that came from the Mogul Brothers uh Library uh via Oregon archive and there were some like I said there was some crazy stuff in there um yeah oof uh so anyhow uh I'm a little I need to have I'm gonna make some coffee after I put this next film on I seem to be a little scattered it's raining here and um so that's doesn't normally throw me off but for some reason today it has uh including like uh modern engines and energy conversion enjoy [Music] [Music] whenever an object is moved work is done if you happen to be the person doing the moving you'll probably agree that this is work today much of our work is done by machines there are machines for pushing machines for Pulling machines for lifting and machines for lowering they all move objects as you know energy is needed to operate a machine where does this machine get its energy from gasoline like most fuels gasoline contains stored chemical energy which scientists call potential energy potential energy cannot move the race car until it has been converted into mechanical energy [Music] the part of a machine that converts the potential energy of the fuel into mechanical energy is the engine but how does an engine do this the part of an automobile engine where energy conversion takes place is called the cylinder inside the cylinder is a moving part the piston when the engine is running a fine mixture of gasoline and air is drawn into the cylinder as the Piston Rises it compresses the fuel air mixture and thus increases its pressure the fuel air mixture is ignited and burns with explosive force producing heat the heat further increases the pressure of the gases in the cylinder in this way the chemical energy of the fuel is converted into heat energy the high pressure of the hot gases forces the Piston down the force of this moving piston is the mechanical energy which turns the wheels of the car many engines work on the same Principle as the automobile engine pistons although automobile engines and other piston engines are useful devices they are not perfect they cannot change all of the chemical energy of the fuel into usable mechanical energy piston engines waste most of the chemical energy but how is this energy wasted when fuel is burned some of its chemical energy is converted into light and sound energy is also wasted in friction between moving parts vibration or heat radiated from the engine itself but all of these energy losses are very minor when compared to the loss of energy in the exhaust gases since this heat energy has not been converted into mechanical energy it is wasted this is the single biggest waste of energy in a piston engine while the piston engine operates on the up and down movement of Pistons another kind of engine operates on a circular or rotary motion this jet engine is one kind of turbine engine the part of the engine made up of curved blades and a shaft is called the rotor because it rotates the front part of the rotor is called the compressor while the engine is operating the blades of the compressor draw air into the engine and compress it the high pressure air is forced into the combustion Chambers where fuel is injected and burned the chemical energy of the fuel is released in hot expanding gases the gases rush through the turbine blades of the rotor forcing it to spin at terrific speeds because the spinning of the rotor is smooth and steady less energy is wasted in vibration than in a piston engine in addition the turbine engine has fewer moving parts and so less energy is wasted through friction because the fuel is burned in a steady stream the jet engine like all turbine engines develops more heat energy and therefore more mechanical energy than a piston engine of the same weight but no engine can convert all the potential energy of the fuel to usable energy the Jet's exhaust is very hot this is heat energy that has not been converted into mechanical energy it is wasted the remaining energy spins the shaft of the rotor some of the energy which turns the rotor is used to turn the compressor the rest of the energy can be harnessed to do useful work for example the rotor can be used to turn an electrical generator helicopter blades or automobile Wheels when a propeller is attached to the rotor of a turbine engine it becomes a turbo prop engine the turboprop engine is similar to the turbojet engine except that the turbojet has no propeller in a jet the hot gases formed by the burning of the fuel expand and push in all directions with equal force the gas is pushing backward rush out through an opening at the rear of the engines but gas is pushing in the opposite direction are blocked by the engine itself this results in a strong push against the engine called thrust thrust is the force that propels the engine and the airplane forward Jets often fly best at altitudes of six to eight miles above the Earth where the air is thin so there is less drag since they perform well at such high altitudes have you ever wondered why they aren't used for space travel in a jet engine the potential energy of the fuel is converted into heat energy by burning the fuel that is combining it with oxygen from the air but about 20 miles up the air becomes so thin that there is not enough oxygen to burn the fuel how can this problem be solved the solution is easy build an engine that carries its own supply of both Fuel and oxygen such an engine is called a rocket engine although the basic principle of Rocket engines is very simple space Rockets are quite complicated to prevent explosions which would occur if the powerful fuels were burned too fast rocket engines must be designed to carefully control the rate at which the fuel Burns there are two main types of Rocket engines solid fuel and liquid fuel the liquid fuel rocket contains separate tanks of liquid Fuel and liquid oxygen or a chemical that can supply oxygen solid fuel Rockets contain a solid mixture of fuel and a chemical that will furnish oxygen in both types of Rocket engines the fuel is oxidized or burned in a combustion chamber hot gases are produced which