous in war and verse from this border region scott drew much of his inspiration the city of edinburgh where scott also lived was another source of historic material dominating the city is the ancient castle on castle rock edinburgh castle was a place of refuge for scotland's rulers in the early days of the wars with england wars that provided a stirring theme for literature romance and history live again at holyrood house home of scotland's royalty this part of the palace was built by james fifth the same king we meet in the lady of the lake in the poem we also read of sir roderick jew and how in holyrood a night he slew scott who lived in this house in edinburgh was familiar with the turbulent history of the royal city he was equally familiar with the trusses region in the highlands and it is here in this wild and picturesque country that most of the action of the lady of the lake is staged here we can still see every lake or lock and every mountain or bend described in the poem today the high ridge of ben leady stands as it did when the stag hunters thundered past it nearby is beautiful loch benihar where the hunters with clanging hoof and horn swept on in the chase the startled stag you remember stretching forward free and far sought the wild heath of uh here on the heath of uhamvar the noble stag was pausing now upon the mountain southern brow in reading the poem aloud as her walter himself like to do we sense the strong rhythm that gives movement to the story as we follow the course of the hunt we see next the cops would gray that waved and wept unlock a cray and mingled with the pine trees blue on the bold cliffs of benvenu near benvenu on the north is ben ann ben ann and benvenu are the two mountains that form the pass the deep wild nook that is called the trossocs and just beyond lies the lake for which the poem is named lokatran we see it just as the stag hunter fitz james saw it in all her length far winding lay with promontory creek and bay seeing the rugged beauty of the trossocs as fitz james first saw it we can understand why raptured and amazed he cried what a scene we're here if we look closer we can find details of the landscape here is the purple heather described in the poem and here the blue hair bell while anchored in the rifted rock is the blue pine fitz james first saw the lady of the lake ellen douglas as she stood in her boat near the shore the beautiful ellen you remember invited fitz james to share the hospitality of the douglas lodge on ellen's isle this is the island where ellen's father met malcolm graham and roderick dew perhaps it was in this very sylvan bar on the island that young malcolm and grim sir roderick almost came to blows over fair ellen here too on the island sir rodrick received the news that king james had laid waste the border country and was coming north quickly roderick sent the traditional signal to gather the clan this modern messenger in historic costume shows how the burning cross might have been carried the fiery cross should circle ordail glenn and valley down and more we read how every hut and hamlet rose in arms and as the men responded to the summons the fishermen forsoot the strand the mower blithe left in the half-cut swath his size the herds without a keeper strayed and the plow was in mid furrow stayed instant the time sir rodriguez said the muster place be landrick mead on the mede or meadow rodrick's clan gathered today scottish clans still gather on certain occasions not to make war but to enjoy their traditional games and dances proud of the historic names they bear these men still keep alive the romantic spirit of the clans to which they belong each man according to the poem was strongly bound to his leader owning no tie but to his clan no oath but by his chieftains hand something of this deep sense of loyalty still keeps the clans together just as the clans in the poem carried their ancient crests so today the clans are still identified by their banners the clans are also distinguished by the colors and patterns of their tartans remember sir rodrik's waving of his titans broad and malcolm graham's tartan hoes tartan patterns have remained unchanged and are still called by their famous clan names the weapons we read about in the poem are the heavy broadsword that sir roderick carried the short vineyard that fitz james used the heavy battle axe that hung with the hunting spear in the douglas lodge and the taj or shield that hung in duncan's hall the tasseled horn or bugle was used both in hunting and in war the battle in the poem took place here in the rude trussac's dread defile the martial din of roderick's warriors and king james men echoed against grey benvenu here at kawilin togo ford roderick dew and the king you remember fought hand to hand for this is cohen toggle forward and thou must keep thee with thy sword roderick's challenge ended with victory for the king here near loch venezha the highland chief roderick received his mortal wound and then the poem moves to its conclusion at sterling castle bulwark of the north gray sterling with her towers and town to this famous royal stronghold the king returned to take part in the games and tournament within the castle dungeon roderick dew a prisoner died as he listened to the account of the trusses battle and it was within sterling castle 2 that fair ellen and young malcolm were reunited here they received a blessing from the king the same fitz james they had met in the highlands from sterling's walls we can look north to the trossocs the stirring events the highland chieftains the deeds of love and war that scott retold all these have passed away but in knowing this background of the story we can still bring to life the poem we read harp of the north farewell the hills grow dark on purple peaks a deeper shade descending and now the mountain breezes scarcely bring a wandering witch note of the distant spell and now to silent all well my notebook does not say that secretary stevens says my shorthand notes do not say that secretary stevens was returning mr shine's call i have looked it up mr shine called secretary stevens on 19 october at 1 47 p.m and did not speak he left an operator's number 398 new york city with this calling number that's on here you know if this doesn't indicate positively that this was no return of a call but rather an original call quote starting down in the middle of the page mr stevens followed to the little hazy and monmouth who's perfectly all right for the flight he's referring to the flight of the 20th then did you you know that yes sir i believe that so i would rather have talked with you in person than have called you on the phone but since i didn't get you in person and i am about to leave on a quick trick trip to california listen to this i wanted to call you and tell you because i make it very clear that mr stevens was making the call yes sir well i i merely uh ask the question there's an um unreturned call as i understand the record here on the 19th and i understood mr lucas originally to say that the call had not been returned and has been two days later that a call was initiated then by mr stephen at least i would indicate that oh but you say you call on the 19th about an entirely different matter but he did not return that on the 19th city uh there was on the 19th arrangements were being made for a trip [Music] all right so that was some very shrunken film that i ran on the telecini um very very warmth like yeah so basically what happens is the succumbing to vinegar uh and so the film was like doing like this it's like so it wasn't making contact with the sprockets and so it just kind of crapped out uh and that was our good old friend senator mccarthy who uh they called uh pepsi joe at one point because of his um his he was trying to basically do after world war ii there was still a sugar ration in place and he was trying to lift it uh for his good friends at pepsi cola um and uh then he decided to uh start a witch hunt uh against communists so here you go joe mccarthy uh this next film is uh about um our good friend syphilis and this i believe was made before like on the heels well not heels but on the the toes of uh um world war ii and i actually have a collection of venereal disease films i don't know if you know that that's one of the big pushes that i hope to do a documentary about venereal disease uh this one's made by the american social hygiene association and uh it's pretty great and i don't think there's any sores in this i could be wrong but here's with these weapons century he discovered the spiroquita palidar the germ of syphilis syphilis the greatest plague of modern times the positive identification of the syphilis germ was the first great step toward the conquest of this devastating disease as a mason builds a house stone on stone so science builds knowledge on knowledge bit by bit only a year after the discovery of the syphilis germ bordea and wasserman developed and gave the world the first blood test for syphilis syphilis could be diagnosed then four years later in 1910 paul early in his 606th experiment produced salvasan now called arsphenamine this drug when injected into the body kills the syphilis germ ehrlich's brilliant success crowned the achievements of shaodin border syphilis could be cured but medical science never satisfied marches on treatment was further improved in 1922 liberty found that bismuth aids in the cure of syphilis hundreds of other scientists added to medical knowledge until today the diagnosis and treatment of syphilis are efficient procedures known to physicians everywhere [Music] in spite of the fact that a cure for syphilis has been known for 30 years syphilis today is one of the most prevalent of serious diseases a leading cause of sickness and death in america more than six million people have syphilis one in twenty there are a million new cases every year why certainly it's terrible work can be seen everywhere syphilis strikes infants kills thousands when it does not kill it may cause blindness deafness insanity or deformity in adults syphilis is a leading cause of heart disease it strikes men and women in the prime of life makes many helpless influence its victims help fill the ever expanding institutions for the insane it breaks up homes causes many divorces wars syphilis kills more than wars fires syphilis costs more than fires floods or famines why why when physicians everywhere can diagnose and treat syphilis do we permit this pale spiral germ to continue its devastation the answer is ignorance ignorance is the greatest ally of syphilis the rich are penalized by lack of knowledge as well as the poor both suffer because they have not learned the simple hopeful truth about syphilis that it can be cured and its spread can be prevented fortunately times are changing newspapers are aiding the campaign against ignorance the radio is presenting the facts to millions literature is being distributed and read speakers are instructing thousands so that they will be able to protect themselves and others from syphilis [Music] anyone who thinks he has syphilis should go at once to a physician because only a physician can diagnose syphilis early symptoms are sometimes so slight that they may pass unnoticed the disease develops insidiously years sometimes elapse before it makes itself known a knowledge of the patient's history is the first step in diagnosis then follows a thorough physical examination if sores are found as is often the case in early syphilis a dark field microscope is used to determine whether or not the germs are present an essential part of any examination for syphilis is a blood test the doctor takes a sample of the patient's blood seals it in a sterile tube and sends it to a laboratory there the delicate and complicated test is applied the results are checked and then recorded on individual cards only a physician can interpret the results of the tests when syphilis is found treatment must begin at once early treatment is the patient's great hope of recovery cases discovered in the early stages can usually be made non-infectious and completely