expand and push in all directions in the chamber just as in the jet engine the hot gases rush out an opening in the rear of the rocket engine while the gas is pushing in the opposite direction thrust the rocket forward even though there are differences between the engines you have seen they all must go through the same steps to convert fuel to energy what are these steps today scientists are developing totally new kinds of engines engines that do not depend upon chemical energy at all for example why doesn't this ship have Smoke Stacks it is nuclear powered in nuclear engines fuel is not burned so there is no smoke instead a small amount of atomic fuel is converted directly into a great amount of heat energy which is used to produce mechanical energy for travel in outer space the ion engine a type of electric rocket is being developed this engine uses the force of a stream of electrically charged atoms called ions rushing out of the engine to drive a spacecraft because the ion engine uses only a small amount of electricity the power it develops is very small but in outer space where there is no air resistance such engines are able to gradually build up speeds of hundreds of thousands of kilometers per hour another kind of engine carries no fuel at all the solar engine converts the Rays of the sun to electrical energy or to heat which can then be converted to mechanical energy in the future it is possible that immense satellite solar power stations will be constructed and placed in orbit high above the Earth each satellite might spread out over 20 square miles and weigh millions of tons here in space above the shadows and clouds of Earth Acres of solar panels would capture the solar energy of sunlight 24 hours a day this energy would be beamed to receiver stations on Earth in the form of radio waves which would be converted into electrical energy for our homes and factories the universe itself will become a vast power source as future scientists and Engineers develop totally new methods of energy conversion thank you Centron for that upbeat view of what the future is going to be like and of course uh some people commented um there was a change in administration uh which kind of put a lot of that stuff on the back burner um because it's like you know what we got plenty of oil never mind we're good we're totally good um here's another Centron film yeah so we in the course of scanning stuff they come from every part of America every racial and economic group with one aim in mind to find their dream and to escape the hard times at home [Music] isn't long before the trouble at home Fades before life on the street the truth is the street is a nightmare of brutality and runaways become victims of the terror it holds telling someone they are still alive becomes very important hello Mrs Thomas this is Donna calling from Runaway hotline and what we do is try to get runaways back with their parents by transferring messages back and forth we've had a call from a boy who says he's your son Steve he's 15 and he's been away from home for two weeks and he says he has a cat named longy is that your son okay this is a message he asked for us to give to you he said tell Mom and Dad that I'm okay I love them tell Susan my girlfriend I love her don't worry and I'll keep in touch [Music] laughs I'm 15 years old and I started running away when I was 12. it was real hard for me to be at home it's kind of a feeling of Independence at first and then it starts getting to be a drag on the street you don't see anything but junkies and pimps and horse I mean they're everywhere and people always I mean you can't walk down the street in like a normal everyday person like in this neighborhood thing because you walk down the street and you know there's always a pimp or a trick or somebody that'll come by and say hey baby you know give y'all a bunch of hasses those who stay on the street are beaten raped tortured and some are killed underage having no skills all must steal or prostitute themselves to make money and they have to make money to survive I just stand on street corners bombing or Stills some muddy stuff sell it just you know roll somebody just any way you can get some money uh you know there's somebody trying to con your money out of you it's it's either you're trying to get their money they're trying to get yours sort of you know survival of the fittest because anything get money never get anything and being out fantasy and how everybody else did it and how everybody else would just do whatever they could for money I couldn't see myself doing it then I realized it wasn't all like everybody had pictured it be that you could come and go and what you can't without money or someplace to live when the hardships of the street become unbearable runaways seek shelter one of the first places they turn is the runaway hotline the hotline gets them off the streets and into a shelter and if the runaway desires gets them back in touch with their home [Music] or if they need like a place to stay or medical help or something like that we give them referral in their local area I need to take a personal event of a situation it'll help us to identify you to your mom and dad like oh your mom's maiden name or funded by a grant from the Governor's Office of the State of Texas The Runaway hotline handles thousands of calls monthly from all over the nation the hotline has two objectives one relay messages that runaways want given to parents and two get young people off the streets and into one of the 600 shelters located throughout the United States the hotline attaches no strings to the service [Music] just as The Runaways differ in age and economic status so do the parents while the life of a runaway is frantic filled with Terror and brutality the life of the parent is tedious slower paced each minute filled with anxiety and fear for their child's safety hours are spent in waiting waiting in anger and fear worried and ridden with guilt they want to rush for help but must wait helplessly you go through such a state of Horror