cured even in neglected cases the disease can often be arrested and suffering relieved modern treatment usually consists of injections of some form of osphenamine and bismuth which can be taken without interfering with the patient's daily work treatments must be taken regularly and persistently injections over a period of a year or longer may be required for permanent results the patient must also follow the doctor's orders as to food proper rest and particularly his precautions for protecting the health of others for syphilis is a catching disease especially in its early stage transmitted nearly always by close body contact it spreads from man to woman from woman to man from husband to wife and often from mother to unborn child as it claims its million victims a year since any syphilis infection is always linked to one or more others doctor and patient must cooperate to bring under medical care the person who is spreading infections for treatment makes syphilis non-infectious the treatment of a single case may prevent the suffering disability and perhaps the death of no one knows how many others [Music] with the medical profession as the spearhead of the attack the fight against syphilis is well begun physicians are more alert than ever to discover and treat infections in all persons under their care free clinics hospitals and health departments provide medical care for those who can afford to pay only small fees or nothing at all health agencies contribute by helping to trace infections and by teaching syphilis victims how to prevent the spread of infection many states now require that every expectant mother be examined and her blood tested for syphilis a most important step for it is one of the miracles of medicine that modern treatment prevents the transmission of syphilis from mother to unborn child an increasing number of states require that before marriage both bride and groom have an examination including a blood test for syphilis and similar laws are being pushed in other states for government has found that millions now spent for the support of institutions for victims of syphilis can be saved industry two is beginning to realize that war against syphilis is tremendously important compensation costs costly accidents and labor turnover often chargeable to syphilis can be reduced and so many industries are encouraging infected employees to secure treatment but the work has only begun there is much to do government and citizens have a tremendous task ahead schools have a responsibility to teach youth the ways of health for 75 percent of all syphilis is contracted before the age of 30. churches can do much by instilling high ideals parents can guide protect and instruct growing children communities can provide facilities for wholesome play and communities too must enforce laws which protect youth from degrading condition yes there is much to be done but thanks to medical science thanks to research workers physicians and public health leaders all of the weapons for a successful war against syphilis are at hand syphilis can be diagnosed it can be made non-infectious it can be cured only one more thing is needed to defeat the germs of syphilis knowledge of the facts by every man and woman with widespread knowledge and with these weapons america can conquer syphilis in one generation [Music] so um yeah so my interest in venereal diseases i used to work for asha um back in the day and um also read a book uh no magic bullet which looks at the history of venereal disease in the united states um and it's kind of fascinating in the 20th century to see um how prominent venereal disease was specifically syphilis and gonorrhea and um because people were having sex they were having sex um before marriage like before the sexual revolution people were having sex and they were spreading the disease and it was um it was pretty serious uh because it was causing problems the whole reason for getting a test before you get married would be to get treated so that you don't pass it on to your baby because it can be it can cause severe birth defects in uh infants um with gonorrhea blindness um so this is kind of a fascinating look at this and world war ii definitely helped step up uh other types of drugs and then eventually penicillin was was what was used and then it became the message was more about just like find out if you have it and get the shot and then tell us who you think you got it from so we can give them a shot um this is really an example of public health that where the numbers that did drop they did drop pretty significantly over a period of time uh they kind of still come back every once in a while there's little hot spots supposedly i-95 is a corridor a red blistery corridor of the syphilis and other venereal diseases um i'm joking i mean i'm laughing but it's you know it is pretty serious um but anyways so that's public health uh the rich don't know where it's how it's spread and how to take care of it and just like the poor so public health has always been an issue as far as getting the information out uh dispelling false information about how diseases are spread uh et cetera uh it's always been an issue so um this next film is a military film it's made by the us navy and it's about keeping keeping your living and working spaces clean now i have been approached many times by law firms to to use this footage to get a dvd of this footage to show in court see if you can guess why um so just think about it and i'll have the answer at the end and put put your answer in the notes why or in the comments why do you think this film was accessed by many law firms over the years enjoy [Music] [Music] [Music] you've often heard people compare a ship to a city this is no fanciful figure of speech take most of the activities of a busy town and most of its male population pack them aboard a naval vessel and you've got a condition of pure reality whether it's work or worship eating or sleeping or being entertained or keeping clean this is life being lived by a concentrated population that very concentration sets up problems problems of sanitation ventilation lighting and safety as members of the medical department whether your ship is large or small you have the responsibility to ensure the maximum of health and comfort that the design of the ship permits this takes detailed observation in both formal and informal inspections sanitation is at the top of the list everybody likes to live in a clean home but there's more to inspection than just looking to see if things appear to be clean at a superficial glance this birthing compartment seems to be clean maybe it really is but you've got to look close to make sure this is how a locker ought to look although neatness doesn't necessarily imply cleanliness the chances are that a man who keeps his gear as tidy as this keeps everything else about him clean as well on the other hand this may be a clue to other problems matters of sanitation affect everybody aboard in every part of the ship thirsty even a fixture in constant use by many men doesn't have to look like this there's no excuse for the butt in the first place as for the rest what's obviously needed is frequent cleaning here is a well-kept head the deck is dry valves are working properly there's no trash lying about it looks fine but is it really a place that smells bad isn't clean no matter how it looks whoever cleaned up in here apparently swabbed the deck around the fixtures and just kept on swabbing and smearing hard to reach places like these demand extra effort speaking of swaps this is no way to stow them particularly when they're damp this is how the place should be cleaned with fresh water and clean swabs especially around water closets but swabs and water won't stay clean throughout a job of this kind water should be changed and swabs rinsed clean so they won't smear dirt around and just as important swabs must be cleaned after use then they should be dried outside in the fresh air the usual rule for inspecting is that you will be out looking for problems but sometimes the problem comes looking for you vigorously the man has a familiar complaint doc our compartment is too hot nobody can sleep in that hole can't you do something about it well your first thought may be that things are tough everywhere the ship was built the way it was built and nobody can squeeze any more air out of the ventilating system than it was designed to deliver undeniable but maybe the situation isn't entirely hopeless the thing to do is find out about it this is a problem for the medical and engineering departments together since comfort and health are involved with the mechanics of ventilation an engineer will go along and inspect the space with the hospital corpsman and the man who has complained of discomfort sure it's hot hot and humid the man was right there doesn't seem to be any circulation of air at all even a man lying quiet gets in a sweat what can you do one thing your skipper can request a survey by the industrial hygienist next time you're in port but before that have a look around your own inspections will often reveal conditions that you can improve this looks like a good device a filter to keep dust from dropping down into the living space but the very dust that it's meant to collect clogs the cheesecloth until it restricts the flow of air off it comes no ventilating system will work efficiently if people tamper with it it's designed and adjusted to deliver a definite amount of air to a given compartment according to the requirements of the space further the operation of the ventilating system is balanced to meet the requirements of the whole ship so you should have a look at the adjoining compartments while you're about it now here's something sailor-made ventilation nice for the man who sleeps here but not for the one he's taking fresh air from in the next bunk or even in the next door birthing space somebody will be getting the word from this engineer looks more comfortable now and your efforts will be remembered maybe it isn't always this easy but certainly there will be times when you can correct or improve a condition of discomfort certain spaces aboard ship have special ventilation problems the laundry is one of the hottest working spaces aboard one where extra fresh air has to be pumped by the ventilators yet it has a way of clogging its own exhaust lint from the dryers the stuff has to be frequently removed or it will clog the exhaust gratings so that almost no air can pass when you find such a condition during your inspection often just a word will suffice to get it corrected of course the fire rooms are the hottest places of all here it is impossible to maintain temperature at a comfortable level with relation to the temperature outside special fresh air ducts are provided to give spot relief it is essential to health that these be kept in top condition and you should be aware of the possibility of heat stroke in engine and fire rooms most below deck spaces in the naval vessel have to be artificially lighted efficiently lighting them is as much of a problem as ventilation when you hold sick call you want the best light you can get you couldn't do your job well without it if you were inspecting your own sick bay you'd insist on the proper lighting for the purposes of the space this same idea applies everywhere else aboard for recreation in off-duty hours the light should be sufficient for comfort the problem here isn't so much a lack of brightness as a condition of inconvenience you probably can't correct it but as a result of your inspection your ship can request an industrial hygiene survey many ships have had individual bunk lights installed proper lighting for the purposes of the space you'll often find special lights on various pieces of equipment within a space it's easier and safer to do a job like this with the proper light another point to notice in your inspections is the lighting in spaces adjacent to brightly lighted ones the eyes need time to accommodate themselves and a man in a hurry might not have time to wait this business of adequate lighting is