while you're lying in the bed thinking um where is she in the middle of the night who in the world could she possibly be with I think every weird story I have ever read or in the newspaper or anything I've ever seen on television probably flies through my mind as far as her mutilated body being kicked in a ditch somewhere I I walk from one end of my house to the other end thinking I was cleaning house but I was doing nothing but wiping off the same spot on the kitchen counter that was clean and yet the dirty dishes were piling to the ceiling and I wasn't even aware of what was going on around me because my my mind and my thoughts were completely um engrossed in where my child was who she was with and why had she done this the first thing I I said to myself is why had she done this to me to us as parents but the more you the more you're able to come to your senses you might say you realize it's not what they've done to you but what they're doing to themselves Laura it has not come home does not want to come home we still have to deal every day with this fact how can we help you okay what's your name establishing a link between runaway and parent a 24-hour hotline volunteers provide the parent with comfort and support without betraying confidences yes if she is a runaway is she 15 years old she's been gone two weeks okay she's left some identification and a message for you we don't know where she is we have toll-free watch lines we don't know their location no we don't know that as your maiden name Johnson did you take a trip to Canada when Terry was eight years old okay this is her message I'm all right I love you both but I had to have time to think you think you can call us back tonight and get a reaction from the phone often runaways and parents are reunited and yet sometimes despite all efforts the reunion may be too late I miss you so I left a message for her loved and we wanted any unconditions and we didn't get what it was we're going to home and she left the practice the same message that she wanted to come home then but she didn't know so I sent a message back to her that we wanted a home and just call us let us know where she's at and we'd send her the money she came home right after her birthday was February 26th and the next time I heard from him we've sent a plane ticket and she came home and my daughter was talking to him and she was could talk then she was coherent and she knew what she was saying the whole time and she was telling her that being on drugs and how it was and how she got started and uh then I don't know sometime up in the morning she started going to deliriums and she got to the point she only knew me oh she couldn't see her mama Hug Me Mama kissed me and said don't get going mommy don't leave me and it went on like that for about 24 hours I was the only one who knew her sister came in and took care of him bathed her because her sister's a nurse and she stayed with me and the whole family was in and out but she didn't know anyone but me I think it was the second day that she went into a coma and she never came out of it [Music] you think that is one of you if one world could have done different you know it made things different but I don't know I don't know if anything I could have done any different for to help her my son is I still won't talk about her and if you mention her name anything they leave the room because they they can't accept the fact this is dead and the daughters are almost the same way it's like she's run away again because she ran away so many times that we keep looking forward to come back we're keeping phone rings you expect to hear her on the other end of the phone but she's all right you know and then she's gonna come home you're deep in your heart you know she'll never come home again She'll always be part of us with her but she'll never be back and we know that [Music] I can't accept the feeling that she's gone because when the phone rings sometime at night and the phone ring and it's like she's run away again you know to fire a place and I keep stating and come back happens to Runaways do they all return home unfortunately not all of them do of those filmed in this documentary one is still somewhere on the road one became ill and died at home one is now in a private institution and with her family receiving counseling and one has come home hopefully to stay if families are going through this it's not not to be afraid to ask for help and not be afraid to talk to other people about it because you'd be surprised at people in everyday life like at the stores and things like this that they can give you information they can give you advice and you'd be surprised at the people that have been through it and you're not alone in it and they can give you so much comfort that you can't get otherwise well once you're home it's really hard and the best thing to do is just try to just sit down with your family either one at a time or all together and just try to talk at out and don't pretend it never happened it happened and just [Music] Saturday I think it is a man I had never seen one but it looked like one [Music] oh I feel more curiosity about it than about any of the other reptiles it has frousy hair no hips and tapers like a carrot so I think it is a reptile though it may be architecture I was afraid of it at first for I thought it was going to chase me [Music] but it was only trying to get away he I waited a good while then gave it up and went home Sunday today the same thing I've got it up a tree again it is resting I suppose it looks to me like the creature is more interested in resting than anything else [Music] hmm it was trying to catch the speckled fishes that play in the pool and I had to Claud it to try to make it go up the tree again and let them alone hmm this new creature is a good deal in a way I wish it would hang out with the other animals and leave me alone [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh moderation it was the first time I'd ever heard speech except my own I did not understand the words