very closely associated with shipboard safety you will certainly recommend brighter lights in this passage within the limits of dark and ship requirements you don't have to be making a formal inspection of safety matters to run into a condition like this maybe the old hands will tell you that slack chains are a condition of life that you get used to but when gq sounds nobody's got time to risk his neck you get the idea in your inspections for safety you will be on the lookout for anything that could be a hazard an unguarded hatchway a smear of oil that could cause a fall luckily for you someone already caught this one now so far we've been looking at each of several shipboard spaces to emphasize each of the aspects of inspection separately when you make an inspection however you will apply the practical plan of inspection for sanitation ventilation lighting and safety together in each of the spaces you visit when you inspect the birthing compartment your examination is both general and specific is the place well lighted is it well ventilated is it generally clean are the bunks arranged for head to foot sleeping to reduce the possibility of cross infection caused by men's breathing in each other's faces are the mattress covers clean and the bunk bottoms this is a place to look for bed bugs along the canvas seams and lashings now how would you classify this sanitation certainly if there's food left in there it will draw vermin but safety too in rough weather that thing could fall off and hurt somebody a thing like this should be brought to the attention of the mess deck master at arms we are purposely omitting from this film the inspection of galleys and associated spaces inspection of food storage preparation and service are covered by other pictures in the series sanitation is the big thing in showers and washrooms though of course they must be well lighted and ventilated too while you're looking to see that the equipment is clean test the faucets and see if there's a waste receptacle if not there will be soap wrappers and razor blade packages thrown on the deck and in the toilets they say a man isn't safe even in his own home because he can always slip and fall while bathing a slimy shower deck is a deadly weapon especially when the ship is rolling such a hazard should be removed immediately making a note of it for future correction would not be enough the right way to go about it is to send for the master at arms or section leader explain the danger and have it removed on the spot the barber shop should be as clean as your own sick bay and the barber himself as clean as you are when you hold sick call details are most important see that he uses a throwaway paper neck strip for each man the apron serves many customers and could transmit infection the common shaving brush is out for the same reason combs are used for more than one customer but between uses they should be kept in a sanitizing solution which is changed daily also they should be frequently cleaned with a detergent or ammonia water the powder brush is no safer than a shaving brush the barber should use a clean towel and use it for one customer only the first time we visited the machine shop we discussed lighting only but in almost any workspace you can find several aspects of your inspection responsibility on a large ship you'll find a dozen or more small private coffee messes they can present a bad sanitation problem unless they're well organized as this one is since there isn't always a sink handy for washing cups the best plan is to let each man buy his own cup and be responsible for keeping it clean this reduces the chances of contamination and infection a machine shop can also be a dangerous place how about safety precautions cautionary signs are valuable as long as they are good and legible and prominently displayed and the point of inspection for you is to see that they are obeyed another point is to see that machine operators wear prescribed protective gear in this case goggles beside the normal requirements of ventilation a space of this kind has at times a very special requirement and here the conditions of safety and ventilation become one if it weren't for the exhaust blower to carry off toxic fumes you could bet on seeing this man in sick bay before tomorrow your inspection may be formal or informal but whether you are making an inspection at a scheduled time and place or just going about the business of shipboard living you are in a sense always inspecting that is looking out for the health safety and comfort of your shipmates and yourself when you find a condition that needs correcting what you do about it is largely up to you but the keynote is judgment and tact sometimes a word or just the look is enough another time you may have the opportunity to improve the general well-being by responding to a complaint often you will make note of a condition that must be reported to other authority for correction like inadequate lighting in a certain space and sometimes you will have to request immediate action as in the shower situation where safety was involved when you have to make formal reports of conditions that you've tried again and again to correct make them informative put it into them your best recommendations for remedial action in brief make your inspections conscientiously and follow them up then you will have done your best to ensure good conditions of sanitation ventilation lighting and safety aboard your ship [Music] fun to show a film just kids going wild having fun um no message just kids going wild so that's what that was that was part of the encyclopedia britannica magic moments series a lot of fun and uh for those of you that uh answered the question why did uh various law firms show interest in the navy film that i showed asbestos is correct uh they were basically using that as evidence that the navy knew that they had um ventilation situations to where uh asbestos was present and was filtering into the living quarters of people um it took me a while to figure it out like i was like i don't
